New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why not publish into the Public Domain, instead of OSS licence?

Ask HN: Why not publish into the Public Domain, instead of OSS licence? 6 by hutzlibu | 25 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, I am about to publish my long year project and have not yet choosen a licence. Anyone should be free to use it, for any purpose. (So definitely no copyleft licence) But why should I use any licence at all and not skip all this alltogether and choose the public domain? I mean, I still want the credit (and donations) directed towards me. But in my understanding there is not really a difference? Fraud happens with proper licensed projects, too (when some shady website repackages vlc for example and sells it as theirs or redirect donations) and claiming ownership of something you do not own is fraud either way? So what is the advantage of a common OSS licence, except the overhead of long license text (with maybe my name and email) to be included everywhere? Am I missing something important?

Ask HN: Should forced auto-upgrades be made illegal in a right to repair world? 4 by fouc | 1 comments on Hacker News. * To be clear, I'm talking about forced auto-upgrades that give no option to downgrade. The right to repair is mostly about hardware. But it's hard to ignore the software part of hardware. And that means having the right to keep and run old versions of software. Old software that work perfectly fine and do their job. Forced auto-upgrades are fundamentally hostile to the user's freedoms. Ever since the browsers introduced forced auto-upgrades, we've been moving away from an open web to an internet of closed silos. Forced auto-upgrades is often justified in the name of security. It's not worth it. The "good intention" of improving security through forced auto-upgrades is pushing us down the road to hell. In a way, we developers are responsible for all of this. We all jumped on the Chrome bandwagon, we all told our friends & families t

Tell HN: Consider listing your contact details 69 by cpach | 32 comments on Hacker News. TL;DR: Consider listing your contact details in your HN profile! There are lots of interesting conversations happening here on HN. But sometimes people might want to continue the discussions even after threads fall of the front page. Have you considered listing your contact details on HN so that people can get in touch with you more easily? If you want to do that, please note that it’s not enough to fill in the email field on your profile. Only the HN admins can see that field. If you want others to see your e-mail address etc, you need to explicitly put it in the about text area. Some members want to keep a low profile and I certainly respect that. But please consider what you might be missing. There’s also no requirement to use your main e-mail address. One could also use an alternative e-mail in order to stay pseudonymous. There are just so many interesting people here so I thought that one m

Milk-derived therapeutics for infectious diseases 3 by ishishah | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I'm Ishita, cofounder of Matrubials. Taken together, our founding team has ~100 years of combined experience in microbiology and ecology, food science and chemistry and my cofounders have previously founded other health companies with specialized products (eg. Evolve Biosystems and BCD Bioscience). We have been focused on structure-function analysis of mammalian milk and the benefits individual components can bring to human health for about two decades. In recent years, we discovered peptides in milk that have selective antimicrobial activity, meaning that they know who the pathogens are, and essentially go after them fast for elimination while bypassing the "good" bugs, leaving them around to continue

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How do I act at work as to not be disadvantaged?

Ask HN: How do I act at work as to not be disadvantaged? 5 by Ceiling | 3 comments on Hacker News. I don’t know how to communicate with co-workers and management as to not limit opportunities. If I’m reclusive, people consider me detracted and dull to be around and nobody wants to do much with the dull, reclusive man. If I’m open and friendly, I find that people don’t take me as serious and I potentially miss out on promotions and raises. Why give the man who’s happy a “please stay” raise? He’s happy! Why give him a promotion? We need somebody who’s not so friendly with people and is looked at as a leader not a peer. I also find it’s hard to be seen as a leader amongst peers if you’re friendly with them. How does one balance these two extremes? I want to be friendly and kind but I also want people to take me seriously.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is there a dedicated programming language for business logic?

Ask HN: Is there a dedicated programming language for business logic? 3 by username90 | 5 comments on Hacker News. I feel the main problem delivering value is that codebases are too big and complex. If we made a business logic language intentionally made to be sandboxed which doesn't let you refer to code in other files or include libraries that would help a lot separating business logic from infrastructure code. The way it would be used is that programmers writes some interface in their language, and then that interface becomes a compiler that can verify and compile a business logic script file. The script would run in a sandboxed environment with resource restrictions so it can't run too long or crash the server. Such a language wouldn't just help people write code files for apps, but could also enable just having a textbox field where you could add programs to filter or sort results to your liking etc. I guess you could view it in the same way as the popular regular e

Group changes into commits and rebase to build a better Git history 3 by your_challenger | 0 comments on Hacker News. You can read the markdown version [here](https://ift.tt/3fbLPFH) ## Problem statement We all have worked on a feature intensively and had to refractor a lot of the code base (in early projects). But can't spend the mental expense to context switch from `writing code` to `make meaningful commit messages`. A good commit history is at the expense of the developer, which results in breaking the "flow". As pg mentioned in his blog post [Holding a program in one's head][1], it be better to work in long stretches to have better developer productivity. And it is very common for devs to have to make code cleanups which are unrelated to the feature they are working on ([example tweet][2]) * Commit small and commit often * Writing good git commit messages goes a long way * get gud at git ## Scenario Lets say you are building a feature and mid way you came acro

We're not in a new area, so I'm hoping that somebody from HN can point me in the right direction. Reading about this it looks like I have two options: - I have to limit where my buyers / sellers can be located purely to countries I'm registered in for paying VAT. - I register for vat in all countries. - I have to find the 'minimum taxable threshold' for each country. If it's a reasonable amount of money, I include that country as allowed and wait until that country has earnt some amount below the threshold before regisitering for paying VAT in that country. The latter option seems the best, but finding the value for four countries took me 20 minutes earlier. Doing it f

Dr. Michael Osterholm's podcast and associated YouTube channel, The Osterholm Update: COVID-19, earned a YouTube strike against his YouTube channel for COVID-19 disinformation. I believe this strike was against episode 61: Divided by Delta, which was removed from the YouTube platform. His team challenged the strike and failed to remove the strike and his channel is at risk of being deplatformed for disinformation. In episode 62, he described his attempt at countering misinformation in episode 61 as the reason for having an algorithm capturing his post as disinformation. He's caught in the position of being unable to talk about the disinformation and countering said disinformation, because mentioning banned words could trigger the automated strike. Ask HN: How to store digital documents in a company 3 by SMAAART | 0 comments on Hacker News. My company is evaluating migrating from QuickBooks to a better financial ERP system. While the search is still underway, one thing is now clear: no matter what system we'll end up picking, the data conversion will not carry over the attachments stored with the transactions. And that's bad. So all along we have been using QuickBooks also as a repository of invoices, purchase orders etc and now once we upgrade we have a dilemma: * lose them all * continue to maintain and upgrade the QB license to maintain our digital database. There must be a better solution, or a market opportunity for a hacker in this forum. What do innovative companies use as a repository of digital documents? Mind you that while it's 2021 often we get PDF that are not searchable/indexable. Is there a solution or is this an unaddressed pain point?
