I'm interested in providing the full text search capability for product 22120 which has a web archive capability. I've investigated a few such as those based on solr but my concern is that they do not handle multiple human languages with minimal configuration. Ideally something that has the stemming and tokenization for multiple languages including East Asian languages such as Chinese Japanese Korean and ideally South Asian languages like Hindi and Urdu as well. Unfortunately a great many search engines out there seem to have a stemming and tokenization available for romance languages such as Latin derived or Germanic languages. People from everywhere like to archive web content that they browse and the content is in multiple human languages so to provide a good full text search I need something that can handle multiple human languages. New ask Hacker News story: Blockchain vs. Becoming a Better Person

Blockchain vs. Becoming a Better Person 2 by ruckadub | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've been coding and designing since 1997 and I've followed every internet iteration for 3 decades. I'm the founder of a company that is in position to change a culture based industry, and throughout my decade plus of building this platform, I have determined that building opinionated software with "old tech" operated by highly ethically individuals or gatekeepers, is the middle ground to an equitable future for the Internet. We're all exhausted with big tech's monopolized hold of the Internet, similar to how we're also tired of corporations on wall street, or over hearing about people killed by guns. As much as decentralizing big tech and replacing corporation with DeFi and confiscating all guns might seem like a great idea to some, the solution to all of this is simply becoming a better person. The blockchain not only suffers from insurmountable scaling issues, but

Ask HN: How do you tackle your own negativity? 12 by c7DJTLrn | 5 comments on Hacker News. I've noticed that the majority of my own comments here on HN have a negative spin on them and a lot of my blog posts unfortunately are very ranty. I guess to others this can make me look obnoxious. At the same time, I struggle to suppress my own negativity and feel like I need to get it out. Does anybody else feel this way? How do (or don't) you tackle it?

Ask HN: How do you develop internal tools for your organization? 2 by siscia | 3 comments on Hacker News. We are considering creating few internal tools to speed up the work of a few departments in our organization, but before starting development heads on, I would love to gather some wisdom from HN. First, what tools are you developing? How do you handle user authentication? Do you develop one single big application for everything in your organization, or few distinct applications, each with its own specific goal? Any specific thing to watch out for? Thanks!

Ask HN: Advice for generating and reading from a picture (similar to a qr code) 2 by 07121941 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm trying to design something similar to a qr code from scratch. I've got some ideas on how I can anchor and fill in binary data into the graphic design but I'm a bit unsure as to how I should approach the reading/decoding part (with a camera). Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this. QR codes have been around for a while. I like the way facebook messanger or snapcodes approach the task of human-friendly and machine readable designs, but I'd like to experiment with something new. It doesn't need to encode too much information anyway. I've been reading into AR with unity. I don't mind learning some c# but I'd ideally want to write a solution in python or javascript. Thanks again

Ask HN: Where are secular source of crypto space knowledge? 2 by Existenceblinks | 2 comments on Hacker News. As history record shows that a bunch of religions have been survived for thousand years, a lot of church and temple, along with modern technology and government of secular and non-secular states. So, I am adjusting my attitude to live with cryptocurrency stuff because I think it is not going anywhere and could still exist for my lifespan. Cryptocurrency/blockchain knowledge like religions, there are good concept applicable and useful in life, there are also tons of bullshit, scam, even violence. I would like to collect sources of knowledge that is not related to any cult non-sense. Knowledge in crypto/blockchain stuff I would like to know, for example, what's top 5 coins, overall promising regarding transaction rate, fee, market cap, suitable for application (e.g. dapp), technical and philosophical limitation. I have pretty good exploring skills, read a lot of data, but

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: The Expected Style for Tech Résumés

Ask HN: The Expected Style for Tech Résumés 4 by xook | 1 comments on Hacker News. The recent Reddit thread posted here about buzzword-filled resumes getting more results got me wondering: What does HN consider a decent résumé when it comes to font choice and graphics? There are many different styles, and presumably, some are better than others for different career paths. However, I wonder what the technology- and engineering-focused groups think is a "stand-out" résumé. For example: While at college, we were informed that a resume should be–aside from consistent–bare bones without any unexpected fonts (only Times New Roman or a basic Sans), styles, or coloration. It should be black text on a white background, no pictures, no styling outside of headings, and so forth. On one hand, it wouldn't be distracting, but would it not be wise to stand out in some way than to "blend in," as it were?

Ask HN: Another job board? Need feedback on the idea 3 by techsin101 | 4 comments on Hacker News. So It's not ready yet, but I'm creating a new job board for developers. I'm looking to get feedback on idea itself.... So my hypothesis is that as a dev, I'd love to do some gigs on the side. But I'm not really in the mood to search for them, apply to 1000s of them and do all back and forth. I literally want small jobs, that I can knock out in a day or two, and get paid $100-$1k. Another extension to this idea I've thought about is, to have an expert dev on call. Got stuck in your day to day work? Call in expert. The expert does screen share, fixes the problem hopefully. But it could be like a service that companies could subscribe for monthly N hours. (SQL expert, Wordpress, React, etc) Which one do you think has more potential?

Ask HN: HTTP request headers to facilitate better UX on web sites? 2 by mactavish88 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Are there any, or can we maybe come up with (i.e. suggestions please if it seems like a good idea), HTTP headers that browsers can send to sites that automatically instruct them in terms of: 1. The kinds of cookies I'm willing to accept (e.g. strictly necessary). For example, `X-Prefer-Cookies: strictly-necessary` or `X-Prefer-Cookies: all`. 2. The fact that I don't, and probably never will, care about your newsletter. (If your content really interests me, I'll find a way through your UI to subscribe.) For example: `X-Offer-Newsletter: no`, or `X-Offer-Newsletter: yes`. If you wanted to facilitate more general UX preference indications from the client side, you could potentially come up with a scheme like `X-UX-Preferences: strictly-necessary-cookies; no-newsletters`. This way I can set these preferences once in my browser and be done with your annoying cookie

How can an English teacher transition into web-development? 3 by aaron5 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hello, I'm Aaron. I hold a BS in ChemE, but my day-job is teaching English in China - I think I do a good job. Also I write fiction at my website. For several years, I've made little projects on the web, mostly in PHP and JavaScript, for example: a game where people "invest" in subreddits like stocks [1], a reddit-like-commenting system [2], my own website [3], etc. How could I transition to a remote web-developer job most effectively? Coding boot-camp? Crank through job-boards and applications? Go through an online MS in CS? My coding is not strong, but I can get stuff to work in PHP and JavaScript, and I can use web APIs fairly well. I'm lacking in skill and knowledge, but I hope to remedy that. So, if you have a suggestion for how I might most effectively improve and hopefully even be remunerated, I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts. Thank you. [1] paar

Ask HN: Advice dealing with Insurance denying Oncologist's recommendations? 4 by glitcher | 1 comments on Hacker News. My apologies for this not being directly tech related, but I know there are many people here on HN with domain expertise in a broad array of industries. A family member is experiencing new symptoms that were the precursor to discovering their cancer originally. Unfortunately at diagnosis, they were already stage 4. The oncologist ordered a specific scan, the insurance company denied it, and then required a "peer to peer" meeting with the doctor. They forced the doctor's hand to accept a different type of scan, which at an earlier point of treatment had returned a false negative for us. And the process is also causing, and has caused in the past, delays to treatment in an extremely time sensitive situation. What can I possibly do about this peer to peer theater? There is absolutely no way the insurance companies' "peer" knows the lates

Ask HN: Is VR/AR just a fad? 4 by nassimsoftware | 3 comments on Hacker News. Facebook has recently changed their name to Meta and it seems that they're going all in on VR/AR. While AR/VR could offer some really nice things like an unlimited amount of virtual monitors or adding information to your surroundings I just can't convince myself that it's going to be the future and replace let's say our phones. The main reason is I find it hard to believe that people who do not need to wear glasses will want to wear them. As someone who started wearing glasses young I remember when I first had to wear them and how annoying it felt. (Despite my glasses being way lighter than any vr headset currently on the market) Also VR feels like a compromise on AR and AR feels like a compromise on actually having real Holograms. What do you think of all of this? Will AR/VR become ubiquitous?

Ask HN: What tools and workflow do you use to understand new libraries 3 by whinvik | 1 comments on Hacker News. During my PhD I decided to use a C++ library to build my simulation app. One of the reasons I decided to use that particular library was that it was small and that it compiled quickly! That was very useful because my workflow in understanding the code was go through examples, change a line here, put a print statement there, compile and run. It was fine back then, because I had a lot more time to concentrate on a single task, but it did take quite some time. So I basically used git, vim and make. Now, I am doing something similar but I don't really have the same amount of time. The 2 things I have added to my usual process is to use a debugger (lldb) and document all my findings using Dropbox Paper. I feel that this is definitely much better than before but I am sure that this could be made much more efficient. So the question is what types of tools/workflows are more
