New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Share your favorite examples of shell script abuse

Ask HN: Share your favorite examples of shell script abuse 2 by ofalkaed | 1 comments on Hacker News. I have a real soft spot for shell scripts with no sense of reality, exercises in a beginners enthusiasm. Like many, shell scripting was my introduction into programming and after learning bash and making those few simple scripts I learned it for I wanted to use it for everything to exploit my new knowledge. All these years later seeing the overly ambitious shell script never fails to bring back the excitement of those early successes and return a sense of scope to my own projects when bogged down in the details with nothing yet to show for it all. So share your favorite abuses or just any that come to mind. I just came across bed, the bash editor [0], I was really expecting a complete nightmare and a massive script that barely functioned but was pleasantly surprised by how short and clean it is. Despite being essentially useless (beyond as an exercise) you could use it as an editor,

Brex Now Charging Foreign Transaction Fees 2 by kennethologist | 0 comments on Hacker News. A few of my clients are Brex customers and having a meeting with one this morning revealed that Brex is now charging up to 3% on foreign charges. Haven't seen anything official from the company. So just a heads up for any Brex customers who do business in foreign (non-US) countries know that you'll get charge 3% going forward.

New ask Hacker News story: How to get started learning modern AI?

How to get started learning modern AI? 3 by gofaifan | 1 comments on Hacker News. Neural networks! Bah! If I wanted a black box design that I don't understand, I would make one! I want rules and symbolic processing that offers repeatable results and expected outcomes! ...and maybe there's still a place for that. But for someone who has been possibly foolish and ignoring neural network-oriented AI, where's the best place to start learning? Go back to the basics of recurrent neural networks, deep learning texts, and so forth? Or is there a shortcut into the hip and popular transformer-based technology at this point?

Nationalistic hats-off if possible, where are the best places to domicile a new startup in the current climate?

Ask HN: What should a stuck dev do? 2 by throwaway0129u4 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I am struggling with finding work and having thoughts about whether or not I should keep going or start thinking about switching careers. Any advice/perspective is appreciated. I am a 40+ year old self-taught software developer. I've been doing front-end/full stack development for most of my 10+ year career. I was also struggling heavily with undiagnosed ADHD and the emotional dysregulation that comes with it for most of my life. I finally discovered it 3+ years ago after around 5 years in therapy and have put in an incredible amount of work since then to learn how to manage it all effectively. Through this process, I've also come to find a real joy in my work. Now I just need a good job to get my life back on track. I have been interviewing since December or so and have realized that I do not approach this work in my head the same as engineers that have gone through typical school a

Ask HN: How do you know that it's time to shutdown your startup? 2 by switchstance | 2 comments on Hacker News. I started Bestlist.com around two years ago. It is a search and discovery app that allows users to find the best of anything. The idea came about after I had grown tired of the current state of search, where a query often resulted in SEO-optimized blog posts instead of the desired information. In a nutshell, Bestlist works by taking the user’s query, scraping the internet for reputable articles and social media posts relating to the query and extracting the mentioned “listings.” To form our ranking, we take many factors into account. We look at occurrences, the listing’s ratings on various sites, sentiment regarding the listing, and a few other things. Our results are not perfect, but we’re improving them on a daily basis. We launched on Producthunt with lackluster results. After talking with users and getting feedback, the main issue I see is that people all have thei

Toasting to following your Dreams – My Girlfriend's UX/UI design debut 3 by kamy22 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm thrilled to share with you all a personal milestone in my life that I feel compelled to celebrate. My girlfriend, Julia, has been pursuing her dream of becoming a UX/UI designer for almost a year now while working in logistics, and today she has finally published her first project! I can't express how proud I am of her for putting in the hard work to make her dream a reality. It's not easy to balance work and study (you know, sleepless nights to chase a dream), but she has done it with great determination. Now that Julia has completed her first project, she's excited to take the next step in her journey and is actively searching for job opportunities in UX/UI design. Ask HN: Should countries try to increase birth rate in the era of automation? 2 by sidaxon | 1 comments on Hacker News. Demographic winter is a relevant topic discussed today. Countries are worried about things like workforce shortage or who's gonna pay the retirement of old people -- that's why some countries are pushing to reform retirement, making old people work more years. But, it also seems obvious to me that we are seeing a new industrial revolution that'll wipe a lot of jobs, so less human work will be necessary. So, why create more people, if more people will be not that necessary in the future?

Tell HN: Airbnb can charge you anything and there is nothing you can do about it 5 by tomas789 | 2 comments on Hacker News. As a part time digital nomad, I use AirBnB quite oftern. Fortunately I took some pictures before departure. I submited those to AirBnB as part of the mediation process they have. So far so good. And the result? A single person reviewed the case and concluded that I should pay for everything. I asked them to review it again as they probably missed that picture. The response was that I agree in T&C that their decision is final and they will not be reviewing again. I asked to escalate the issue but the answer (from the same person who reviewed it) was the same. I'm a software dev and don't have concerns with my technical abilities per se but am always second guessing how I behave or present my personality at work. I'm always professional and that's not explicitly a concern but am rather focused about "showing too much personality". Is there a resource that explicitly explains at a technical level the thought process behind a full implementation of a model like these? For example, why they chose to add an X-type layer here, or what layers they may have tweaked and why to improve 3.5 to 4's quality? I understand OpenAI is closed source. But I'm sure there isn't some secret sauce that only employees there know about that makes these models happen, so where does one learn this?

New ask Hacker News story: I need your help. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around ChatGPT

I need your help. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around ChatGPT 5 by complianceowl | 6 comments on Hacker News. Background: I work in Compliance and have for 8-years. A while back, I saw that there was a need, in Compliance, for people who know data analytics and who can build out systems that prevent and detect corporate wrongdoing. I decided to pursue a bachelors in Data Analytics for this reason. I have about a year and a half-ish left. But my mind is having a hard time reconciling my pursuit of a data analytics bachelor's degree with the capabilities of ChatGPT. I keep reading real, legitimate stories of how ChatGPT was able to all-together replace programmers for projects like developing micro services, websites, etc. I understand that programmers still need to validate the code, and I'm not saying I even understand to what degree programmers are being replaced, but I can't help but feel like my pursuit of a formal bachelor's degree or even continui

Can I have a similar ToS for my website so that I don't allow OpenAI to train on my website data for the next versions of GPT?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Which ideological software factions do you know of, and do you like any?

Ask HN: Which ideological software factions do you know of, and do you like any? 3 by unix_hacker | 4 comments on Hacker News. What I specifically mean is a programming community with values that transcend the projects that they maintain. In some cases, these values precede the projects themselves, and the projects are merely a tool for advancing the values. I use "faction" instead of a "community" because there is an ideological bent to them. It's not merely a community that manages a couple of helpful open source projects. Here are the ones that I know of: 1. GNU: it advocates for an OS that is libre, and can be studied and modified and shared by anyone. It has idiosyncratic attributes, like the use of Lisp as an extension language. 2. OpenBSD: unlike the FreeBSD community which is largely about FreeBSD, OpenBSD has several different projects that share a core ethos of security and correctness. Some of these projects (like Game of Trees) aren't even off

Advice on Interviewing for US Digital Service? 3 by throwaway_45321 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm preparing for an interview with the US Digital Service for a Software Engineer role in about a month. I have concerns preparing for a technical interview. Tech interviews in the private sector can be pretty brutal and I would like some time to prepare. Has anyone been through the process or is working there now? Any advice or recommendations on how to best prepare?

Divide your cash across many accounts to keep it FDIC insured 3 by robomartin | 3 comments on Hacker News. This is a thing. Here's a service (no affiliation): https://ift.tt/rjhNmT9 Scroll down to where it says "Keep your cash FDIC insured". They will spread your funds across accounts and banks in order to stay within FDIC insured limits. You see a single virtual account. They handle the sausage making. Brilliant.

Ask HN: How do you think LLMs will affect society medium/long term? 35 by hn_throwaway_99 | 36 comments on Hacker News. I know obviously there is a ton of discussion about GPT-4 in the main announcement post, and while I'm blown away by a lot of these capabilities, I honestly don't understand how our capitalist system will survive this, long term. I'm not a Luddite, but it's pretty easy for me to see how this will get rid of the need for tons of jobs. People always love to say "technology replacing people has been happening since the beginning of time", but the change here (at least to me) is that the rate by which AI can fill jobs will (or has?) hit a tipping point where it will be faster than new jobs will pop up. How do other people feel about this? I've discounted tons of hype cycles in the past (crypto/Blockchain, Metaverse, etc.), even in cases where I was wrong (e.g. the importance of mobile), but this feels at least as consequential as the Inter

Ask HN: Has GitHub Search always been broken? 2 by gtirloni | 1 comments on Hacker News. Very often, I search something and there are zero results. But when I click on different sections (code, repos, etc), some results start to show up. I think it has been like this forever and I can't remember when it worked properly. Maybe my memory is failing. With GitHub and Microsoft investing so much in OpenAI, what's stopping them from having the best code search in the industry?

New ask Hacker News story: How to transition a team from Git-flow to trunk/CI-CD?

How to transition a team from Git-flow to trunk/CI-CD? 3 by chuie | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi all, this is my first job in a management position and I am feeling quite a bit of impostor syndrome, so I'd really love to get extra eyes on a plan to transition a team that uses git-flow with a weekly release cadence to transition to trunk and eventually ci/cd. First, there are regular problems that occur in and around releases, so this isn't busy work, some form of intervention is necessary, and because managing branch hell is part of the problem and something that git-flow is known for, moving to automation with continuous release sounds like a reasonable step. So my current plan is: Step 1: Keep current release schedule, but treat develop as if it were main. Add feature flags and minimum daily commit to develop. Step 2: Add CI/CD pipeline to non-live deployment, like blue green deployment. Step 3: Add unit/integration test gates to deployment of step 2. Step 4: Stay in hold

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What are the data compression characteristics of LLMs?

Ask HN: What are the data compression characteristics of LLMs? 3 by DietaryNonsense | 2 comments on Hacker News. Disclaimer: I have only shallow knowledge of LLMs and machine learning algorithms and architecture in general. Once a model has been trained, the totality of it's knowledge is presumably encoded in it's weights, architecture, hyper-parameters, and so on. The size of all of this presumably being measurable in terms of number of bits. Accepting that the total "useful information" encoded may come with caveats about how to effectively query the model, in principal it seems like we can measure the amount of useful information that's encoded and retrievable from the model. I do sense a challenge in equating the "raw" and "useful" forms of information in this context. An English, text-only wikipedia article about "Shitake Mushrooms" may be 30kb but we could imagine that not all of that needs to be encoded in an LLM that accura

New ask Hacker News story: Can I use university provided laptop for working on my own startup?

Can I use university provided laptop for working on my own startup? 3 by curor213 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I was given a laptop from the University where I am currently working towards my PhD. My professor approved a laptop for me from his available funds. The co-ordinator of the lab ordered it from Apples's website and it was first vetted and secured by the IT staff of the department. I am currently in my 3rd year and I came up with a product idea, unrelated to my dissertation. I am working on the idea using my university laptop, will that be an issue in the future, especially if I start full-time on my product (in case it works out).

New ask Hacker News story: 75% of USDC is backed by US Treasury Bonds (Good News)

75% of USDC is backed by US Treasury Bonds (Good News) 6 by louison11 | 3 comments on Hacker News. TLDR; 75% of the US dollars backing UDSC are held in US Treasury Bonds (virtually safest asset on the planet). The downside is thus very limited. There is a lot of FUD right now. But Circle (company responsible for the peg USDC <> USD) is actually very transparent and the data is independently audited every month (https://ift.tt/qsTO5jS Last month, Circle had $43.4B in assets. They've announced that $3.3B is exposed to SVB: that's approximately 7.6% of their assets (unclear how much they have right now, but it's in that horizon). In January, a total of $11.1B was held at banks (SVB+others). Everything else ($32.4B or approximately 75% of assets) is held in a fund as US Treasury Bonds. 75% of Circle's assets are thus basically insured by the US itself. Meaning that even if SVB were to give nothing back of the $3.3B it owes to Circle (unlikely, they'd at least g

Ask HN: Which stack is as boring (good boring) and cheap in 2023 as PHP? 4 by alentred | 3 comments on Hacker News. It is 2023 and I want to develop a web app (backend) as a part of an MVP. Here's the twist: I want to: - use boring technology - iterate fast - deploy with minimal cost for now The web frameworks I have used recently (Spring, Rails, Express, Django, Flask, Elixir) coupled with Heroku, or Fly.io, or Kubernetes - they just don't cut it for me. Don't get me wrong: I have used most of the above in production and they fit and perform well, not for an MVP though. The closest I had it to my taste was with serverless (Zappa on AWS Lambda), but it felt like the framework was quite immature by the time. Some long time ago I have been using PHP. I only have vague memories of copying files over FTP, having my site deployed instantly, and at practically no cost (hey, even with a "shared" DB). Development was fun, but I don't know if I am romanticizing it n

Ask HN: Is there any current “web of trust” social media? 5 by throwwwaway69 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I want something like reddit or twitter or HN, but only where I see content from people I've "trusted" and second and third degree etc trusted people from my direct trusts. I don't really like reading reddit anymore because I'm not convinced a large majority of the content is genuine. Reading anything in the news or anything political or even product recommendations just seems overly astroturfed and not genuine. Facebook isn't really an option because Facebook still puts crap in your feed that has corporate interests, and people don't really friend strangers.
