Ask HN: Should I pass on a new job because they want me to sign a non-compete? 9 by trentnix | 8 comments on Hacker News. I took a few months off after the birth of my third child and am looking for a new job. I found an opportunity with a great team at an interesting company but there was a catch. After receiving an offer, I inquired if they required a non-compete and sure enough, there is a 1-year non-compete with the following conditions: following the termination of my relationship with the Company for any reason, whether with cause or without cause, at the option either of the Company or myself, with or without notice ... any business in competition with the Company's business as conducted by the Company during the course of my employment with the Company I'm not a fan of non-competes generally but considering this was written to include any business that the Company believes is a competitor (no idea what kind of scope that entails) and asserts enforcement irrespective

Ask HN: What Happened to Franchises? 2 by ohiovr | 0 comments on Hacker News. I don't see many people here post a show hn about a franchise business and plans they are offering. There are so many creative DIY technologies. I remember my dad explaining franchises to me when I was about 14 in 1990. I think it could be cool to have be either a franchisor or a franchisee. Well for me a franchisee because I rarely succeed in business. Low volume custom manufacturing of high precision parts would be interesting. Unfortunately I think there is no demand for something like this. So the little guy wanting to take advantage of all this wonderful creative technology cannot really do so to support his shop. He needs thousands of dollars of revenue per month. How could he do that and also pay and come up with genius marketing to make people ever even ring the phone, or order and pickup or ship an item? Maybe their could be parametric design tools for certain parts. Enter power, weight, effic

Ask HN: How do you deel with loneliness when WFH alone? 4 by throwAwayWFH873 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I find myself basically under a 3rd lock-down/curfew, working from home, single with friends scattered. Ask HN: How do you deal with intolerance to criticism? 4 by trwhite | 2 comments on Hacker News. I have a colleague who doesn't like receiving criticism. We're both software developers. He's a little younger and a little less experienced than me but I don't concern myself with that. My goal is to deliver value to the business and produce good work. Last year this colleague told me the feedback I gave him in PRs crossed a line and I've since gone to great lengths to think about I deliver it. I actually think I'm very respectful and considerate in how I present it. Invariably I just ask him what he thinks about other solutions. We spoke about this again last week and I reminded him that there wasn't any judgement in the feedback I was giving him; that part of my job is to criticise his work but that in no way do I consider it a reflection of his ability. Some of the time he acknowledges that his work could be improved but in most instances however he's

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Am I blowing an acquihire offer?

Ask HN: Am I blowing an acquihire offer? 4 by HNadvice | 5 comments on Hacker News. My side project that did $40K net income in 2020 received an acquihire offer in writing today. The acquirer offered a 1-year revenue share of 35% (which would act as the asset purchase for my side project) and a full-time employment offer at $160K/year + benefits. I initially asked for $185K/year which is the salary my current employer has been paying me for the past two years but then they rescinded the offer verbally saying I just wanted a job and was not being entrepreneurial. Now with the written offer, I just asked for revenue share projections and / or minimums to be specified so I know what kind of money to expect and make sure I don't make less than what I already do. Is this kind of structure typical with acquihires? By negotiating like this, am I in danger of blowing this offer (again)? HN's thoughts on this is greatly appreciated! Ask HN: How does a private, nearly-inactive Twitter account get suspended? 3 by erichocean | 2 comments on Hacker News. My Twitter account got suspended today. I've had it since 2008, and it's under my real name. (Years ago, I was offered the option to get "Verified" by Twitter.) My account has been private for years. I haven't tweeted in years, though occasionally I will like someone's tweet. I don't accept new followers and haven't in years. I also think it's unlikely any of my legacy followers would have reported me. I do NOT think I have "liked" a tweet from an account that was later suspended. (I generally only like CS-related accounts—mostly 3D graphics, machine learning, etc. and occasionally, sports. Definitely nothing political or remotely controversial.) I have NOT gotten an email from Twitter about the suspension. Any ideas? I'm at a loss to discover what may have caused it, or even what to do. They are NOT asking for my

Ask HN: Managing Focus and Energy 5 by Coolandschooled | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! Looking for some of your wise thoughts about a current dilemma of mine. I am on my way forward in life but I feel somewhat burned out and have started to lose focus while doing tasks. I feel like I have way too much going on to get really good at one or a few things. Currently, I am in the middle of grad school, I own a fairly succesful blog related to my field of studies, I have a few side-projects going on (one with other stakeholders), I dabble in trading stocks and crypto, I volunteer every now and then... And I have a girlfriend and family that also want some of my time and energy. I want to transition to a simpler life but I am having a really hard time saying "No" to the above things. Afterall they were deliberately added to my life because I enjoy them. I am already on the "no SoMe and digital minimalism"-wave so there is really not that many other things to cut out

Can you tell someone what you did today? 4 by agomez314 | 4 comments on Hacker News. In The Gutenberg Galaxy, the story goes of how, "Tzu-Gung was traveling through the regions...he saw an old man working in his vegetable garden. He had dug an irrigation ditch. The man would descend into the well, fetch up a vessel of water and pour it out into the ditch...the results appeared to be very meagre. Tzu-Gung said...Take a wooden lever, weighted at the back and light at the front. In this way you can bring up water so quickly that it just gushes out. This is called a draw-well. Then anger rose up in the old man's face and he said, 'I have heard my teacher say that whoever uses machines grows a heart like a machine, and he who carries the heart of a machine...becomes unsure in the strivings of his soul...It is not that I do not know of such things; I am ashamed to use them'". New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How do you differentiate between Real anxiety and “Fake” anxiety

Ask HN: How do you differentiate between Real anxiety and “Fake” anxiety 4 by pawannitj | 4 comments on Hacker News. So, this is how I define two type of anxieties: Real anxiety : My brain is telling me that I am not capable of dealing with the situation I am getting into. For example let's say the project I am given in my company is way above my skill set, so my brain is giving me fair warning and maybe I can take this warning and be prepared better (learn more on required skill?) "Fake" anxiety : This is my brain just being lazy and always wanting to stay in its comfort zone. For example, the project I am given is not that complex but is new, so even then my brain will have anxiety and would like to get out of it. Imposter syndrome might be another reason for this anxiety. The problem is how to classify any upcoming anxieties in these two buckets so that I can push through one and accept/backout in the other one. Do you have some mental model for this? Also do you al

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: As a software engineer, how do I best learn basic network engineering?

Ask HN: As a software engineer, how do I best learn basic network engineering? 3 by ksd482 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Is there a "System Design Primer" equivalent for network engineering for application developers? In school I never took networking class and I never had to use any of the networking utilities/commands at job beyond a simple telnet to check of host/port is reachable. I have looked into youtube videos --- but they are all too abstract and tend to go into enough depth only many videos later. I have looked into coursera courses --- same deal as youtube videos. So, to summarize the problem with all these tutorials seems to be too much time commitment -- unfortunately I don't have that much time. Perhaps a good tutorial would be something that would be a hands-on tutorial based on several scenarios. Any advice? Thanks PS: it's embarrassing to admit I have more than 10 years of experience and I still don't know the basics of network engineering.

Got this email from Fangamer about Shopify earlier today. ---- Dear Fangamer customer, Shopify, the company whose software runs the Fangamer store (and more than a million others online), has informed us that an internal security event it has been investigating since late last year included Fangamer customer data. According to Shopify, certain members of its support team used their Shopify credentials to obtain archived customer data from several hundred stores without authorization. The team members accessed data associated with order fulfillment — names, addresses, email addresses, cart contents, and phone numbers — but did not access or acquire any financial-account or payment-card information. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Are you using asynchronous video at work?

Ask HN: Are you using asynchronous video at work? 4 by albertkoz | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi, Disclaimer - I am building https://birdslate.com - an asynchronous video communication for remote teams. I've spent many years working in the videoconference space and this is my second startup in that domain. Now I am focusing all my effort on building an async video chat. I believe this is a form of communication that will sit somewhere between Zoom and Slack, yet it is not meant to replace either of them. In recent years, I've noticed that people often switch from video calls to recorded videos (e.g. for standups). I wonder if any of you is already using video messages in an asynch way, and whether you see any downfalls to it. For me the biggest pro is not being tied to a schedule, yet having the ability to hear and see the other person. I don't see many cons, but then again, I am obviously biased. I would appreciate any input on it.
