New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is there a way to get back to the web we lost?

Ask HN: Is there a way to get back to the web we lost? 5 by headmelted | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been thinking for a long time about the web that I came of age with, which I’m sure will likely be different from the web that many of you came of age with, given how wide the community is here. My first introduction to the Internet was circa 1998, by way of an Acer Aspire very similar (if not identical, it’s been 25 years and the memory has faded) to this: https://ift.tt/adxcNHS When I first got to spend time on that machine (it was shared with the rest of the family, so time was limited) I was immediately drawn to the open web and how I could (in my own small way) be a part of something very new and incredibly big. I created a website, several actually, hosted on members.xoom.com (I don’t remember why not geocities, I just remember that there was a reason at the time). I met (and made friends) with people in countries around the world, and I was fascinated that in any direction

Tell HN: We take LLMs and Diffusion models for granted 4 by behnamoh | 0 comments on Hacker News. Just 3 years ago, the state of the art image generation models were mostly academic papers that would work in specific scenarios, but nowhere near the capabilities of DALL-E 3, Midjourney, SD, etc. Just 3 years ago, the state of the art chatbots were so crappy that no one thought soon they'd easily pass the Turing test. Nowadays we talk to ChatGPT, download a variety of open-source LLMs, talk about some LLMs being better than the others. But just remember: 3 years ago we didn't even have something like Llama 7b!

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: DoorDash does not refund fees or tip

Tell HN: DoorDash does not refund fees or tip 3 by hysan | 0 comments on Hacker News. If part of your order does not arrive, support will continually push you to take a refund and suggest that you can apply it on a re-order yourself. However, do not accept that. If you pay close attention, that refund total does not take into account any of their fees or the tip that you placed on the original order! If you refuse, they will keep telling you that they are unable to put in the re-order for you. If you refuse for long enough (over 15 min), then they will suddenly be able to put in the re-order at no cost. But they won’t expedite it. If you look over that new order receipt, you’ll see that it comes in below the offered refund and they don’t tip whoever is assigned your order.

New ask Hacker News story: Need advise on job hunting after a long career gap

Need advise on job hunting after a long career gap 5 by g_murad | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN Community, I have been suggested to bug you all for career advice since this community has been extremely helpful to several friends of mine. I have been struggling to re-enter the workforce after a long gap in my career. I have a highly analytical background having finished bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering and then working few years for prominent energy companies including British Petroleum. My duties involved heavy data operations such as gathering data from sensors, evaluating well performance and generating reports. After a few years in the industry I decided to go back to school for a masters degree. I obtained my Master's Degree from USC in Petroleum Engineering and spent a year after graduating to work for the university as a Research Assistant and a resource employee. As a resource employee we looked into how technology and more specifically AI and Machine Learning

Ask HN: Are startups still operating in 'default alive' mode? 4 by neilfrndes | 0 comments on Hacker News. Last year in May, YC sent an email[0] to its startups asking them to "plan for the worst" and try to be 'default alive' for 24 months. We took that advice seriously and drastically reduced our spend, which extended our runway at the expense of growth. I was wondering if other founders are still running their companies in 'economic uncertainty' mode, or things are relatively back to normal? Anecdotally, from talking to other founders in the Bay Area, it seems like early stage fundraising hasn't reduced as drastically as predicted, albeit at lower valuations. [0] https://ift.tt/LsowuEK

Ask HN: HN How to Get Feedback on Software Design Docs 2 by 8ta4 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm working on a voice transcription tool and I wrote a software design document. It's all text, no diagrams. It covers the technical architecture and functionality. - Where can I share it to get some constructive feedback? - How can I avoid sounding like I'm just promoting my work? I'm all for constructive feedback, but the internet's version of "constructive" can sometimes feel like a sledgehammer to the ego.

Ask HN: Effective Biohacks for Long Covid? 2 by nikolay | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've been having palpitation, hair loss, headaches, and elevated BP since April when I had asymptomatic COVID-19 (I found out later with a antibody test, which showed declining BAUs). I'm eating well and I've been following a normal anti-inflammation supplementation for years. I've seen a cardiologist and there's nothing particularly wrong with my heart and there's been no dietary or lifestyle changes for years, yet, based on the symptoms and antibody tests, it fits into the symptomatic of long covid. I would like to hear things that worked for others and the labs done to confirm and see the main culprit of this unpleasant disorder.

Ask HN: How much to believe Glassdoor and Blind reviews of a company? 3 by alfnki | 1 comments on Hacker News. I am interviewing with a small company and am growing concerned based on reviews of the company I have been reading. The reviews of said company on Glassdoor and Blind all have a common theme that the company hires great people, but the executives and leadership in general are just not good at all. The reviews range from "all in all its pretty good, management could use some work though" to "the company and product are going to implode this is so bad" so I'm not sure how bad it is there. I think it's impossible to know how true this until you work there, but I'm wondering how much stock I should put in these reviews and if I should just disengage from the interview process because of it or not.

Insomnia's update locks out prev user data, forces account creation w/o warning 10 by huy-nguyen | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm a long time user of Insomnia API client (https://insomnia.rest) without an account and was prompted to update the app an hour ago. I thought this was a regular feature update and accepted. After the app relaunches, it gives me the option to create an account with them or use without an account. When I choose the latter, my data is gone. Many others are reporting the same problem (https://ift.tt/EoxLBs1). It's actually a good app but this strong-arming behavior is simply unacceptable to me. What other choices do I have? New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Do high refresh rate monitors make it hard to go back?

Ask HN: Do high refresh rate monitors make it hard to go back? 2 by hypertexthero | 4 comments on Hacker News. I’m considering getting a high refresh rate (up to 165Hz) 27in screen as a primary monitor to take center-stage away from my 75Hz one, which would become the secondary screen for gaming and streaming, and primary screen for graphic design. A concern is whether I’d become ‘spoiled’ by playing games at higher refresh rates and thereafter perceive 60fps in games as ‘slow’, thus ’creating’ more of my own graphics performance issues. Any thoughts on this?

Ask HN: Are there positions that an autistic software engineer can hold? 6 by big_question | 7 comments on Hacker News. I've been in the industry a bit less than a decade. I consider myself decent on the technical side, but interacting with people is extremely draining. For example, if I know I have a meeting the next day, I often can barely sleep through the night. During the meeting, I need to expend a massive amount of effort to collaborate. This obviously affects my work life, but more importantly my personal life. I have never gotten negative feedback for my work and have steadily climbed up the ladder, but ultimately I feel like I can't continue in a regular agile/scrum/other process-driven company. Mentally it's not sustainable for me. Where could I find a job where I can focus on my strong sides, i.e. technical expertise, good written communication and ability to work alone? Or maybe there is some other tech-adjacent industry that I could go into instead? Any rec

Ask HN: Hit a wall with my ongoing game project because of patents 4 by AndrewPGameDev | 3 comments on Hacker News. I've been working on a custom renderer that uses compute shaders to do pathtracing. The idea was to use Rust/WASM/WebGPU so I could upload a demo directly to the web, so people could play it as easily as clicking a link. Additionally I thought that I could achieve acceptable performance with a combination of new techniques and algorithms as well as using lower-fidelity textures+meshes. Over the past 1.5 years I've basically read every single raytracing paper published in the past 10 years, and have been slowly working to implement relevant papers into this renderer. Recently I found out that one of those papers was patented, and there's no way to use the ideas inside it[1]. This by itself is not a huge issue as I can avoid using the technique and I don't think it will have a massive impact on performance. The bigger issue is that I don't know what o

Have things changed or do I remember the past with rosy glasses?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why does Apple want me to expose my iPhone password to repair my screen?

Ask HN: Why does Apple want me to expose my iPhone password to repair my screen? 7 by dsrtslnd23 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I went to the Apple "Genius Bar" today to get my iphone screen repaired (it shows only a white screen). They told me I need to disable the "find my iphone feature" before they can start the repair. This requires me to confirm it on the phone itself - which does not work due to the broken screen. So the apple staff handed me a "Showcase iPhone" of the apple store which had a "apple support" app on which I need to enter the password of my phone. I have no idea what this apple support app is doing or if it is legitimate at all (ass this is a show phone where many people have access to). I ended up leaving without repairing the phone and now consider to go to an unofficial screen repair shop. From a security point of view that does not look like a very good approach. Any thought on this?

Ask HN: How do you adapt after early retirement? 5 by ishiz | 1 comments on Hacker News. I wonder how many people here have retired early and have found it hard to relate people who are still working? I have had three different jobs since the start of COVID-19 due to the ebbs and flows of the tech industry and economy. The transition to working remotely was also difficult for me, and I wanted to return to the office. That sometimes requires moving, and this is challenging when both spouses are working. Around 18 months ago my spouse and I agreed that we would experiment with her retiring. Her new "job" would be taking a larger proportion of the household chores, and helping me with administrative chores I used to do alone like budgeting, financial planning, house repairs. We don't have children so she has time to pursue her hobbies nearly full time. In some ways this has been great. She regularly says she feels lucky to have the opportunity to do this. Ask HN: Is there a technology you loved but had to abandon? 3 by bicx | 1 comments on Hacker News. I recently started my own software development agency after 14 years in startups. Because I’m now in a position to set the technical direction for many small businesses who have no established engineering team, my technical choices have a long-term impact for their future ability to hire engineers with relevant knowledge. I’m also someone who deeply enjoys working with Elixir and Phoenix. However, I’ve quit investing in that stack and I don’t plan on recommending it for my clients. I think Elixir is a fantastic language and I’m highly productive with Phoenix, but I can no longer justify my personal investment in that stack due to the small pool of engineers who have relevant knowledge. The ecosystem is also quite weak in comparison to JS or Python, and that can have a major impact on productivity. Now I’m doubling down on TypeScript with Python as a secondary choice. No niche framework

Ask HN: Any way on Linux to support OMTP or CTIA headphone remote? 3 by sandreas | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, on macOS systems with audio jack it is possible to use in-ear headsets with a remote to change volume but also use media key codes like play/pause, next, prev, etc. (similar to iPods) On my MacBook Pro 2015 with Apple Earpods I can control every playback action via this small headphone remote, e.g. Music, Youtube Videos, etc. Headsets from other brands with a remote (e.g. SoundMAGIC E11) are NOT supported. On Android devices with audio jack (e.g. Google Pixel 4a), Apple Earpods are NOT supported but SoundMAGIC E11 are working. After doing some research I found out the reason for this: Basically there are two different standards (CTIA and OMTP), both made for mobile devices. Both use an audio jack with 4 connectors (instead of the normal 3), also called TRRS. Apple uses CTIA standard, Android devices use OMTP standard where the pinouts switched the aux channel. In Bot

Ask HN: I'm a SWE without a CS degree. Will online certs help me get into FAANG? 6 by jdjdjdjdjdjd | 6 comments on Hacker News. I studied humanities in university. But I've been programming since I was a kid, so it was a natural career choice. I regret not doing CS. I work for a public sector org and have been promoted to a senior developer. But I still don't think this is enough for me to make the move to FAANG or other tech companies unless I stay here for a long time to rack up experience (I only have 2 years SWE experience at this point). Also, as the org I work for is not a tech company, I'm not sure how seriously recruiters will take my time here. I've studied data structures and algorithms, and I think I am a decent programmer. How does HN get away with not requiring users to verify with an email? 3 by syndicatedjelly | 2 comments on Hacker News. How does HN get away with not requiring users to verify their account with an email address? From what I understand, requiring users to verify accounts with an email address is to minimize the creation of spam accounts and reduce the likelihood of the user engaging in anti-social behavior. From what I can tell, HN never required me to use an email address when making an account. How are they able to avoid the above issues?

During the time of "The Social Dilemma", the idea of "if you are not paying for the product, you are the product" was so often repeated that it became a cliche. Everyone was talking about how bad all of the tech companies were tracking you, how Big Tech was destroying small businesses with their practices, how it was responsible for destroying mental health of younger people and even how it was destroying civic debate by increasing polarization and deepening the political and ideological divide. Today, during an interview where Elon Musk merely suggests that Twitter could start charging from all users as a way to fight the spammers and to keep away people who do not actually bring value to the network [0], all of the reports are about how stupid the idea is and how such a move would kill Twitter. Hi HN, I'm digging around in order to find a way to get back the SQL statement from a compiled statement with bound parameters (avoid SQLi) for others DBMS. I've found - with excitements- that the SQLite C interface have a sqlite3_expanded_sql()* function to get exactly what I needed. As I didn't found anything for SQLServer, I thought - at first - that it was just not possible at all because the SQL statement and parameters were sent separately (or, kind of, maybe the same compiled blob but without any chance to building back the raw SQL statement). For example, the raw SQL statement is : SELECT * FROM Genre WHERE Name = ? The bound parameter is : "Pop" I would like to get back : SELECT * FROM Genre WHERE Name = 'Pop' Maybe it's a profane question but I did spend a lot of time around in order to find what I need. Ask HN: Can I realistically build something that makes money in 6 months? 5 by c7DJTLrn | 2 comments on Hacker News. I realise variants of this question are often asked on HN, so I apologise in advance. I'm a DevOps/Software Engineer and I've just left my job at a large company you likely know of. In short, the project I was on imploded and management were sociopaths, so I've been in a depressive state for a while. Financially speaking I'm in a good position, so I'd like to allocate 6 months to see if I can build my own thing. I have a number of ideas, but I'm having a hard time separating the ideas I'd like to build from the ideas that will have paying customers. I don't have any prospective customers yet either. Frankly speaking, I have no experience getting people to hand over their wallet for something. Am I out of my mind or is this doable?

The CVE was assigned specifically to Chrome and it says “through a maliciously crafted HTML page”, but wasn’t the iOS bug specific to iMessage? That is also the part I don’t understand fully. Quite a few software/projects have pushed an update for their libwebp versions now, so that’s why I am curious.

Pros: - Lots of interviews, quickly. - Great network of high quality companies. No need to network for yourself. - Negotiates one offer vs. another one for you, often increasing the initial offer by like 10k. No need to get out of your comfort zone and do this yourself. Cons: - Asked me to be exclusive. If I had branched out and used 3 at once, it would have probably gotten out, and don't know if I would have been dropped. - Takes a percentage of your salary. Which for me isn't bad, because in my mind I wouldn't have gotten the negotiated salary bump, or even the opportunity in the first place, if it wasn't for her. I just wanted to learn other peoples experience. Fwiw I'm in Chicago now, where I used the recruiter for finance type jobs. Before, I was in SF and just rel

What is the purpose of the initial "press any key" screen that often displays before the main content of a game? I'm hoping there are some folks here from the gaming industry who have firsthand experience implementing these initial screens. The possible reasons I found included: - The screen functions as a "book cover" for your game, showing the player what the game is about - It allows for preloading without the user noticing - If multiple input devices are connected, this allows the game to infer which one the player wants to use - Some platforms may require user interaction within X seconds, and the initial screen enables this somehow (?? Since we are hosting the code on Gitlab and it's included, I gave Gitlab Service Desk a try. It works well but there's some friction when creating a ticket, e.g. it's not possible to integrate it programmatically into a web app ("Submit issue" form). Also I would prefer to have support separated from the development aspects. So far I've tried Freshdesk, but was immediately turned off by the massively bloated user interface and gazillions of settings. Front looks polished from gazing at the landing page (haven't tried it yet), but seems to focus more on B2C with an emphasis on omni-channel messaging. Also the smallest plan is 2 seats at 19 USD/mo. which is a bit much for our current usage. Zendesk feels bloated. Freescout is OSS and allows self-hosting, b

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Electricity Rate Arbitrage?

Ask HN: Electricity Rate Arbitrage? 2 by pc2g4d | 1 comments on Hacker News. One issue with solar and wind is their intermittency. But (my economics / engineering mind thinks) if we have a market for electricity where the price of electricity depends on current moment supply and demand rather than a fixed rate (time variable pricing, I think is the term) then the market itself should, over time, address the intermittency. So, when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing and the price is negative, savvy operators of battery storage, pumped hydro, etc. stock up on energy for later. Then, when it's the middle of the night and the wind's not blowing, the price spikes, and those who stored energy ahead of time make a profit providing that energy when it's needed most. Of course this is an abstraction, and I'm not an expert, but... are there utilities whose rate structure enables execution of this kind of arbitrage business model?

I quit my previous job and am considering starting my own business. I've recently been browsing Y Combinator's Co-founder matching platform (https://ift.tt/HXDvYpR). This has many people who have a) impressive credentials and work experience, b) good ideas based on their real work experience and c) a desire to grow these ideas into a $100M+ business. Sadly, the last of these is where my interest wanes. I don't have dreams of being astonishingly rich or successful (why, I'd be happy with a measly $1M business - if it wasn't too much effort to run). I don't want to take on lots of funding and staff and the pressure that entails. I'm more interested in a "lifestyle business" - perhaps one that I can run part-time after an initial period, that doesn't have lots of deadlines, but still

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Do we still need Electron?

Ask HN: Do we still need Electron? 2 by grumblingdev | 0 comments on Hacker News. Each platform has it's own webview control available as a shared library installed with the OS. MacOS has WKWebKit based on WebKit. Windows has WebView2 based on Edge/Chromium. Linux has webkit2gtk based on WebKit. Tools like Tauri use a simple cross-platform single-header abstraction called webview.h[1]. Electron no longer allows Node.js to be called from renderer processes, all communication with Node.js is done via IPC. In this case, why do we still need Electron? Why does it have to be tied to V8/Node.js? The fact that Chromium Embedded Framework exists and is third-party makes me think that Chromium wasn't designed for being embedded, and Electron is filling that gap. This is elucidated here further here https://ift.tt/bXWfB4Y > it's difficult to reuse their work...if another WebKit-based application or another port wanted to do multiprocess based on Chromium WebKit, it would be nec

Ask HN: Best place to sell old computers, Commodore PET e.g. 2 by NovemberLegend | 4 comments on Hacker News. I have a few machines that I'd like to sell, realized that I'm never going to get around to refurbishing them, replacing the electrolytic caps, etc. Searches mostly return eBay sellers, when I look for current prices. But it seems like I'm missing something. Is there such a thing as an online antique computer marketplace, the equivalent of the M.I.T. Flea Market, maybe ? I'd like to be more confident in the prices I'm putting on them, and it seems like eBay is the only thing being promoted by the search results. I'm near Boston, btw. Machines are: Apple II, Macintosh Plus, DECstation 5000/120, Commodore PET 4032, Amiga 1000

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Tech that seems to have vanished

Ask HN: Tech that seems to have vanished 6 by araes | 3 comments on Hacker News. Main Question: What tech do you remember over the past years that seems to have withered or vanished from the public zeitgeist? (even if it's really just stealth). Motivation: Was reading "Ian Wilmut, Creator of Dolly the Sheep Dies" [1] today, and realized that Dolly was born back in 1996 (>1/4 century). Yet, I rarely, if ever, read about cloning of any kind until Dolly's creator dies. Notably, this appears to be a case where the tech is being used, yet not written about very much [2]. The list of species cloned is pages long, yet I have not read about any of these in major news. [3] Cloning hamburger (cattle)? Cloning housepets (canines)? Backup housepets in case Yeller falls in the well (Sooam Biotech, South Korea, was reported in 2015 to have cloned 700 dogs for their owners @ $100k / each)? Other examples from my own view: Graphene - First sighted 2004, still cannot buy graphen

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why Did Yelp Fail?

Ask HN: Why Did Yelp Fail? 4 by michaelteter | 3 comments on Hacker News. Yelp was once _the_ source for reviews and sometimes photos (for restaurants). Then something happened, and then it seemed to just fall away. ? Was it Google Maps (with reviews)? ? Was it disputes about reviews, or questions of financial influences or censorship of reviews? It's been long enought that perhaps some insiders can share details without risk...

Ask HN: Why are most LLM libraries dead projects now? 5 by behnamoh | 3 comments on Hacker News. Microsoft Guidance is not continued anymore (last commit = 1 month ago). Minimaxir/SimpleAIChat seems to be abandoned (last commit = 1 month ago). rogeriochaves/langstream was updated two weeks ago and has only two issues, both open. kyang6/llmparser was updated 5 months ago. Some other projects that seem abandoned due to no activity: young-geng/EasyLM 1rgs/jsonformer newhouseb/clownfish What's going on? Did people find that their secret weapon is the library they use, so they started building their own private libraries?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why Python relative import is so fundamentally broken?

Ask HN: Why Python relative import is so fundamentally broken? 2 by akasakahakada | 2 comments on Hacker News. Seems that relative import is implemented as relative to where the python.exe executed instead of the place where the file is. So the nature is depending on where you run the doctest or where you put your jupyter notebook, all imports inside the project will break!

Ask HN: Pointers to resources for an internal security review 3 by aazo11 | 0 comments on Hacker News. We would like to do a comprehensive security review of our product and code pre-launch as we interact with user databases. While we are well aware of SOC 2 (and might eventually get certification), are interested to know if the community knows of good checklists or other materials they can share. Searching on Google is pretty useless as the SOC 2 companies flood the results with clickbait and SEO garbage.

New ask Hacker News story: FYI: Google Workspaces's High-Priority Security Events Take 4 Hours to Trigger

FYI: Google Workspaces's High-Priority Security Events Take 4 Hours to Trigger 3 by apimade | 0 comments on Hacker News. Do not rely on Google Workspace's Security Alerts and Events for anything critical. If your organisation suffers a targeted phishing attack, you'll notice that alerts within your Security Centre don't trigger or fire very quickly. In fact, it might take several hours - which we found out a few weeks ago trying to monitor and test incident response on a VIP's account. I've attempted to ask Google on this several times - as well as asking simply, "should I rely on Google's Security Alert Centre for Incident Response", to which they respond each time with: --- Upon checking the following Help Center article [1], we can confirm that this is working as intended: “Note: Gmail alert notifications may arrive up to 4 hours after an alert rule is triggered.” [1] https://ift.tt/3duvk0t Kindly note that I'm just an email away if you h
