Ask HN: Do Smartphone Apps get audited? 2 by hosa | 1 comments on Hacker News. I remember I read that article in the past about the guy who reverse engineered TikTok, and thats how we found out it was collecting too much information about you.. Another article about some apps that monitor the clipboard which would allow your passwords to be revealed .. I believe Not just for security reasons , but for efficiency reasons as well, I have used several apps that for some reason consume too much power(cpu) or memory .. So my question is , what does Google and Apple do to protect its users? I would imagine an honest organization should exist whose mission is to take the source code from every proprietary app developer, analyze and audit it.. And publish its findings..

Ask HN: How do I get my brother into programming? 7 by frankdilo | 4 comments on Hacker News. My brother is a somewhat hopeless 21-years-old, working in the service industry, who never completed his studies and spent most of his teenage years partying. I am a software engineer, running a tech startup and earning a top-five-percent salary in my home country. Here is the thing: I bet my ass my brother has my same IQ (if not higher). He is deep into video games and crazy good at them and a good problem solver in real life. He might be missing purpose/direction and I think programming might be a way out. What's the best way to introduce him to programming in a way that's not dull and could sparkle his interest?

New ask Hacker News story: How would you build real time geospatial service?

How would you build real time geospatial service? 2 by swman | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm currently using Firebase + geofire to do very basic real time geospatial querying. Due to limitations, I cannot do additional filters, etc. I'd like to take it a step further but don't know much about putting together something real time and geospatial. The use case is simple, basically people can add animal sighting posts and other people can then comment on them or mark that they also saw such an animal (like bears or coyote). Just for fun, I want to have it be real time so I can see what's in my area and also if the # of coyote seems to be going up, etc. Since its a mobile app, a bunch of mobile clients will be listening for updates on posts in their area. What database technology can I use to put this together?

Ask HN: Help, my boss wants to us to use laptops from 2011 for development 4 by hnthrow12345 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I work at a coding school, and some of our participants don't have their own hardware. My boss wants to give them 11 year old laptops that have been donated to us. The specific model is HP EliteBook 8460p. I keep telling him that these laptops are not suited for modern dev work, even for beginners. We do Java backend work, so we need IntelliJ and docker. He says that as long as they work at all, it will be fine. It's ok if beginners wait a bit longer for things to compile. He's non technical by the way. I don't know what else I can say to him to make him understand that these devices are not enough. Please help. Posting this from a throwaway for obvious reasons.

Ask HN: Do you agree with Paul Graham? 4 by vladmk | 11 comments on Hacker News. https://ift.tt/3opSxuS In his fierce nerds essay he says meditation dulls you. “ Another solution may be to somehow turn off your fierceness, by devoting yourself to meditation or psychotherapy or something like that. Maybe that's the right answer for some people. I have no idea. But it doesn't seem the optimal solution to me. If you're given a sharp knife, it seems to me better to use it than to blunt its edge to avoid cutting yourself.” It seems to me he thinks meditation makes you less sharp...for me it only helps me focus better and work on more hard problems, kind of like taking a nap. Does taking a nap make you less sharp? Or increase your alertness? This is what I want cleared up because I don’t wanna waste my time practicing meditation, personally though there’s tons of study that show the mental benefits so My concern is giving people the wrong information about it.

Ask HN: Where to start with getting back into front end? 2 by throwaway_egbs | 3 comments on Hacker News. Gentle creatures of the forest, I'm a 40-something software engineer who, for the past ten years, has primarily been doing distributed systems backend work. Before that I was full-stack. I'm wondering what your recommendations are for getting back up to speed on the frontend world. I've dabbled in React, D3, and some of the modern browser APIs (fetch, promises, better DOM selectors). I'm vaguely aware of a thing called Babel. And apparently Node is used for more than just running a server. My confusion about where to focus my relearning efforts comes from an impression, rightly or wrongly, that frontend dev went kind of nuts and turned itself into a big mess. This is just my impression from the outside, not an informed professional judgment. It has seemed like we've been churning through frameworks, tools, and paradigms on a semiannual basis. Ask HN: Non-Subscription Paid Software Recommendations 2 by Fede_V | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, Does anyone have suggestions for great software (ideally crafted by a small indie team, but, anything is fine) that you've paid for that does NOT involve a subscription or various kinds of in-app monetization? I'm thinking of gems like Sublime Text, etc - which are really good for a single task and where you can buy a lifetime license for a reasonable price. Ask HN: Leaving company, how to make the most of vested options? 4 by Panther34543 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone, I have vested options which I'd like to turn into some liquidity. The company I work for apparently doesn't allow employees to sell shares (after exercising the options) to any of those third party marketplaces. Additionally, the company probably won't go public for a few more years. The company is profitable and growing, but for a variety of reasons (mostly personal) I do not wish to stay at the company. The vested options are definitely worth something, and I would like to extract at least some of their value immediately. However, I cannot afford to exercise all of the vested options, and so would want to seek financing. The only option I've found thus far, which seems to be what I'm looking for, is SecFi. They apparently offer a product to both finance the purchase and provide immediate liquidity without actually selling the shares. Doe

Ask HN: How do you manage dev db environment? 3 by markus_zhang | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi db experts, I'm curious how do you manage dev environments? Here is some background: - We use Vertica for prod/dev. Data team members share the same dev database. - We need to import data from prod to dev for testing frequently. At least a few times per Sprint per developer. - We don't control the databases. DBAs from HQ control them and the response time is from a few days to infinity. Here are the pain points: - If two or more developers are developing two different features for the same table, we have to make sure that neither breaks the table. - It's slow to import data from prod to dev. We tried vsql (the command line tool) and pandas and neither works great.

It could be a web-application or phone app, depending on the easiest and fastest development process. I'm familiar with the enterprisey way of doing this (for example spinning up a React app, cloud-infrastructure, deploy pipelines, etc etc etc) but I'd like to develop and iterate without a huge investment in time. Are there no / low-code tools or frameworks that would allow me to built an MVP around this use-case? I'm thinking of something that could be released to the public in limited fashion, not a purely in-house prototype or mockup.

Ask HN: Why aren't Interactive command-line sessions more common in CLI apps? 6 by fouc | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm especially talking about interfaces that include their own query prompt & internal menu system like the fdisk command on linux, or like the recently mentioned GameStonk Terminal [0] This is one of my absolute favorite types of interfaces because all the commands are easily discoverable, and it's easy to memorize combinations of commands that take you through the different levels of menus. Often I find when I see an exciting new command-line app mentioned on HN, I'm disappointed when it ends up being primarily operated by parameters only. For command-line apps that are intended to be used on a daily basis & used with different parameters almost every time, these types of apps could probably benefit hugely from offering a menu & query interface. Ask HN: Harvard or Stanford for Undergrad? 2 by HvsS | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I was admitted this last admissions cycle to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cambridge for undergrad. I want to stay in the US and study CS so it came down to Stanford vs Harvard. Stanford was a bit cheaper, has a slightly better CS program, and has a good location, so I ended up choosing Stanford, but it could have gone either way. Parents and people around me are questioning why I turned down Harvard for Stanford. Do you think I am missing out on anything by not taking Harvard? I feel a bit bad about missing out on the "old world prestige" that people keep referencing where I live; it seems Harvard has a lot more of that than Stanford. I am in the DMV area, by the way, if that matters (maybe that is why there is a bias for Harvard?). I know both are great, but I am having second thoughts, concerned that I could have made a better decision. Let me know what you think.
