New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Advice for turning my side project into a real business

Ask HN: Advice for turning my side project into a real business 2 by sounds231 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m a product-focused dev with 10 years experience at a-list startups. For the last few years I’ve been working on a side project. It has some traction and makes ~$600/mo even though my current product is pretty raw. I’ve recently put a lot of thought into the product and realized that there is a real gap in the market that I can fill and make this into a real business. This requires a pretty significant amount of work, which I’m slowly chipping away at with 2-3 hours per day. Of course there may be unknown unknowns but the path to something like ~$1M/yr seems very clear to me. Circumstances at my current day job have been getting progressively worse and I think it’s time to move on. I’m not full-burnout unhappy (yet), but getting more resentful every day. Unfortunately I don’t have enough cash saved up for significant runway. I’m 35 with family and living in the US so eating

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Self-hosted alternative to Apple Notes?

Ask HN: Self-hosted alternative to Apple Notes? 2 by hosteur | 11 comments on Hacker News. I find myself using Apple Notes more than I really like to. It is just so very convenient to be able to access and edit notes from my phone when I am on the go. However, these notes exist in a closed off world in which I can only access them from my iOS and MacOS devices. Since I also have to use both Linux and Windows devices quite a lot, I am seeking an alternative solution. Also, I do not like my notes being shared with Apple, so I strongly prefer deploying a self-hosted solution. What good alternatives are out there? From a tech standpoint, it should be able to implement the backend fairly simply by having an authentication mechanism, a REST API and a key-value store. This should easily scale to whatever a handful of people in a household could put in it. The bigger problem is probably the front end: for this to actually work well, there must be a client for MacOS, Linux, and Windows as we

Ask HN: What concept do you wish was already a XKCD comic? 2 by jpn | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've found that when explaining complex concepts to colleagues, nothing works quite as well as a good XKCD comic. Randall Munroe has a unique talent for distilling intricate ideas into simple, humorous, and highly relatable panels. It's amazing how often an XKCD comic can illuminate a concept, making it immediately understandable. However, I occasionally find myself searching for a comic on a specific topic, only to realize that it doesn't exist. This got me thinking: what concepts out there are still in need of the XKCD treatment?

Ask HN: Getting back into networking and attending events 2 by eaglehead | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have been trying to get back into attending in person networking events and conferences. New ask Hacker News story: Exploring the Challenges of Open-Source Sustainability – Your Thoughts?

Exploring the Challenges of Open-Source Sustainability – Your Thoughts? 4 by louis_clermont | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN community, I've been reflecting on the complex and often underappreciated challenges faced by open-source software (OSS) projects, particularly in terms of sustainability, funding, and community support. A few key questions have been on my mind: Sustainability and Monetization: How can open-source projects develop sustainable business models without compromising their core principles? What innovative monetization strategies have you seen or can propose that align with the ethos of OSS? Dependency and Corporate Support: Given the heavy reliance of big corporations on OSS, what can be done to ensure they contribute fairly to the maintenance and development of these projects? Should there be a more formalized expectation or framework for corporate contributions? Licensing Challenges: How effective do you find the current open-source licensing models, especi

Ask HN: What are some homeless shelter innovations? 3 by codingclaws | 7 comments on Hacker News. For example, it seems like most homeless shelters have tons of beds all together in one big room. New ask Hacker News story: Shopify let me down big time today

Shopify let me down big time today 3 by vietyork | 0 comments on Hacker News. Shopify's latest act has me rethinking their platform. Here’s the breakdown: 1/ Shopify Plan Change Trap: Switched from Shopify's Advanced to Basic plan post a 3-month trial. Picked the $39 option, the page clearly showed the $299-260=$30. I even saw the plan changed to $39 and showed up successfully. BUT my card got slammed with $299. No heads up content on the page, no authorization. Chatted with support, they saw my choice of $39, yet still hit me with $299. Their solution? Just a credit for the difference, ignoring the blatant unauthorized charge. 2/ Shopify Billing Trap: Was only changing my plan, but got an unexpected $124 app charge. Already had a $75 credit in the account, which Shopify blissfully ignored. Here's the kicker: I was on the 'Change Plan' page, not the full 'Billing' page. Shopify's billing UX? A total maze, leading to unwanted charges. 3/ Shopify App Cr

New ask Hacker News story: I hacked a BIG prize web game hosted by a popular supermarket chain

I hacked a BIG prize web game hosted by a popular supermarket chain 3 by fmdz | 1 comments on Hacker News. A few years back, a well-known supermarket chain, part of Delhaize Belgium, set up a prize game. It was a web game where your prizes depended on your ranking. Since it was a web-based game, you can guess what might happen With a few tricks, I managed to tweak the scoring logic. I could award myself as many points as I wanted in each round. The prizes were items worth more than $50 and there were over 100,000 items up for grabs. After realizing this and placing myself high on the leaderboard with way more points than anyone else, I reached out to someone at Delhaize, via Linkedin, and let them know about this serious vulnerabilities in their game. It's unbelievable, but they never fixed it, nor did they cancel the game. Of course, I never claimed my prizes, but it's quite a story about how nonchalant they were about the whole thing.

Ask HN: Is Python async/await some kind of joke? 5 by nbrad | 3 comments on Hacker News. Returning to Python full-stack development after a stint with Node, it seems like using async/await is not widely adopted enough in the Python ecosystem to actually use? In no particular order - Django doesn’t have an async ORM? ( https://ift.tt/exgTNFd ) - Django Rest Framework has no async support? https://ift.tt/sSTMoRu - SQLModel’s section on async support basically says “docs coming soon”? Yet this is designed to be used with FastAPI? Why would the docs not start with async/await? https://ift.tt/UPibqfn - SqlAlchemy/asyncpg => you can’t use it if you’re using PgBouncer (necessary most of the time with Postgres) in transaction mode? What?? https://ift.tt/w4ovBh0 - Ubiquitous “requests” library used in most docs examples, no async support https://ift.tt/SyoCB5b - Top package for GitHub REST API, no async support https://ift.tt/o502The - …on and on… What’s the point of my nice FastAPI serve

Ask HN: Working with ineffective volunteers at non profit as a solo entrepreneur 2 by throw-nonprof | 1 comments on Hacker News. Throwaway account to cover my tracks a bit. I'm a volunteer for a non profit that works with mental health as part of a ragtag bunch of men who have been affected by mental health. I'm also a solo entrepreneur with a very 'get shit done' mentality in my own world. The latter doesn't always mesh well with the former, and it's causing me some frustation with how long things take to get done. I report to a board of directors who aren't business owners, and they regard our organisation almost as a good cause whereas in reality it's a small business. There are donors (investors), customers (attendees) and staff (volunteers). Without going into too many details, I've had to step back from some internal tasks since I was compensating for a director's lack of action / insight. I've done this for my own wellbeing, but I k

My first impressions is that everyone knows only quite narrow field of the project. And it still surprises me as I'm used to opposite. Next thing that really struck me was how hard is to just approach someone and get to know him. As there are people sitting next to each other that have way different work. So you never know if what the guy next to you actually does, also it is hard to approach someone since most of the people spend large amount of time on online calls. Therefore you really never know if you can approach someone and don't look like an disturbing idiot. And lastly I feel like we are dealing with not that much of complicated technical products, but the complexity of work is created by all th

Tell HN: Cloudflare Hosted Illegal Content on My Domain 4 by leoh | 3 comments on Hacker News. I got an urgent email from Namecheap this evening that illegal content was being hosted on one of my domains. I checked the DNS and I had set the nameservers to Cloudflare, but had never used Cloudflare for hosting. How could this even happen? And what recourse do I have, if any?

As a solo founder and consultant i constantly deal with banks, insurance companies, shipping companies, and lots of other partners/suppliers/infrastructure out there in the world that is disorganized and pushes work on my back. For example banks. I do a wire and they charge $25 and then block it and waste 15 minutes of my time on the phone. This happens many times in my typical week and if you think about it the cost is enormous. How do busy people deal with this? Do they hire a part time assistant? How can they do bank stuff that requires verification? How can you trust them with your stuff? When do you know it is time to hire help?

Ask HN: Lenovo encouraging Chromebook users to install Linux? 16 by vector_spaces | 8 comments on Hacker News. I was surprised to see that Lenovo has a guide to installing the Linux distro of your choosing on a Lenovo Chromebook device. I guess the cynic in me expects that companies want you to use whatever OS is bundled with the hardware rather than encouraging users to use the hardware the way they'd like -- or at least that they wouldn't want to make it easy to overwrite the ChromeOS install by providing a helpful how-to! Can anyone think of why Lenovo would do this? I would expect that this would potentially draw the ire of Google, but surely Lenovo has thought this through and maybe knows Google doesn't care enough? Just curious if anyone can speak to Lenovo's incentive calculus here https://ift.tt/1ujz2ZM (Ps: the guide is somewhat out of date -- for those curious, this seems the way forward for Chromebook users looking to install a Linux distro of their choosi

Does anyone know what would be a good job for me? 2 by MountainMan1312 | 3 comments on Hacker News. Howdy! I hate to use this card, but I'm autistic and I'm struggling to think of what kinds of jobs I could apply for. So far all the jobs I've had have just kind of fallen into my lap before I knew I even needed the job. For the past several years I've been doing freelance carpentry, remodeling, and general handyman stuff. Work was booming for a while, but died out when lumber prices skyrocketed. I haven't had any jobs in months except for little oddball stuff family has me do out of pity (installing a door 2 weeks ago is the highlight of the entire winter season). I really need to find a job if I don't want to end up homeless, but I don't want to "just get a job" and be a mindless laborer. Before the carpentry stuff, I was a project manager, 3D CAD guy, and SysAdmin at a small industrial metal fabrication shop. I handled over $1M in (gross) sales

I think the R1 in Apple's Vision Pro is a discrete GPU, which would be significant since it would be the first time Apple has shipped a discrete GPU of their own design and could be an indicator that discrete GPUs in Macs are imminent. But I'm asking here because I haven't been able to find any knowledgeable coverage or speculation about what the R1 chip actually is. The confirmed details of the R1 chip are scant: - It does a lot of image processing and sensor data integration: "the brand-new R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones to ensure that content feels like it is appearing right in front of the user's eyes, in real time. R1 streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds"[0] - It has substantial memory bandwidth: "256GB/s memory bandwidth"[1] - It uses special, high bandwidth memory: "To support R1’s h

I found workarounds[1] online such as "DisplayLink", which requires custom drivers and a $127 external adapter, and "SiliconMotion"[2] which I'm unclear on how to use. I've seen people on Reddit say the experience barely approximates the native feel, with features such as "Night Shift" not being supported and noticeable lag, even for office use, which is what I plan to use it for. I made sure to purchase the adapter with the most advanced chipset available (the Startech device[3]) but I am worried the experience will be subpar. I chose an adapter to DisplayPort instead of HDMI thinking it might perform better but that's to be seen. Short of buying an M3 Pro MacBook Pro, which is obviously off the ta

Google has no incentive to provide good search results 6 by explain | 2 comments on Hacker News. Just a thought. There is no incentive for Google to provide good search results. If they provide good results, users perform one search, and click a link to a site like Reddit where they find answers to the question that someone has already asked. That results in: - 1 opportunity to click a Google Search ad - 0 opportunities to show Google Adsense ads Instead, Google would prefer to make the results poor enough that users: - do multiple searches, meaning more opportunities to click Google Search ads - click multiple low quality SEO-spam links looking for an answer, all riddled with Google Adsense ads As long as the quality is not bad enough that regular users leave in droves, this path will continue.

As everyone here probably, from 2010 to 2020, it took me not more than 2-3 weeks to land a new job, and could probably have 3-4 offers in that time span. I am an experienced Engineer, 15 years, published books. When I am applying now, 50% of applications through direct job posting yield no response. I go with recruiters and have a 99% chance of getting to the second step of the interview. After that, no matter how well the coding challenge went, I get a rejection with the reason: "Someone has more exact skill overlap", "Not experienced enough" etc. I am applying at around 15 jobs, and have yet to get one offer. And if people think that's not a lot. I am talking about 15 jobs where I am going through at least 3-4 steps, all at the same time. I see more hiring and higher salaries in the Blockchain space (And AI slowly) than any other field. Bigger names like Cloudflare,

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What are your most common tasks and painpoints in spreadsheet software?

Ask HN: What are your most common tasks and painpoints in spreadsheet software? 3 by marttilaine | 6 comments on Hacker News. Through a hobby project I've ended up implementing a spreadsheet app with support for lots of file formats (csv, tsv, json, ndjson, sqlite). The formula engine uses JS (e.g. the formula `max($('A1:A9'))` equals to excel formula `MAX(A1:A9)`. I also have a CLI which is capable of executing those JS formulas on files without the GUI. It has been fun to code but I don't know where to take this project (if anywhere). Turning it into a polished app requires a significant time investment still. Therefore I was wondering if there's some specific painpoints in the spreadsheet world that I could fix and provide a solution to the world via this app, since I have a solid starting point with it.

Or are you pretty happy with the status quo?

My government is surveilling all its citizens via ISPs. How do they do that? 6 by rrandy | 1 comments on Hacker News. I live in Switzerland and, a few days ago, a journalistic investigation uncovered the fact that the government's secret services are collecting, analyzing and storing "e-mails, chat messages, and search queries" of all Swiss people. They basically forced all major ISPs to collaborate with them to do it. There are no details about what and how they do that, except that they tap directly into internet cables. Also, the CEO of a minor ISP said that the Secret services contacted him asking technical details about his infrastructure. The secret services also said to him that they might want to install some spying equipment in the ISP's server rooms. Here's a relevant passage (translated from German): "Internet providers (...) must explain how some of their signals are decoupled (in german: ausgekoppelt). Optional reading: I've always been a curious person, interested in learning new skills and finding fun and useful ways to apply them. I don't know much, but what I do know are things I've set out to learn purely out of interest. Any success in my career has been mostly luck, and being somewhat articulate in a few key areas of IT. But not only has my professional life become monotonous and unchallenging, my drive for novelty and improvement in my personal life has also diminished greatly. In other words, I seem to have lost that curiosity. That drive to learn and apply new things. I'm not sure why this is, but my initial suspicion is that the lack of fulfillment I've experienced in the last ~5 years or so has left me feeling like continuing down the

Ask HN: At what point do the Cloud's datacenters become national security sites? 4 by samstave | 0 comments on Hacker News. In the increasingly interconnected global economy, the reliance on Cloud Services raises questions about the national security implications of data centers. As these critical economic infrastructure sites, often strategically located underground, underwater, or in remote-cold locales, play a pivotal role, considerations arise regarding the role of military forces in safeguarding their security. While physical security measures and location obscurity provide some protection, the integration of AI into various aspects of daily life and the pervasive influence of cloud-based technologies on devices, as evident in CES GPT-enabled products, further accentuates the importance of these infrastructure sites. Notably, instances such as the seizure of a college thesis mapping communication lines in the U.S. underscore the sensitivity of disclosing key communications

Why LLMs are not and probably will not lead to "AI" (an opion) 4 by kylebenzle | 1 comments on Hacker News. As someone working in statistics and peripherally machine learning it has been endlessly tiresome to hear LLMs be marketed as "AI" to an unsuspecting audiance. LLMs are no closer to AI than Alexa was this time last year. While the capabilities of Large Language Models are impressive, calling them "AI" remains contentious. Here's why some in the technical community, including Sam Altman, have our doubts: Limited understanding and reasoning: LLMs excel at pattern recognition and statistical analysis, but they lack true understanding of the data they process. They can't reason logically, draw meaningful conclusions, or grasp the nuances of context and intent. This limits their ability to adapt to new situations and solve complex problems beyond the realm of data driven prediction. Black box nature: LLMs are trained on massive datasets. This &

I don't work front end at all. But I am quite aware of the mountain of frameworks built on JavaScript to support modern web applications. I was reading up on WebAssembly and how one of its intentions was to allow people to write browser code in other languages of their choice. However it seems that is proving to be quite difficult and you still have to fall back on JS at some point. It got me thinking why don't Google, Mozilla, Apple (and Opera?) come together and build a non-JS interpreter into the browser? Google apparently tried to put Dart interpreter into Chrome but gave up somewhere along the way. So it seems possible, but just a matter of tremendous effort. Obviously right off the bat I can think of dozen issues with this suggestion. - This is huge engineering task, maybe impossible to achieve. Ma

The notion of achieving a true AGI, a system with human-like understanding and reasoning capabilities, seems more elusive than ever. The current trajectory of AI development, heavily reliant on data and computational power, doesn't necessarily lead us towards AGI. A few months back, my friend Alessandro and I, Andrea, embarked on a side project named SplenderAI, delving into AI and automation consultancy for local businesses. After continuous outreach to many of them in our area, our initial excitement was met with rejection – a typical part of the entrepreneurial journey. Upon reflecting on our outreach approach, we started investigating online tools for outreach automation (since we found it an extremely laborious process) but found them lacking. Drag-and-drop solutions requiring intricate setups or even the having to define “outreach sequences” didn't align with our vision, so we decided to build an AI tool for internal use to help us get clients. Through conversations with fellow entrepreneurs and contacts from hackathons, we discovered a shared dissatisfaction with existing solutions. This realization prompted us to pivot S

How much should your preference for certain programming languages influence your career decisions? For context, I find myself particularly inclined towards strongly typed languages - I've had a great experience with Go, for instance. This preference has become a significant part of my professional identity and comfort in coding. That being said, I see a lot of growth and learning potential in fields like AI/ML, which often favor more dynamically typed languages. Let's say an opportunity to work in this new field arises, but the job requires using languages like Python. Should the potential for learning and growth in a new domain outweigh the comfort of using a preferred language? Or is it valid to prioritize language preference, given how central it is to

Here is app: https://sociiity.com The main purpose of this app is to enable everyone to share any wrongdoing directly with their city. Many bad things happen to ordinary people every day, and they often feel powerless. But when these incidents are shared on social media, many people see them, and it makes the authorities pay attention. This pressure makes them look into the issue and solve it quickly. If bad actions are made public, they are more likely to be fixed, and fewer bad things might happen because people will be afraid of being exposed. Lots of crimes get posted on existing big social media sites, but a lot of them go unseen because of a lack of enough followers. It's like shouting in a very large crowd - your voice gets lost.
