New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Outfit Generation App

Ask HN: Outfit Generation App 3 by vojtech_richter | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey there, it would mean the world to me if you could leave a quick opinion on this app idea. The application would let you provide photos of your closet items, and depending on your target look/style of the outfit, it would recommend few outfit ideas based on your items. Would you be willing to pay money for this? Or do you know someone, or a group of people who would be interested in using this product? Thank you for your time, have a lovely day!

New ask Hacker News story: How to hide used ports? [cybersecurity]

How to hide used ports? [cybersecurity] 2 by ihaveone_401 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Let's say, I live in a country, where I want to play Minecraft. I also know, that my government has officially banned Minecraft, and I will get in troubles by trying to play it. I could try to install Minecraft over Tails OS, so all my traffic would be routed through Tor, but my friend has told me that I still could be caught because of the the port: Minecraft uses port 25565, and by analyzing my internet-traffic government can find the port, and thus the app used. Is that true? If so, how can I hide/change/fake a port, used by an app?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: AI hackday at work – what shall I work on?

Ask HN: AI hackday at work – what shall I work on? 2 by Tmkly | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m a software engineer (typescript/react (and react native)/lua/bash scripting skills). At work this week we’re having an “AI hackday”; we can work or anything we want, as long as it utilises AI in some way (doesn’t have to be work related). An app, proof-of-concept, etc. work will pay for chatgpt or similar API keys (for a limited time). I’m really struggling to come with a unique and fun idea. Does anyone have any ideas for a useful, fun thing to work on for 24 hours?

Ask HN: I am Software Engineer 30yo and I feel purposeless 3 by driftingaway | 1 comments on Hacker News. Lately I am not feeling well, I don’t care about anything, I feel like I do nothing. Doing simple chores has become difficult. I've been trying to get a haircut for the last 2 weeks and I am unable to go to the barber shop. I don’t feel like cleaning anything, I don’t feel like doing groceries, I’ve even started to get dirty while eating, it’s embarrassing, but I think it is because I am not paying attention to anything, I am constantly drifting away somewhere, I feel disappointed about life. Even in my worst moments I honestly question myself if it is even worth it to live, don't get me wrong I don't want to stop living and I do love my wife and family, but is more like I feel like there will not be much difference between me existing or not, and I do not know why I feel like that, that same thing would probably apply for anybody in the planet, but I cannot stop tha

New ask Hacker News story: Why Cloudflare Is a Threat to the Internet Privacy

Why Cloudflare Is a Threat to the Internet Privacy 22 by aguysomewhere | 8 comments on Hacker News. 1. Cloudflare handles approximately 20% of all the traffic on the internet. And it's growing fast. In 2017, it was 10%. [1], [2] 2. It's impossible to use Cloudflare proxy without giving up encryption of data. They are a man-in-the-middle that has access to unencrypted information of all the traffic they proxy. (Yes, even with Full-Strict/Keyless SSL) 3. Of the remaining 80% of internet traffic, 43% comes from Netflix, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple, none of which seems to be using Cloudflare, which makes Cloudflare the ultimate tool to break encryption on distributed servers. Only 37% of the internet traffic is routed outside these major tech companies. [3] 4. In July 2021, a random guy discovered a vulnerability on Cloudflare's cdnjs that allowed a complete takeover of the CDN, which is estimated to be used by 12.7% of websites. The NSA has a whole divisi

Ask HN: How to find a new job when I'm not good at networking? 5 by rrgok | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm not a genius, nor do I believe I'm the absolute best at what I do. It took me 30 years to realize that, no matter how good I am, networking often determines success. I'm in a career I don't enjoy, unable to move up or change, while others get jobs through connections. About 80% of my colleagues were hired this way, while a few of us got in by luck. Networking seems to drive career advancement. I'm naturally a loner and find it hard to feign interest in others' lives. I prefer spending time alone and struggle to genuinely connect with people. Emotional intimacy drains me, and I dread future interactions, even though I know this is normal. While I'm okay being alone, I feel that relationships are crucial for progress after a certain point. I even broke up with my partner because I can't handle constant companionship. It was so draining that I s

Ask HN: HIPAA compliant scheduling vendor? 2 by healthcare-sch | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, The healthcare startup I work at currently uses Acuity Scheduling to enable patients to schedule appointments with zoom calls with our providers. It has decent APIs, so we've been able to build a fair amount to make it work for us, e.g. syncing to our EHR (athena), custom handlers for notifications / appointment confirmations. No doubt it has gotten us pretty far (google calendar integration is nice!), but we find it lacking in several ways: - no localization support - no concept of licensing for our clinicians / more complex scheduling algorithms dependent on patient attributes - no support for multiple provider appointments (e.g. when 2 providers share an appointment, one taking the intake portion, the other the provider taking the rest of the appointment) - subpar support for class appointments, e.g. patients can't add themselves to a class after the first session has occurr

Ask HN: Advice for Imminent Pip? 2 by giantg2 | 2 comments on Hacker News. What advice do you have for a midlevel dev who might get PIP'd? The market is crap, so I can't easily move out of the company, although I am looking. I'm also looking internally, but there are no dev jobs posted at my level internally (in a tech divison of over 5k!). My manager says the department head wants to PIP me. The reason is supposedly that my throughput is too low and inconsistent (stories completed per sprint). However, a quick JIRA analysis shows I have completed roughly the same number of points as another dev at my level on my team. I have valid reasons for the inconsistency and it's common for others on the team to be inconsistent too - stories often hit major issues with the environment, confounding existing bugs, or even missing/incorrect requirements. It's not uncommon for our team bug fix/rework stories to consume 20-25% of our sprint capacity. I also have a disability. S

Open-Source, Language-Agnostic Mutation Testing Tool Using LLM Agents 2 by coderinsan | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, Check out our open-source, language-agnostic mutation testing tool using LLM agents here: https://ift.tt/KjNSEQI Mutation testing is a way to verify the effectiveness of your test cases. It involves creating small changes, or “mutants,” in the code and checking if the test cases can catch these changes. Unlike line coverage, which only tells you how much of the code has been executed, mutation testing tells you how well it’s been tested. We all know line coverage is BS. That’s where Mutahunter comes in. We leverage LLM models to inject context-aware faults into your codebase. As the first AI-based mutation testing tool, Mutahunter surpasses traditional “dumb” AST-based methods. Our AI-driven approach provides a full contextual understanding of the entire codebase, enabling it to identify and inject mutations that closely resemble real vulnerabilities. This ensur

Ask HN: How to deal with memory/cognition slowing down as an engineering leader? 10 by cogthrow | 5 comments on Hacker News. I work in engineering management. In recent years I've noticed my memory has become a bit worse, and I'm feeling generally less sharp cognitively than I once was. I don't think this is anything pathological; it's not that severe - I think it's largely due to a combination of ageing and a chronic lack of sleep during this time. Due to this, I'm finding myself in situations where my memory just fails me, in discussions where I really need to be on top of the details. And, while I've never been great at making decisions quickly, nowadays it's taking longer than ever. Given some more time, I still have the knowledge and judgement to be make good decisions. But it is affecting how I do my job, and (I believe) how people perceive me in my role. I wonder if anyone else here has experience with problems like this, and if so, whether any

Web Pages via Email – Syntax? 3 by graycat | 2 comments on Hacker News. A problem, a solution that is at least partially complete, some documentation of the solution, and a question -- is there more to the problem and more needed for a complete solution? The situation and problem: Received some email that contained a Web page. I.e., used Web browser Firefox to go to the Web site of my email provider, got their Web page that contained some email sent to me, in that Web page read the email, and in that email read a Web page (e.g., from Goldman-Sachs, but similarly from Macy's, a university, a symphony orchestra, ...). So the email (SMTP, simple mail transfer protocol) made use of MIME (multi-media internet mail extensions), and the HTML from Goldman-Sachs was in a MIME Part. The results looked fine -- Firefox, my email provider, and Goldman-Sachs all did fine. But I would like to have the Web page I received, the one from Goldman-Sachs, in a file, say, A.HTM, and that I could give

My New App for Parents to Buy and Sell Gently Used Baby and Kids' Gear 3 by jungyubl | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello there - I’m built and launched a new app called Growr - it's a marketplace for baby & kids stuff. As a parent myself, I’ve experienced firsthand how quickly our little ones outgrow their clothes, toys, and gear. It’s tough on the wallet and contributes to unnecessary waste. That’s why I created Growr, a marketplace specifically designed for buying and selling gently used baby and kids' items. My goal is to make parenting more affordable and sustainable for everyone. The way it works is simple - as a seller, you list your baby's or kid's item and wait for the buyer to contact you. As a buyer, you look for what you want and start chatting with the seller. It's all local based, which will help with community building as well. We're working on building various functionalities such as rating system, payments, and options to deliver so tha

Ask HN: Alternatives to Gumroad for "Software Licenses"? 2 by grodriguez100 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am looking for alternatives to Gumroad to sell “software licenses” / “activation codes” / “serial numbers” online. I have seen several similar platforms that focus on selling digital assets (files) but not activation codes. I could either upload a list of pregenerated codes to the platform, or have the platform generate the codes with an API to validate them. Both would be fine. I need that the platform acts as a merchant of record (to handle VAT in different countries). This basically means that the platform would be invoicing users, and I would be invoicing the platform. I would also need to be able to translate the product description to different languages (this is something that Gumroad cannot do — they force you to create different products) and also support EUR as a currency. What solutions have you worked with?

Ask HN: Why is it so hard for devices to determine WiFi network health? 3 by jc_811 | 4 comments on Hacker News. I routinely run into the below scenarios: - As I’m leaving a zone with WiFi, the signal drops to 1 WiFi bar for way too much time and tries to remain on the network even though it no longer serves. Forces me to toggle WiFi off so my phone switches to celular data - It connects to a public WiFi I’ve used before, has full WiFi signal strength, but in reality there’s no service because to actually use the network I have to login, accept terms, or something along those lines. And if I don’t do that I’m unknowingly without service because my phone can’t tell this network isn’t actually working - Similar to point 1, my phone will pick up a WiFi network that’s far away (eg my home network while I’m at my neighbor’s house) and grasp to that weak unusable 1 bar of WiFi signal forcing me to toggle WiFi off (or just forget the network if it’s one I don’t commonly use) So, I’m wonder

Why is Android Development so difficult/complex? (compared to Web and Desktop) 2 by pyeri | 0 comments on Hacker News. This is as much a philosophical question as it's a pragmatic one. I've developed all kinds of apps in my life including Visual Basic GUI programs, Windows Forms Apps with Visual Studio, web apps using PHP and Flask, console scripts in bash, python, etc. In terms of layers of complexity, none of that experience even comes close to Android Development though. To be honest, even Swing GUI in Netbeans/Eclipse wasn't that byzantine! (in fairness, I hardly ever went beyond Hello World there). To begin with, we are absolutely married to the Android Studio IDE and even though developing a project without AS is theoretically possible, the number of hooves you must jump though are probably too many for the average programmer to comprehend. I had originally been hired in 2018 as a software dev but quickly transitioned into more of a leadership role, and then finally into digital transformation. I knew the transition was a risk and I was counting on being in that role for several years, or even the rest of my career. Sadly, things didn't work out that way. Robots: The Library Book Problem 2 by daly | 0 comments on Hacker News. Back in the last century my University research involved finding a book in a library (using an 8x8 pixel camera). I called it the "Steamed Glasses Problem" as virtually everything was fuzzy. You had to trace the edge of letters to read them or trace the edge of a book to recognize that it was a book and not the shelf. These days I think that the "Library Book Problem" is a useful generalization. I have several thousand books on 19 3x6 shelves. I would like the robot to be able to perform various tasks, each one of which could be done in isolation. 0) Manipulate a book. Some are soft, some are heavy, some are fragile. Books are generally oriented so titles read in the same direction. Some books have titles in other languages. Sizes, colors, and fonts vary widely. Some information is covered by bookstore stickers. Some can stand on edge, others fall. Stacks and rows need to be stable. (Physics

Ask HN: Transitioning from web dev to more "impactful" tech 5 by hn_throwaway_99 | 1 comments on Hacker News. As I enter the latter half of my career, I'm interested in working on problems that I consider more societally impactful. The first half of my career was centered around enterprise software and e-commerce. Nothing wrong with that but at a personal level I certainly didn't get much personal fulfillment from the end goal of what I created. I'm curious if anyone with a background in general "web technologies" is either using their skills on more societally beneficial goals, or has transitioned to other skills in those areas. The kinds of things I'm talking about are anything related to decarbonization (e.g. renewable energy, storage, grid improvements, etc.), curing/treating disease and human ailments, scientific exploration, other environmental improvements, etc.

Ask HN: Multicast over UDP vs. Multicast Mellanox Infiniband 3 by scrubs | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm working on a pet project involving multi-cast. Unfortunately I don't know enough about how this scales. Consider a network of 50 Linux machines connected to 1 TOR switch. 10 processes in this network are multi-cast transmitting long lived streams of data. Other processes in the network may or may not elect to listen to these mcast packets forwarded by the switch. Is the following true? * If IPV4 UDP multi-cast is used, the switch is obliged to forward all mcast packets to all 50 machines. * If Mellanox Infinband mcast is used (and the TOR switch is infiniband compatible) the switch is not obliged to forward the mcast packets to all 50 machines. In fact, Mellanox Infiniband does mcast with subsciption. Receivers subscribe to a mcast channel (address). As such the switch only forwards mcast packets to subscribed receivers. All-in-all, the Mellanox mcast approach is net mor

Sure, everyone is regularly confronted with the rapid advances made by Copilot and the likes, but influencers on YouTube and X, as well as the very companies developing all these novel solutions, keep telling us: "there will always be a need for good (whatever that means) developers," "the rising tide lifts all the boats," or "the ones who adapt will be the ones who survive." Emails, phone numbers, attachments (yes, I did check in VM), etc. So, it has just occurred to me (I'm a little slow sometimes, getting old) that the sensitivity to one or a handful of "negative" reviews or judgements is enough to flag something potentially important as "spam". It only takes a few (how many, I don't know) "reports" for our automated systems to consider something it is not. I have some rather large PDFs that need to be transcribed, but every service I try has some minor but deal-breaking flaw. Either they don't support PDFs this large (hundreds of pages), are just really bad at English OCR, or, most commonly, don't preserve whitespace correctly. The number one problem is whitespace when it comes to multiple columns (similar to newspapers). Either not putting any spaces between words, or when there are multiple columns of text, putting rows in the wrong order. If it was just a single page, this would still be useful, since I could fix it myself. But I have over 1000 pages. I tried so many free services and trials that I just got charged for forgetting to cancel one (thanks to smallpdf.com for refunding my $12). I didn't take screenshots, but it kept complaining about a missing efi mount point or something. I'm sure a subject matter expert could tell me what happened. I tried setting aside 500gb of free space, the auto installer couldn't figure it out. But when I switched back to Mint( which is ultimately my go to distro), I just needed to manually create the partition and it just worked. I prefer Linux aside from music creation and gaming. Ask HN: Most Interactive REPL for Python? 2 by mettamage | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm relearning Python, coming from JS (and having done Python in the past). I've watched a few videos, and it is coming back to me a bit. What I wonder, is there a very visually interactive REPL? Chrome/Safari/Firefox dev tools have such an interactive REPL it's crazy. It's how I nowadays teach programming to people that are only a little bit interested in programming since they only need to download a browser to start. For example, Chrome dev tools has a debugger + pretty good text editor in the sources > snippets section. I wonder if there's anything in Python that resembles that something as interactive. In many cases, you can also create a debugger type of environment in the JS console (e.g. type console.lg('hi'), the error will come up, click on VM set the breakpoint, rerun the statement in the console and now you are on your breakpoint).

Ask HN: Using mini PCs / NUC as (small/medium) business/production servers? 2 by hedgehog0 | 5 comments on Hacker News. Dear all, Recently I saw someone mentioned that [Miniforums MS-01](https://ift.tt/Nnt13bF) is one of the more powerful mini PCs available (with possibility of extensions). Many people also seem to use mini PCs, as well as SFF computers (e.g., Optiplex), as homelab servers? I personally have a Beelink SER-5 and Debian for this purpose. So this got me thinking, would it be possible/feasible to use mini PCs and/or SFF computers as business/production servers in serious settings, such as for small/medium business and/or (SaaS) startups? Or that even in these cases, a [HPE MicroServer](https://ift.tt/ZlWziaK) may be a better choices, due to the fact that it's more like an actual server? I guess in other words, what functionalities and/or features make a server server? Thank you!

I'm a bit more willing to wait it out a bit and judge the impacts before taking that step. I can accept a dip in home value, a bit of traffic, noise, risks to ground water, etc. However, when all we see is articles about respiratory issues, skin cancer, etc it's harder to justify staying. The issue is if I search for anything related to health and pro
