New ask Hacker News story: Python dev considering Electron vs. Kivy for desktop app UI

Python dev considering Electron vs. Kivy for desktop app UI 2 by joshlikesai | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey folks, I'm working on building a simple desktop app for Windows and Mac that needs a basic chat interface and ability to set up API keys. I know Python but not JavaScript/React. Should I go with Kivy since I know Python, even though I haven't seen great-looking Kivy apps? Is it possible to make decent looking apps with Kivy? I hear people say it is but I'm yet to see an example that looks nearly as good as what you get with JS frameworks. Or do I bite the bullet and learn Electron/React for a sleeker UI, despite not knowing JS? I'd like to get this done quickly without too much ramp up time. Kivy has the bonus of potentially compiling to mobile too. But a nice UI is important. What would you recommend for a Python dev looking to build a decent looking desktop app UI without too much overhead? Thanks!

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why are there no no-name inkjet printers?

Ask HN: Why are there no no-name inkjet printers? 4 by tobwen | 0 comments on Hacker News. TL;DR Are there any DIY or "asia clones" of injekt printers that can compete with cheap branded products? For years, users have bemoaned the seemingly planned obsolescence built into inkjet printers by major manufacturers. They struggle with questionable universal ink formulations (which might destroy the printer header) and resort to illicit maintenance programs to reset (waste) ink tank counters. Replacing components is either impossible or involves such high labor or part costs (printer head) that it results in a total loss. The European Union has responded indirectly with a repairability mandate. However, simply being repairable doesn't address the potential for spare parts to have built-in expiration dates. I realize that millions are spent on development and the devices are financed by inks and spare parts - but today you can get even laser and 3D printers with highly compl

Is anyone else receiving daily political texts or spam messages? 6 by josenyc | 8 comments on Hacker News. As a developer who relies on text message alerts, I've had to block nearly daily texts in the past few months. These texts, asking for donations, opinions on polls, etc., are becoming a nuisance. It's ironic that the same individuals advocating for an end to spam calls are the ones engaging in this bothersome behavior, targeting potential supporters. I’ve observed similar behavior through email as well.

Ask HN: What's the best way to expose random CSV/.xlsx files for future queries 3 by mtr | 2 comments on Hacker News. What's the best way to expose random CSV/.xlsx files that I can query in the future? We're house hunting and it would be nice have a local db to keep track of price changes, asking prices, photos, etc. And look up (local) municipal OpenData for an address and grab the lot size, zoning, etc. I'm using Airtable and sometimes Excel, but it would be nice to have a home (hobby) setup for storing queryable data. Could be cloud hosted but "affordable". I'm very comfortable in Excel (Pivot Tables, but don't speak SQL. Reasonably comfortable with PowerBI. But that's about it.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How do I improve my emotional intelligence

Ask HN: How do I improve my emotional intelligence 5 by user0x1d | 3 comments on Hacker News. I feel like I’m very self aware, both internally and externally. I know that what I will say (because of the way I will say it) will be delivered badly and probably make the person sad/angry, but I cannot find a way of fixing the words I use! I feel like I have a big problem with my emotional intelligence. To fix this, I am looking for a book that is what “The mom test” is to customer discovery, but to Emotional Intelligence. What I mean by this is a book that actually contains suggestions of what to say, word by word, and how to be able to think and articulate what the other person might come to think. Any suggestions?

New ask Hacker News story: ChatGPT – Computer Says No

ChatGPT – Computer Says No 3 by aaronrobinson | 1 comments on Hacker News. ChatGPT has become so lazy that it's now quicker for me to research things myself. If I ask it how to do anything with any software it gives me generic responses like "log into the site and look for options related to security". This is even the case for their site where I want to switch from Google auth to self controlled. You have to now really push it to research anything. I suspect this is not some kind of learned behaviour but OpenAI themselves tweaking the model to stop people overloading the service with things they can use Google search for. It's exhausting. What are my options here? Are other LLMs following the same pattern?

New ask Hacker News story: Are we all doomed? Why?

Are we all doomed? Why? 3 by gcj | 0 comments on Hacker News. I think it's become clear the great age where being a software developer meant you could never be unemployed is done. One of my favorite podcasts (Soft Skills Engineering) has been talking about it for months. My article about how to easily find a job as a dev, which got me literally hundreds of e-mails of thanks, no longer makes sense https://ift.tt/T1sVhep. I myself have just been laid off, and since I was foreseeing the decline of the company, I have been firing CVs away for MONTHS and couldn't find any decent offer. Not even a half decent one. Hell, a friend who's worked at Twitter, among others, can't find a job. Is this AI? Is it a temporary decline of the market? Caused by what? Is there still any niche where we can be employed faster as we could just a year ago? Are we all going to die?

Ask HN: Create a Simple Website/Blog? 3 by neetokami | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've created a neocities website but I didn't like how hard it was to program, I understand you need a Domain and DNS setup with all of that, but my question is what is the absolute basic barebones way to go about this? For reference, I want this website to be simply split into a resume/professional side and a creative/personal side with very few pictures or graphics mainly just text. Which online services or steps should I take to achieve this? My only requirements for it is to have a custom name (with a .xyz or .com) and just a few redirect pages to different areas of the website.

Ask HN: CVEs Comparison Brave vs. Firefox. Incorrect CVEs for Brave? 2 by WorldDev | 1 comments on Hacker News. I am trying to compare Brave Browser to Firefox, on the security dimension. One of the metrics I am looking at is the number of CVEs. It's obviously an imperfect metrics (they all are), but I thought it might be useful. Over the last 2 years: - Chrome has [648 CVE](https://ift.tt/Qlt4J3u) - Firefox has [380 CVE](https://ift.tt/Qlt4J3u) - Brave has [2 CVE](https://ift.tt/Xy8rORA) How should I think of the Brave/Chrome CVEs? I assume that most Chrome CVEs affect Brave as well (since they share the Chromium codebase), so it seems like the numbers of Brave CVE is incorrect?

Ask HN: How to find a fullfilling career after a data science job? 2 by gajnadsgjoas | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi all! I have a friend that has a stable job, but hates all data extraction work, running pipelines and debugging legacy code, as a result procrastinates a lot, but doesn't know what other profession can be enjoyable and fulfilling. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How common is developer burnout? Have you ever been burnt out?

Ask HN: How common is developer burnout? Have you ever been burnt out? 61 by Desafinado | 48 comments on Hacker News. When I graduated from college I found a job working for a Fortune 500 where I completed a pretty complex project. I was there for two years and it felt like a stressful meat grinder. The experience was so bad that I quickly pivoted to a less stressful role, and have been there for quite some time now. This has got me wondering: how stressful do people find the software industry at large? There seems to be a big draw for young developers to try to go FAANG, but honestly, these companies just sound like another high-performance meat grinder. You get paid a lot but are constantly under scrutiny. And smaller companies are all going pseudo-agile to try to squeeze every last ounce from their developers. This makes me wonder if finding a low-key, sane culture is the key to sustainability in the industry, and avoiding burn out.

Ask HN: What is your approach for managing personal digital assets? 3 by ben_hn | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've been facing this issue for quite a while and haven't come across a solution that meets my needs. I have many files and digital content scattered everywhere. Some files and texts in my email accounts (personal and work). Some in Storage services such as Dropbox, GDrive, ... and some in messaging apps. There is also the photo gallery on my phone. These are photos, videos, text, pdfs, ... . The challenge comes in when I'm trying to find a specific file or info. I often find myself asking questions like: - Where's the photo of me wearing a cap? - Where are all my invoices from before 2023? - Did my friend ever text me his phone number somewhere? - ... I'd really appreciate any advice or recommendations for tools or methods you've used that worked for you.

New ask Hacker News story: Tokyo – Salary Expectations

Tokyo – Salary Expectations 3 by uavhacker | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone, I'm thinking about moving to Tokyo with my family. I have been accepted (but the salary has not yet been agreed) for a senior C++ role for a well-known Japanese company. The move would be very appealing to me, especially from a cultural point of view. I have a Masters Degree and over 12 years of professional development experience. At home, in Europe, with a very low cost of living, I have an income of about 170.000€ per year as a self-employed developer. I have two children, but they would have to go to an international school. I did some research: for both of them, that's about 4 million YEN (approx. 24,000€) a year. I'm thinking about asking for 20 million YEN. What do you think?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Who runs the spam bots? And why?

Ask HN: Who runs the spam bots? And why? 6 by preciousoo | 4 comments on Hacker News. Mostly thinking out loud here, but this is the best place I know to ask about things like this. Ive been on the internet for a while and one thing that’s stayed consistent are the chat bots. From large social media to forums for friends only, the bots will come. I’ve always theorized about who runs them and why. From running my own web server and seeing logs, I figure they find forums the same way they find vulns, by crawling for forum software signatures. But why? What is the return on this kind of enterprise? Why do large social media platforms have such a hard time finding and banning them? From my knowledge of how gaming admins run things, they don’t instantly ban cheaters on detection, but do random waves, as not to give information away. But some platforms have had bots for years! Twitter has had a huge bot problem basically forever, and the bots have gotten bolder and more diverse since Elon

New ask Hacker News story: Flipper Blackhat: A Linux-Based WiFi Tool

Flipper Blackhat: A Linux-Based WiFi Tool 3 by machinehum | 0 comments on Hacker News. As an electrical engineer, I asked the Flipper community a while back what hardware add-ons they would like to see developed. The top reply was "evil portal that supports WiFi passthrough" meaning the user is connected to the internet after the portal attack. This got me thinking: the ESP32 is a powerful but simple, bare-metal microcontroller. They're awesome but limited in ways. If you put a powerful Linux microprocessor on top of the Fipper and connect two WiFi radios, you'll end up with a very sophisticated device. So that's what I'm working on, and I made an update video here: https://youtu.be/RVjA3HURUa8?si=hbplsUVfqiI7IYF2 AMA, and thanks for the support and project idea!

Ask HN: Success stories from McKinsey (et al.) 4 by ramblerman | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I'm frustrated as this is my 2nd company where I've seen a high level executive consult mckinsey (or a similar consultancy). And then implement a plan that destroys any humanity, and just slowly destroys our product/spirit over the next 2 years while the best people leave and we are left with extremely bureacratic and terrible processes. I was speaking with my wife tonight who is not in IT, but had an ex-mckinsey CEO move in to the company 6 months ago, and it just seems like the same pattern. I've always thought these consultants where there to provide "cover" for high level executives who didn't have a clue. I.e. nobody every got fired for hiring mckinsey. I'd be curious to hear stories where it went well.

Ask HN: In-game purchases: addiction or harmless entertainment? 4 by MichaelRo | 3 comments on Hacker News. What do you think about children making frequent in-game purchases? Is it a dangerous dopamine addiction similar to gambling or just the reinvention of coin-operated Arcade machines? There's a lot of discussion of the former but not so much on the fact that paying money to play might be just a re-invention of the 80's coin-operated arcades. In this case it's not THAT bad, right? I need to make up my mind, do I harm my kid by paying real money to buy him in-game currency? Like enabling a gambling addict? Creating a future gambling addict? Or it's just playing Street Fighter on the arcade, harmless and fun? https://ift.tt/atP9R3z

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How is the Spotify app so bad?

Ask HN: How is the Spotify app so bad? 6 by erlich | 6 comments on Hacker News. The library tree view is so terrible. - You cannot shift+click select to easily add playlists into a folder. - Any podcasts you follow cannot be moved into folders to tidy things up. They just clutter the sidebar. - You have to click on a tiny arrow to expand a folder. Clicking on the folder navigates inside the folder. The fact that podcasts are in the same Spotify mega-app is terrible too. And the podcast experience is a complete mess. I listened to an interview with the head of Spotify product, and he talked about how great it was to have everything in this mega app. I just feel the opposite of everything he said. It's one of the most popular services in the world, but has one of the worst user experiences of all the apps I use. And they actually think they are doing a good job at it.

Tell HN: YNAB will partly remove direct bank imports 2 by SeriousM | 0 comments on Hacker News. It was a bummer to me that the famous budget app YNAB announced in a private in-app message that the direct bank data import will be removed. The reason is that they use TrueLayer as an immediate platform as data provider. TrueLayer implements bank interfaces with the status of "private beta", "public beta" and "GA". YNAB now stops supporting "private beta" banks yet charging the full price for a reduced product feature portfolio. I was talking to the Manager of Direct Import at YNAB, asking her about compensation or whitelist working "private beta" banks. Here's her statement: > I am genuinely sorry this change impacts you. We don't have a way to make an exception. And we don't offer discounts on our subscription price. We will support your bank again when TrueLayer moves it to the public beta phase. New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: ChatGPT has become untrustworthy

Tell HN: ChatGPT has become untrustworthy 6 by gtirloni | 2 comments on Hacker News. This has happened for several weeks now with GPT-4: I ask it how I can do something that I know is possible and just want it to get me the right syntax. It will say "X can't be done with Y but you can use Z, here's how". I know it's possible so I just say to it "I can't believe doing X with Y is not possible" and it immediatelly says "yes, doing X with Y is possible here's now"... and now I don't know if it's just "complying" or if it's really possible or not (maybe something changed and it's not possible anymore?). So now I have to go to Google/Kagi and search it myself to confirm it's giving me the right-ish answer and not just playing nice and hallucinating. I've cancelled my ChatGPT subscription today until/if they can ever get it back to how it was several months ago. ps.: Claude 3 Opus doesn't seem to suffe

Ask HN: History of Industrial Research Labs Outside Xerox PARC and Bell Labs 2 by linguae | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello. I am very interested in learning about the history of industrial research labs from a computer science standpoint. In addition, I am very curious about what life was like at labs outside of Xerox PARC and Bell Labs. Much has been written about these legendary labs, but I’m less familiar with HP Labs, DEC’s Systems Research Lab (founded by Bob Taylor when he left Xerox PARC in 1983 due to clashes with management), IBM’s labs, and not to mention the labs from corporate Japan, particularly those from Sony and Fujitsu. Xerox PARC and Bell Labs were known to have a culture of freedom during their heydays. I’m wondering if other labs had this level of freedom in the past, or if they’ve always been more bottom-line oriented than Xerox PARC and Bell Labs were.

A bit of context: college junior majoring in CS, have always been interested in tech and startups. As an international student, I'm projected to graduate from college at $300k USD in debt. I attend a US state school so I'm already on the lower end of cost of attendances for international students. International student loans also have high interest rates of ~10%. My age is atypical for a college junior as I'm already in my mid-20s. I somewhat agree with "22 and 32 you are in your best startup years" in https://ift.tt/L4tNOST having felt a drop in energy in the last few years. Post-graduation I have two options: 1) Founder route in my mid-20s with my loans. If things don't work out, then big-tech/SWE it is to pay off the debt. When I chatted with a YC partner, this is what they mentioned as common though I think most cases are US citizens who can defer

Ask HN: Small, flat mice for tiny hands? (Similar to the Magic Mouse) 3 by solardev | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, I have kind of an unpopular opinion / question here... for decades now, most standard mice have been extremely uncomfortable for me, leading to finger and wrist discomfort after a day or two, and severe pain if I keep it up for a week or longer. I've tried dozens of them from Microsoft, Logitech, SteelSeries, Razer, and others, including ergonomic models, ambidextrous models, trackpads, trackballs, and trackpoints. The only one that has been consistently comfortable for me (surprisingly) is Apple's Magic Mouse (https://ift.tt/rv1iHyh). Its nearly flat shape means I can "palm/fingertip grip" it instead of "clawing" it, if that makes any sense (https://ift.tt/G7qBC8O). Its small size means I can comfortably wrap my entire hand around it, unlike most mice. I can left-click with the entire upper part of my hand (i.e., three fingers can left

Ask HN: Why Is Setting Up an Azure Account More Difficult Than AWS? 2 by Lucasoato | 0 comments on Hacker News. Has anyone else found setting up an Azure account to be particularly challenging compared to AWS? Our multinational company initially created our Azure account outside the EU, and we've faced numerous hurdles trying to move it to an EU state. Issues ranged from unrecognized credit cards to confusion over subscriptions, admin roles, and permission settings. It feels unnecessarily complex. AWS seems to encourage creating multiple interconnected accounts, a stark contrast to Azure’s limitations. Is this a common experience, or are we missing something? Appreciate any insights or tips.

Ask HN: My flat startup just became a pyramid. Now what? 3 by throwaway_zev | 4 comments on Hacker News. I work at a startup that was, until recently, embarrassingly flat. No middle managers. But not because we were believers in consensus - we just had initiatives from the CEO and CTO, and a lot of people scrambling to achieve them. To my eternal surprise, we're doing better than most of our competitors, we've grown 10x since I joined, and no layoffs are on the horizon. I really thought I'd be leading a project by now or managing, and I essentially am! Just not officially. So we're finally getting some structure. But not promoted from within. All hired from outside the company. We've gone from having no VP of anything to having Executive VPs who hire other VPs who hire Directors, in the space of a few weeks. I really thought we were going to hear that our CEO had been fired by the board, but to my surprise he has not been. I'm not sure what to think about it.

Scammed by the top result for 'Bitcoin wallet' in Apple App Store 6 by habeanf | 0 comments on Hacker News. Earlier today I decided to switch my Android for an iPhone. After moving all my apps I decided to make the jump and move my bitcoin from the android wallet. I searched for 'bitcoin wallet' on the Apple App Store, installed the first app I saw (as far as I could tell, looks legit), transferred bitcoin, and it immediately got sent off. Turns out this app was previously reported at least 12 days ago as a scam ( https://ift.tt/370Tpiy ) but its still up there, #1 search result. I get that I've failed to vet the app but honestly, how does a scam app become the #1 organic search result (not promoted) in the app store, topping binance, blockchain.com, and coinbase?

Also the disappearance of the dislike button makes it even more difficult to filter out uninteresting content. Not so technical that it would require intense focus, but also not overly dumb content.

If you have domains with web.com / networksolutions.com and you have defined custom nameservers meaning you put in an IP with a domain name and in the past it updated the root DNS servers then do not change it. The UI will let you change it but they no longer have the ability to update the root DNS servers with your custom nameservers that you or your company manage yourselves. The NetworkSolutions.com UI will let you do it, but it won't actually do anything . This is per their support team. I do not know when or why they lost this ability. I am also no longer able to call anyone there, it's web chat only. To be clear(er) this is for custom name servers that you manage yourself, not their name servers and not for DNS servers that are already defined in the root anycast clusters. If anyon

Ask HN: How do you test performance of navigations between pages? 2 by hysan | 0 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been reading up on how to measure and analyze website performance. Every tool and article I’ve come across is focused on performance of single page loads. However, my understanding of various SSR frameworks is that loading a website for the first time can be very different from navigating to another page on the website. For example, Next.js’s page router will only request the JSON of an SSRed route when navigating. That can change the perceived experience for the end user. Why is there so little focus on testing page navigation speed? (articles and tooling) Am I looking in the wrong places or has SEO made information like this impossible to find? Any suggestions on articles or tools to look at?

An Apple Store salesperson today recommended the new M3 MacBook Airs to my mother, because "The M3 MacBook Air will last longer than the M2". So how true is that? This salesperson has brilliantly/unwittingly struck at my mother's pet peeve, since her previous 2011 MacBook with outdated Safari and Chrome can no longer display online banking webpages properly. I'd think that the M2 and M3 being the same family would still have roughly the same long-term lifespans, for the sort of light home-office work of the sort my mom needs at least 5+ years. Is the M3 really more future-proof as the Apple Store salesperson claims? The other issue I have is the small nonupgradable 8 GB memories in both base models. Curiously, the base models are $100 different, but the M2 + 16 GB upgrade costs even more than the base M3. Maybe the pricing will change again in a few

In over 16 years of investing, including the 2020-2021 meme stock frenzy, I have yet to see anything like the past year or so and especially the past 2 months. Just how relentless Nvidia is. And at the same time, Apple, Google ,and Tesla have fallen a lot, yet the indexes keep going up, thanks to Ai and chips. Who else feels like they left money on the table by missing out on Nvidia, selling too soon, or being invested in the wrong tech stocks like Apple, Google, or Tesla. People say " market overextended, it will fall" or "bubble" yet it keeps going up literally every day for weeks on end. Even in the 90s and 2020 it was not like this. Is this like the Singularity actually happening or something. Is this truly a new paradigm.

Ask HN: A Lisp with Cargo/NPM like build system? 2 by nate-sys | 0 comments on Hacker News. I love lisps, and have played with a bunch of lisps, and schemes. My biggest pain point so far is that almost none of them have a Cargo-like package manager and build system, where packages are installed locally (as in within the project itself), and the project has a predetermined directory structure and entry point. I understand that one of the biggest things most people love about lisp is how much control you have over every single aspect of it and that contributes to most lisps not having a Cargo, per se. The user crafting their own build system __is__ part of the intended experience. But, sometimes I just want to `lisp create my-project` and `cd my-project && lisp repl`. Most importantly, I want to `lisp add a-dependency` without it going to some global directory where conflicts can happen. I am intentionally not mentioning Clojure here because I have been playing with it for a l

Fix Mac Mini static screen on wake from sleep by pressing Esc 2 by seam_carver | 0 comments on Hacker News. Intermittently, about once a day, when waking my Mac Mini M2 from sleep, I'll get full screen static instead of the lock screen. A google search indicates this is a common issue with the HDMI port on the Mac Mini, especially but not exclusive to 1080p DVI. You can fix it by simply pressing the Esc key to turn off the display. Then pressing any other key will bring up the lock screen as normal. For reference, I'm using a 1080p DVI monitor. I'm using an HDMI-DVI cable. I've tried 2 cables, a 2m one and a 1.5m one. My screen is too far away to use a 1m cable. Safe mode makes no difference. This is much more convenient then prior solutions, which include power cycling monitor, unplugging the HDMI, waiting ~20 seconds, or using a USB-C to DVI cable.

Is SaaS reporting enough in today's data-driven world? 2 by heraju | 1 comments on Hacker News. Traditional SaaS reporting often involves a manual, time-consuming process of selecting and organizing data to generate insights. However, the logical way of building reports is just a fraction of what we can truly show our users. Imagine having a database with 150 tables – the sheer number of combinations for joins is staggering. Using the formula for combinations, we can calculate the total number of potential joins: C(n, k) = n! / [k! * (n - k)!] For our database scenario: n = 150 (total number of tables) k = 2 (number of tables selected for each join) Plugging these values into the formula: C(150, 2) = 150! / [2! * (150 - 2)!] After computation, we find there are 11,175 possible combinations of joins for our database. This complexity highlights why AI-powered reporting is superior. AI algorithms can swiftly navigate through vast amounts of data, identifying patterns and generating
