New ask Hacker News story: Initial thoughts on internal design of server-less Redshift (announced today)

Initial thoughts on internal design of server-less Redshift (announced today) 2 by MaxGanzII | 0 comments on Hacker News. Historically, RS has nodes and slices. One node made of a given number of slices (varies by node type). Data is distributed over slices, and only the slice holding a block can access that block. These days, you have RA3. RA3 has data slices and compute slices. The “data slice” I think is a group of one or more network attached SSDs, and each compute slice is an EC2 instance. Data is still distributed over slices, but I empirically see now that any slice on a node can access any block which is on that node - that’s definitely not how it used to be. So I think what happens now is SSD is on the network, which is now a notional “data slice”, but there’s only one data slice per “node” (you don’t really have nodes any more - it’s more of a legacy billing concept), and you have a cloud of EC2 instances, but they’re each tied to one of the network attached SSD groups. So

Ask HN: As an outsider, how could I publish a white paper? 7 by eezurr | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN TL;DR: I probably created the fastest "find all K simple paths" algorithm for a weighted or unweighted, directed or undirected graph. How would I, as an outsider, publish the results? If I'm right, I'd like to benefit from this discovery to open doors to more interesting work/careers. (I fear, in my 30s, I am at a huge disadvantage for not having any big co. or university to list on my resume) Background: I am outside of the tech "scene" and have no tech/academia connections (self taught, no time spent in university). That being said, I've been programming and managing operations (working as the sole dev at small co.) for 10+ years. I recently quit my job to reevaluate my career path and for fun, started working on a city builder video game. The first big problem I had to solve was "how can I efficiently simulate people/cars utilizing ALL

Ask HN: How does one do it all? 2 by akzfowl | 0 comments on Hacker News. Or to elaborate: how does one make time for it all? I understand that this might sound trite and a 'normal' existential crisis in a cliched way but I am genuinely interested in figuring out how people go about deciding what to do with their time? Is it all about one's job or family? How does one balance the pleasures and stimulation of good art in the way of books, movies, tv, music, games, etc alongside more rigorous dives into subjects that might interest one (and potentially not be related much or altogether to one's profession fortunately/unfortunately) such as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, literary theory, etc as well as producing one's own 'art' whatever that might be? Add to this concerns such as volunteering, a social life, taking care of one's physical and mental well being, fulfilling obligations to those around us, paying at least some attention to world event

Ask HN: Integrate Software Solution with Competitor's? 12 by temp088773 | 10 comments on Hacker News. I'm involved in a merger between two competing organisations. We're in the same market segment, but our software solutions differentiate themselves slightly differently. The stakeholders are obviously interested in seeing an integrated software solution that provides the strengths of the two existing solutions in one service. Obviously, there are technical challenges with this: the two existing solutions use extremely different tech stacks, where neither of which is appropriate for "plugging in" the other one. The technical people involved also want to take the opportunity to fix some long-standing scalability problems when it seems like they have to restructure the top-level architecture anyway. But I'm more concerned with organisational problems. I feel like most of these integrations easily turn out wrong or inferior to either original service. Do you ha

New ask Hacker News story: I Am Boycotting YouTube's Like Button

I Am Boycotting YouTube's Like Button 3 by AHappyCamper | 4 comments on Hacker News. Google recently castrated the Dislike Button, and now you can press it, but it essentially does nothing. Because no-one can see any effect, no-one will really use it, and eventually, Google will remove it altogether. Once again, Google is following in Facebook's guidebook on how to implement 1984. By removing even this meagre ability to dissent, you take away people's ability to think about dissenting (1984). This is morally wrong, and it should offend the senses of any true engineer. Engineers (and other critical thinkers) make observations on the world based on the data they perceive. If the data is corrupted, skewed, or biased, then our observations are equally so. By removing a critical piece of data - people's dislike of a video, Google has corrupted the observations of their viewers, and in doing so, has made the world less honest. E.g. imagine you see a video on remedies for a

Accepted and ghosted: interviewing for a leadership position at Stripe 8 by danrocks | 1 comments on Hacker News. Recently I interviewed with Stripe for an engineering MoM (Manager of Managers) for one of their teams. I interview regularly, so I am used to many types of processes, feedback mechanisms, and so on. I won't go into details about the questions because there's nothing special about them, but I wanted to share some details of my experience for people thinking of interviewing there. 1) About 35-40% of the interviewers started their questioning by saying "I will only need 20 minutes for this", while emphasizing it is an important leadership position that they are hiring for. So 20 minutes is all needed to identify "important, critical leaders"? What a strange thing to say - also a GREAT way to make candidates feel important and wanted! 2) There is significant shuffling of interviewers and schedules. One almost has to be on-call to be able to react

Ask HN: What code should be included in humanity's Foundation? 2 by respectthepeace | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've been watching the Foundation recently and got me thinking. What code or project should make it in humanity's Foundation? If you're not familiar here is a short summary of what the Foundation is: Foundation is set in the future, when the world is barely remembered, and humans have colonized the galaxy. The book introduces Hari Seldon, a brilliant visionary and psychohistorian whose job is to use mathematics and probability to predict the future. Seldon does not have the ability to prevent the decline of humanity that he predicts. Instead, he gathers together the galaxy’s top scientists and scholars on a bleak outer planet and sets out to preserve the accumulated knowledge of humankind, and begin a new civilization based on art, science, and technology. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation and designs it to withstand a dark age of ignorance, barbarism,

Ask HN: How do you keep an inventory of cloud infrastucture 2 by buzzdenver | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have inherited about a dozen AWS accounts to administer, and want to get a lay of the land of what is running on them. Basically looking for a tool where you can set up rules that give a one sentence description of each resource, and is also good at alerting once something new runs. From what I've seen, a significant percentage of EC2 instances are servers that can probably be terminated because their purpose was to run some random tests 2 years ago. I understand that ideally everything would probably be part of a CloudFormation template, but that is not a easy change to do once you already have things running AFAIK.

Ask HN: Have you noticed difficulty tapping links on HN on iOS lately? 4 by bluehex | 1 comments on Hacker News. In the past couple of months I have noticed much more difficulty having my taps on links in Chrome iOS register. I'll tap the same link multiple times with no response whatsoever. When this happens scrolling the page a bit and retrying does seem to help. I would estimate that about a third of my initial taps fail to register. This is on the main article links as well as the harder to hit tiny links for comment, upvote, etc. I have no idea if this is an issue with recent updates to iOS, Chrome or this site. It has been quite frustrating. Has anyone else been experiencing this?
