Ask HN: How can I learn macroeconomics properly? 2 by techsin101 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Last 3 years has shown that to be a good investor you need to know macroeconomics, specially in context of USA which bring stuff interest rate, QE, bonds pricing, commodity prices, and many similar things which are interconnected. I have lot of general knowledge but I want to be at an expert level of knowledge in predicting/understanding what feds, markets, rates are gonna do and why.

Ask HN: It's 2022. Where should I direct the youths to learn about programming? 2 by slyrus | 4 comments on Hacker News. So... Child #2 (18 yo) is interested in learning programming. Good "with computers" and proficient in level-appropriate math but didn't grow up as a hacker like his old man (I'll refrain from making him learn turtle graphics and BASIC). Where should I point the kid to learn the basics? I'm afraid that if I show him how to download (or, better yet, build) emacs, how to build SBCL, install SLIME, etc... and hand the kid copies of SICL and PCL someone will call child protective services on me. I imagine there was a time when the answer would have been java/awt, but those days seem long gone. Maybe there was a let's do it all in javascript phase, but that doesn't seem to be the answer today. So... modern starter pack? VS Code and Python? Tell him to learn Pandas/SciPy/NumPy? Are there any highly recommended online courses for learning

Ask HN: Bank with Yubikey support? 17 by jez | 6 comments on Hacker News. Yesterday I got an SMS 2FA text from my bank for a login attempt that I did not trigger. I changed my password, alerted my bank, and have been checking my account balance every few minutes it seems, but luckily everything seems fine. The experience got me thinking, because the SMS 2FA was seemingly the last defense saving my account from a breach. My bank doesn't offer a stronger form of 2FA—neither TOTP nor any form of U2F. Meanwhile, I really love Yubikeys; I have one plugged into every laptop I own (work and personal). I use Touch ID or Face ID on sites I access frequently from mobile. It seems that the one place where U2F would be really impactful is online banking, but I've struggled figuring out which banks support strong 2FA without first creating an account with the bank. Does your bank offer U2F, FIDO2, WebAuthn or any other form of hardware security token mechanism for logins? Have you had ot

Ask HN: On your CV do you use a different title from the one your employer uses? 2 by jstx1 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Why or why not? I've heard about people changing their own title to be more descriptive but it always felt dishonest to me. Especially when the title reflects some kind of progression (e.g. a data analyst changing their titles to data scientist because it will help them land a better job in the future). My personal policy has been to always use the exact title the company uses, and then list responsibilities in the bullet points which hopefully explains any potential discrepancy between title and responsibilities. Thoughts?

Ask HN: What would you use for a Python REST API in 2022? 2 by oblio | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've heard a lot of good things about django-rest-framework. However: 1. I've used SQLAlchemy in the past and I liked it, and I'm not sure how well it works with Django or if the Django ORM is as powerful. Though at the end of the day I just want a simple mapper and SQL query builder, not necessarily the super high level DSL. 2. How useful is the rest of Django when only the REST API parts are needed? Is it easy to disable the unneeded parts? Is it easy to completely remove them from the distribution (primarily for security concerns) What would you recommend for an average Python dev team? Some of the requirements: 1. authentication/authorization with support for IdPs. 2. paging. 3. built-in security features preventing various injections and web attacks. I know about Flask but it seems like a more barebones solution that has a longer ramp-up time, in order to find the right

Ask HN: Should computer science degrees be separated from software engineering? 7 by khaled_ismaeel | 4 comments on Hacker News. There are schools/colleges that offer degrees in crafts (for example, car repair) which are clearly separated from academic degrees in the same field (mechanics engineering, in this case). This is not the case in software engineering: you have to graduate with an academic degree in order to work as a software engineer. Do you think it is a good idea to create separate degree programs for teaching the "craft" of software engineering with a reduced dose of academia?

Ask HN: How should the cost of maintaining new software features be forecast? 4 by cwkoss | 0 comments on Hacker News. I PM for a software engineering team. Estimating the cost of implementing a new feature is a fairly squishy process, but our team has gotten reasonably good about it. i.e. How many engineer weeks will it take to go from specification to released to customers? However, I think it's an even-harder problem to try to estimate what the ongoing maintenance costs of supporting that new feature will be. - There will inevitably be some amount of bugs and/or UX issues that need to be resolved soonish after release. - Adding a new feature increases the cost of making future changes to the overall system (ex. changing a db object that is queried by 4 different endpoints will be harder than one that is only queried by 3 endpoints, also dependency management with microservices) - Having more code doing more things means that engineer spin-up and switching costs increase. Ask HN: Is it still possible to live without a bank account? 8 by jacquesm | 6 comments on Hacker News. In the 60's and 70's wage earners were lured to deposit their wages in bank accounts because they were 'free' and made payments more convenient. It also reduced the chances of theft from the payroll and in general seemed like a great idea. Fastforward 60 years: it seems to me as though it has gotten to the point that operating without a bank account is neigh-on impossible, especially for businesses. Which has - predictably - led to one rate increase after another, especially with interest rates near zero banks need other sources of income or they won't be able to make their 'quarterly earnings targets', which are apparently somehow set in stone and shall be satisfied come what may. So, I'm wondering: is it still possible as a private individual to operate without a bank account? What about doing so as a business? Is anybody here doing this?

New ask Hacker News story: Democracy at Work Is Bad

Democracy at Work Is Bad 2 by bluefone | 0 comments on Hacker News. Managers are outsourcing their work to teams, in the name of democracy. They ask the team to come up with goals and direction for the work, which was actually the job of the manager. Effectively this results in someone from the team making decisions on behalf of the manager though he is not a competent authority to do so, leading to poor decisions. Managers believe that this approach has benefits of democracy, empowers the team and makes them more committed to the work etc. However, a business org with roles is different from the political voters without roles. Organization roles have an accountability for the decisions made and they are expected to be experts in their domain. A voter in a democracy is not expected to be accountable for his decisions (there are no wrong votes) nor is expected to be expert in choosing a leader. A democracy is not meant for making decisions at work in an organizational context.

Ask HN: Why is Hacker News so much more successful than Slashdot? 5 by tentacleuno | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hacker News has so many people on it everyday, which makes me wonder why Slashdot fails in comparison. I also hear that the community at Slashdot is less than pleasant, but I'm not sure as to the validity of those claims. Why is Hacker News so successful while Slashdot has become a relic of internet history?

New ask Hacker News story: I have no idea what to do with my life

I have no idea what to do with my life 9 by alirsgp | 14 comments on Hacker News. Some background: I'm 25, finished my undergrad 2 years ago. I went to work for a FANG straight out of college, and also was working on some social networking apps on the side that I started in college. At some point my apps covered my living expenses and I decided to quit my job because I felt like it was sucking away my youth. I make enough money every month to pay my bills, and I have a decent amount of savings. I wake up everyday and want to work on something fulfilling, but don't know where to start. I feel like I have no more purpose in life and am not sure how to spend my time. I know this is a ridiculous first world problem, but it bothers me a lot. I tried studying math, buying drones, microscopes, and lots of other side hobbies but I need something to wake up to in the morning that keeps me hungry. I feel like I'm dying slowly and am not sure what to do.

New ask Hacker News story: Heroku: Compromised OAuth Tokens for GitHub

Heroku: Compromised OAuth Tokens for GitHub 6 by kdazzle | 0 comments on Hacker News. Just got an email and link to this update from status.heroku.com. Sounds pretty dodgy. In effect, it means I'm unable to link up a new GitHub repo to Heroku and might not be able to do any updates either. Not to mention the possible security vulnerability (luckily I only use Heroku for side projects). Edit: Here is the page specifically for this security incident - https://ift.tt/0EKUgIl ------------ To mitigate impact from potentially compromised OAuth tokens, we will revoke over the next several hours all existing tokens from the Heroku GitHub integration. We are also preventing new OAuth tokens from being created until further notice. Your GitHub repositories will not be affected in any way by this action. Currently running Heroku applications will not be affected, but this will prevent you from deploying your apps from GitHub through the dashboard or via automation. Some other actions in th

Ask HN: What should I bring up during salary negotiation as a junior developer? 14 by _lgj5 | 22 comments on Hacker News. So i am a junior software developer in a large consultant company and have my first salary negotitations soon and need some help. I was told all juniors would increase the same in a sort of collective way since some did not get the same chances when it came to projects and performance, however my boss said there was a small change they would consider giving a larger raise based on performance. I have been lucky and got a very good project, as in I could show my strengths and it's a high value customer. During the project i took a lot of initiative and responsibility, we were 3 developers working on it (2 seniors and me) and luckily one of them is my boss. The project is now being used by the customer and I am the only one maintaining the project and feeling I have taken even more responsibility than was expected. The project was fairly large consisting of 2 f

Ask HN: What methods do you use to focus and stay relaxed? 12 by codemonkeysh | 15 comments on Hacker News. I'm fairly certain that I have ADD. I partly feel like it started to get worse over time when utilizing certain platforms designed for to capture peoples attention with short content. I have since stopped using things like Twitter (for various reasons) and any platform that encourages short form content. What methods are you using outside of avoiding social media? Thank you for ... oh what's that over there?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Career paths when you've been disillusioned by the software dev process?

Ask HN: Career paths when you've been disillusioned by the software dev process? 5 by Trasmatta | 8 comments on Hacker News. I'm 10 years into my career, and I'm very tired of team based software development. I still enjoy programming but I've come to dread almost everything surrounding it. My work / life balance is decent, I work for a pretty good company on a cool product, and my co-workers are good people. I have suffered from mild to moderate depression most of my life, but I'm doing my best to take care of the basics there, and I'm seeing a therapist. I'm beginning to see some of the classic signs of burnout, but I don't think this is strictly a burnout question. I work well on teams, my teammates like me, but I've always preferred solo work. I think this is a stable personality trait, as I remember feeling like this as early as kindergarten. Other factors include the already incredibly complex social problems that come from developing softwa
