Tell HN: 2x PHP RCE CVEs with CVSS 10.0 Incoming 196 by petecooper | 30 comments on Hacker News. A reliable source has indicated an announcement is scheduled for 22 October 2026 at 18:00 CEST regarding 2x PHP RCEs with a CVSS score of 10.0. I have no evidence beyond "source: trust me, bro", but if you're running PHP in production, be ready to update as a priority. These CVEs reportedly relate to remote code execution in all affected PHP versions from PHP 5 onwards. These are the two reserved CVEs for the reported upcoming announcement: CVE-2026-109618 CVE-2026-109619

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is Wikipedia going to be obsolete soon?

Ask HN: Is Wikipedia going to be obsolete soon? 2 by piratesAndSons | 2 comments on Hacker News. Recently they began showing a download-our-app ad at the top of the site, and it made me wonder: is the website going away soon? Wikipedia was a fixture of the Web 2.0 era, but now websites are changing. Chatbots are taking massive traffic from websites. Young people don’t like reading text; they prefer watching videos and listening to podcasts. Websites are seen as the old way of doing things, which is why Wikipedia has begun building its own app, since Gen Z is trending this way.

Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand? 3 by rzk | 9 comments on Hacker News. I saw this LinkedIn post from a Meta engineer and it resonated with me: https://ift.tt/LQdziJw > I'm an engineer at Meta and I never felt this uncomfortable doing my job. I'm writing code these days and it all feels like a black box. This new standard of shipping with AI is moving so fast that if we're going to spend our time checking each line of code, it's going to take forever. That means you can end up with systems you've built where you don't truly understand how all the code works. You understand the high level, but not every detail. And maybe this is becoming the new standard. It goes against every instinct of being a software engineer. I'm used to understanding what I'm building. Now I'm trying to figure out how much I need to understand before I'm comfortable moving forward. Are other engineers feeling this too? How are...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What Got You into Rust?

Ask HN: What Got You into Rust? 2 by cloaky233 | 3 comments on Hacker News. Back in 2024 I was experimenting with prosthetic arms and trying to figure out how to build one with an EMG sensor. The problem I kept running into was that the EMG sensor kept crashing the Arduino IDE. It spat out data at an extremely high rate, and my RAM couldn't keep up with it, being on a potato laptop. That's when I thought, "Okay, maybe let's try Rust. What's the worst that can happen?" This is the first thing I ever built in Rust: https://ift.tt/Eft3sZg I used a sliding window: keep deleting the oldest values and keep pushing the newer ones onto the graph. It looked a bit like a snake chasing its tail, but it's what actually worked for us later at the Smart India Hackathon 2024 Hardware finals (we didn't win). Sharing something from back when trying something new and building something new felt exciting. Maybe we'll never get to build things quite the same way ag...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How can we stop UX people from changing UIs to get promotions?

Ask HN: How can we stop UX people from changing UIs to get promotions? 4 by ex-aws-dude | 0 comments on Hacker News. Every product seems to go through constant UI churn that has no benefit to users other than changing around whitespace or refreshing the look. If you have a full time UX person they _must_ change the UI of your product otherwise there is no way to get promoted. That is just an unavoidable fact of incentive structures. As a company how can you avoid that issue?

New ask Hacker News story: How do you deal with AI Output of your boss?

How do you deal with AI Output of your boss? 5 by okr | 5 comments on Hacker News. So, my boss goes on a rampage. You can clearly see the joy and at the same time the rage and impatience. AI is the tool he always wanted. We are too slow. Process is out of the window. No need for sprints anymore. No planning, just doing. All people downstream must somehow adapt. Whenever i see now his automated messages in slack, my natural reaction is: why do i even bother reading that? Thats for machines to read. He does not need me? Clearly i am not made for that. What is he expecting me to do? To confirm how great the AI did the job? Should i remember all these perfect presentations AI has created and integrate it into my doings into the coming weeks? I am torn. Should i really free my AI and deal with all this incoming text? Is this the way to react on this perfection? I am not mad at him, it clearly frees him of all the burder of dealing with people. I just dont know how to deal with this outpu...

New ask Hacker News story: Twitterwebviewer.net Is Back Online

Twitterwebviewer.net Is Back Online 2 by orange999 | 0 comments on Hacker News. https://ift.tt/RCqZUVA Previously, twitterviewer.net, which had some annoying ads, was seemingly the only website of this type left. But now twitterwebviewer is back. It doesn't have anywhere close to as many ads as twitterviewer does. I don't know exactly when twitterwebviewer came back online. The owner of the website didn't announce on here or Reddit or seemingly anywhere else that he had restored the website, and I discovered the website was back a few hours ago by accident when I was doing a google search to get to the similarly named twitterviewer. So now, even if you don't like all of twitterviewer's ads, there is an option to read Twitter without an account.

New ask Hacker News story: Are there any more startups with real technical challenges?

Are there any more startups with real technical challenges? 2 by artifix | 4 comments on Hacker News. I'm a technologist with 25+ years of hands-on experience across all IT roles and hundreds of technologies. I've done it all: from startups to Fortune 500s, from desktop applications to global distributed systems to AI dark factory harnesses. But I'm bored. I want to work with a startup who's taking on real challenges, challenges that require the kind of engineering expertise that gave us the microprocessor revolution and the real birth of Silicon Valley. Yes, everyone is talking about AI. Sure, in the right hands, with the right ring-fencing, AI is great, and there are plenty of great startup ideas around AI. At the same time, there is a lot of disinformation. The risk is that many of these startups will fail because they lack the serious engineering needed to use AI to its maximum potential. But I'm looking for something else. Do you have something that shifts t...

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: ChatGPT on macOS grants local computer access to cloud account

Tell HN: ChatGPT on macOS grants local computer access to cloud account 4 by lxgr | 0 comments on Hacker News. I recently started a conversation on ChatGPT for macOS in "Work" mode with the "In the Cloud" execution option enabled. I was expecting this to run on a cloud VM, just like "Work" conversations started on chatgpt.com When I continued it in the browser (e.g. via right clicking it on macOS and then selecting "Open on chatgpt.com"), I was pretty shocked to learn that it actually had (and still has) access to my local file system. I could just prompt it to list files in my home directory, in /Applications etc. I never have opted into this behavior in the macOS app, nor does there seem to be any way to deactivate it. It's somewhat documented for enterprise accounts [1], and it can be deactivated for those in the admin panel, but this seems like the wrong place: Why should this be possible to activate remotely? Can anybody confirm this ...

New ask Hacker News story: JNISleuth-MCP – Recover Stripped JNI Bindings and Ollvm Branches for Ghidra/Ida

JNISleuth-MCP – Recover Stripped JNI Bindings and Ollvm Branches for Ghidra/Ida 2 by akdapunk | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I’m a security engineer focused on Android anti-malware and reverse engineering. When reversing hardened Android apps or wild malware, one of the most tedious parts is crossing the Java-to-Native (JNI) boundary when `.so` binaries are stripped, methods are bound dynamically via `RegisterNatives` inside an OLLVM-flattened `JNI_OnLoad`, and `JNIEnv ` vtable calls decompile as raw pointer offsets like `(*(code *)( param_1 + 0x548))`. I built JNISleuth-MCP to automate that workflow: 1. It parses multi-DEX APKs for `native` declarations and sweeps `.rodata` / `.data.rel.ro` (or section-header-stripped `PT_LOAD` segments) for `(char* name, char* sig, void* fnPtr)` triplets. 2. It statically resolves ARM64 OLLVM `CSEL` + `BR X8` indirect branches and `.rodata` jump tables in `JNI_OnLoad` (and can patch them in-place with direct `B.cond` / `B` instructions). 3. F...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to slow down AI development speed(also, estimate my ideas)

Ask HN: How to slow down AI development speed(also, estimate my ideas) 3 by aac1122 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello everybody. So, the first: we should abandon likes and go to top-lists instead of them, and say "this is on first place of importance", "this is third place", and finally we will find the medium: "2nd place in average" . To avoid sybil-attacks and get needed money, we may register proofs that we are really person with this e-mail, date and place of birth, first and last name to charity companies - they may reveal data about you like "this is a unique person", "this is 18+ person" etc., whether we want to deanonymize registered person or not.(Proof of Personhood/PoP + Sovereign Identity?) Then, we should alarm/whistleblow the AI disaster as the most important things in the world* Then, we should watch somehow who uses/trains AI. Some suggestions: OS, providers, antivirus systems. If you're closing this data or open...

New ask Hacker News story: I don't think image containers supporting both lossless and lossy is good

I don't think image containers supporting both lossless and lossy is good 4 by functionmouse | 1 comments on Hacker News. In all discussion of the modern image formats JXL and WebP, it has been mentioned that the formats support both lossless and lossy encoding, as if this is some sort of breakthrough feature. I think, at the very least, lossless and lossy image formats ought to use a different container, or file extension, so that -I- can differentiate them. As long as there is this sort of ambiguity, and unless search engines widely add a "lossless" option to their advanced image search tools, I will keep searching for "filetype:png" when I want a lossless image. Hey, maybe some Googler could convince their boss to convince their boss to add the "filetype:lossless" flag, to support these new formats?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?

Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed? 4 by Ixander | 3 comments on Hacker News. I sometimes run across comments where someone says they want an open-source router. I wonder if this is a viable idea for someone to start as a small company. What makes me hesitant is that, first, it looks like this already exists in several wireless and non-wireless routers (like the GL.iNet Flint or OpenWrt One), and second, I assume hackers would just make their own. I have been flashing DD-WRT to my routers for many years. My current setup is an Archer C9 that connects via cable to an Archer C8, which then wirelessly bridges to an R7000. All of them run DD-WRT. If I had "fun money," I would buy a low-power SFF PC with dual NICs, run OPNsense or OpenWrt, and use the wireless routers strictly as access points. Since I don't have that much to spend, I look for older DD-WRT friendly routers, usually under $30, on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, and flash them myse...

Ask HN: How do swarms of AI agents work? 5 by dsrtslnd23 | 1 comments on Hacker News. It is a bit strange how new model is released and hour after there is commentators declaring it complete trash and embarrassment to the AI industry, or the best thing since sliced bread. Ask HN: Are there AI models for generating sounds based on a text and reference? 6 by onemiketwelve | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've been having a hard time finding a solution. New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Uceprotect is extorting website owners

Tell HN: Uceprotect is extorting website owners 2 by goldenmember | 0 comments on Hacker News. I recently discovered by accident that our website was being blocked by Orange's security filters. After a quick check, I found that our IP address is listed on UCEPROTECT Level 3. The listing is based on the reputation of the entire ASN 14061 (DigitalOcean, US) [1]. In other words, even if your IP did nothing wrong, it will still be listed because of its ASN. If your site is innocent and listed only because it's hosted on DigitalOcean, UCEPROTECT offers to whitelist it for about $30/month or $108/year [2]. I checked the ASNs of several other popular hosting providers, and they're all listed too. So if your site is hosted on DigitalOcean or any other major provider, it's probably blacklisted as well. That can cut you off from customers on mobile networks like Orange, whose "cybersecurity protection" uses blacklists like UCEPROTECT to filter traffic. Honestly, in m...

New ask Hacker News story: What did Google do to its Linux terminal on Pixel phones

What did Google do to its Linux terminal on Pixel phones 3 by Steaglsz | 0 comments on Hacker News. You can't use the app without having the permissions "always on" for microphone and nearby divices I also think they changed the internal language because the terminal app used w3m up until the recent 753 mb forced-update. So after a few months of learning what w3m was, it wasn't even installed anymore in the freshly updated terminal app I also can't figure out what needs to be turned on/off to prevent the terminal app from crashing if I leave it idle for more than a few minutes The solution is to just use termux, but the pixel was a work horse when combined with the text based web. Now it's just a horse I have to prod with cd every few minutes to get back to where I was

New ask Hacker News story: Chamath says open AI models are "commoditize your complement." Agree?

Chamath says open AI models are "commoditize your complement." Agree? 2 by Dinuda | 1 comments on Hacker News. Chamath's argument (https://ift.tt/PCm0n28): companies give away the thing they dont sell for free, so the thing they do sell is worth more. Meta makes money though ads, Google and Microsoft from cloud. The losers are companies whose business is selling access to closed models. But still companies are paying more and mroe for closed models anyway! Does this theory hold up?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is anybody producing good code with coding agents?

Ask HN: Is anybody producing good code with coding agents? 4 by ruffrey | 4 comments on Hacker News. This is a genuine problem that I hear from senior engineers. I'm looking for a solution. -- The quality of ai-generated code is (claude, agy, copilot, codex a little better). It's exhausting to read. I used to love learning from my experienced colleagues and taking pride in what we made. We spent time on elegance and craftsmanship. Now I spend nearly the whole workday slogging through convoluted code riddled with footguns. I ride on hopes and dreams I might understand a changeset. It takes 5x longer to review Claude merge requests and I barely understand what I approve. Each day I drift further from understanding as I shovel the same into the codebase. The solution seems to be, reach "level 4 autonomy" and don't read or write code anymore. -- WHO HAS SOLVED THIS PROBLEM? PLEASE HELP!

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: OVH price increase for dedicated servers

Tell HN: OVH price increase for dedicated servers 2 by esher | 2 comments on Hacker News. Since October 1 the OVH price increase also applies to running dedicated servers, at next renewal. A Reddit user posted that their two servers went up 54% in 11 months, no grandfathering. OVH's own post: an Advance-1 Gen 2024 renews at $114.99 instead of $89.99 (+28%). RAM options on new orders are up 68% to 652%, the Game range up to 87%. The stated reason is DDR5 costing six times what it did a year ago. Hetzner did the same in February and June, both threads had 500+ points here. I run a small PHP hosting company, so I am biased. But I wonder: Who here still runs OVH or Hetzner dedicated boxes? GitHub can f..k you and you are forced to love it. or live with it... 5 by anonymous_frust | 1 comments on Hacker News. In January, Hytale launched in alpha. The owner said: “We officialy support mod” and “As long as the code isnt obfuscated you can decompile it.” Those were his words. I was on the official Discord, among thousands of players wanting to create servers and mods. Everyone wanted to move fast. I saw an opportunity. A huge wave I could surf. So I decompiled the server JAR and started creating comprehensive modding documentation. Three sleepless nights. Two more days. Twenty coffees. My reverse-engineering skills, boosted by AI, working overtime. Finally, it was ready. I published it on GitHub and shared it with the community. Developers thanked me. Two people joined the project. Then I woke up on Sunday morning. Account suspended. Both collaborators? Suspended too. GitHub said my account had been suspended for violating the rules. No specific rule. No explanation. I’m a...

New ask Hacker News story: Commadore64 vs. Nvidia GB10

Commadore64 vs. Nvidia GB10 2 by spottedmarley | 0 comments on Hacker News. One of my first PCs was a C64 (my very first was a TRS80) Today I have a Dell Pro Max GB10 (2, actually) I started thinking about how far tech has come since those days so I asked Grok to try and calculate for me how many C64s would be required to match the processing power of one GB10. Grok's answer: Between 10- and 50-billion C64s (depending on how you compare them, they are not strictly comparable) Anyway, that's quite a 40yr leap!
