New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Resources for understanding shifts in Chinese policy

Ask HN: Resources for understanding shifts in Chinese policy 3 by anm89 | 0 comments on Hacker News. It feels to me like a pretty substantial sea change is happening in Chinese politics right now given the crackdown on large companies, the crack down on for profit education, the crackdown on video games, the 3 child policy, changing posturing on Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the South China Sea. For many other topics I have go to youtube channels or blogs I'd go to to learn about it but I'm not coming up with a lot of great resources on this. I'm not looking for a politicized narrative, more like a detached analysis of the situation. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm especially interested in long form monologue or dialogue youtube content. For the record, I'm actively not looking to debate Chinese politics in the thread and asking others to refrain as well. It seems like there is no shortage of threads to endless fight about China on here recently, not looking t

New ask Hacker News story: Idea: Non-Recourse Founder Loans

Idea: Non-Recourse Founder Loans 5 by waveid | 2 comments on Hacker News. Would you take out a non-recourse (zero liability) loan against some of your shares in exchange for interest + shared upside? For example, if you have $10mm in founder equity, would you take out a $2mm loan against your shares for personal liquidity? If the value of your shares went to $0, you would owe $0. But if you IPO'd and your shares were worth $100mm, you would pay $2mm + interest ($250k?) + 10% shared upside ($1.8mm).

Fun non-profit side project ideas 2 by curl-up | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi all! I'm a data scientist (specialized in retail analytics) and I quite enjoy my job. However, recently, I've been having a lot of free time, and I'm looking for a fun (but challenging) long-term side project which is not 100% in my domain. I do not care about making money, and I would prefer it to have a "physical" dimension to them. Some examples I'm thinking of: Building a face tracking drone, Using OpenBCI sensors, Adding functionalities to XGO Mini "robot dog". I'd like to hear more ideas from you, especially if someone has some practical problems they think are worth solving. If anyone is already working on something like this, I'd love to join you.

Ask HN: Wanted, non-technical co-founder 2 by david927 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm looking for someone to come in at a 50% split for a company, Court Bell, that already has its product ready. The initial product: Each year, millions of Americans fail to appear in court for low-level offenses, & arrest warrants are issued. Studies indicate that text message reminders reduce failure to appear rates by up to 21%[1]. For courts, the costs associated with missed hearings and arrest warrants are quite high but the cost to defendants resulting from missed court dates is even higher. HearingReminder.com will provide email and text message hearing reminders nationally, free to users, for millions of Americans. I'm the head of data and application development for a state supreme court. The National Center for State Courts loves this product but the problem is that getting it into each state/county nationally requires a lot of communication. Courts have the money and this save

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Search a YouTube video's title on Google to get chapters

Tell HN: Search a YouTube video's title on Google to get chapters 2 by Jugurtha | 1 comments on Hacker News. Some YouTube videos have helpful "timestamps with descriptions" to help navigate the segments of the video, which are called "chapters". Not all authors go through that effort, though. When a video does not contain "chapters"/"timestamps with descriptions", you can quickly copy the video title, then search for that on Google's search engine, and it will likely return an "automatically chaptered" video. Example: This video of Richard Feynman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36GT2zI8lVA does not contain "chapters". However, this search query, simply copy pasting the title, returns one with "chapters", labeled as "key moments": https://ift.tt/3gLgE4O.

Feeling burnt out from my 10x colleague, how to move on from this? 2 by birdyrooster | 3 comments on Hacker News. Part of why I have liked my job in the past is because I feel useful. I have a colleague that is so incredibly good and applies himself constantly (works after hours, weekends, during vacations). He writes at least 5x more code than me and its giving me an inferiority complex something fierce. How the heck do I break out of this mentality and become more productive? I feel like I am going off the rails and I often sit down to work and do nothing all day feeling this way. I don't want to end up on a PIP. Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!

Ask HN: How do you circumvent low upload bandwidth limits in the US? 3 by dwrodri | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm trying to build a bit of a homelab at my apartment in the US (East Coast), but there just aren't any ISPs which offer good upload bandwidth in my area. I find myself often wanting to move around 5-250GB of data, and I'm looking for a way to do that quickly. I can think of two approaches: 1) Rent a cloud instance, and use their high bandwidth connection. 2) Rent a bare metal server, and use their high bandwidth connection. What service would you recommend for solving this problem? My two main use cases would be: 1) Download files quickly to the server. 2) Send files quickly from this server to another device. The cloud computing is full of so many different services that I'm having a hard time even comparing a cheap linux server to something offered by a cloud provider. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Even though Ory Keto is more well known, Authorizer seems to be a step ahead by already supporting subject set rewrites, one of the key core concepts from the original Zanzibar paper (the lack of which being a major handicap). Also, how do you manage cascade relation tuple deletion upon deleting the corresponding object/subject resource (e.g. user/group/etc)?

But I wonder to what extent there are even more insidious methods, which I coined "shadow suppression"? Say, if instead of an all-out shadow ban a moderator (or automated scripts, for that matter) would tweak some algorithmic parameters that instruct the platform AI to limit someone's freedom of speech in very specific ways. Just like a person based on their PII and content can be accurately targeted by ads, they can be accurately singled out and subtly limited in the amount of influence they can have on the platform. Unlike a shadow ban this may never be noticed. A person's non-controversial opinion may pass through, while their political statements are directed to a small echo chamber of other people. They will never reach the audience they are intended for. The possibilitie
