Ask HN: I have received a Cease And Desist letter. What to do? 6 by robbiejs | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I am Robbert, creator of JavaScript Excel-like data table library DataGridXL (https://datagridxl.com). I made this component since similar products are quite slow & unreliable. I just released version 2 of the product and decided to add a few "Comparison Pages" to my website, to show visitors why my product is better (when it comes to performance & reliability). Now, the most well known JavaScript Excel-like data table libary has sent me a Cease And Desist Letter by email (twice) demanding that I take this Compare page (https://ift.tt/aKk1mwl) offline. I am not much of a legal rights expert, but so far I have ignored it. I can publish whatever I want, right? Freedom of speech? So far I have just laughed it off and considered it very childish for a 20 person company to try to pressure me into taking this page offline. However, I could use the advice of the H

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How can we pay Ukrainians to work for us?

Ask HN: How can we pay Ukrainians to work for us? 7 by dgreisen | 5 comments on Hacker News. Our US-based non-profit, Open Law Library, would like to offer positions to Ukrainian developers. We would ideally like to pay for services weekly in advance, rather than arrears, to assist with immediate cash flow needs. Does anybody have suggestions on the best way to provide payment? I understand Ukrainian banks are still up for now, so are wire transfers the most reliable, or should we use visa/master card e-gift cards? Something else? Aside from the "who is hiring" posts tomorrow, are there any boards or services we should be posting to? Thank you! David Greisen dgreisen@openlawlib.org

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Anything an ordinary person can do to support civilians in the Ukraine?

Ask HN: Anything an ordinary person can do to support civilians in the Ukraine? 4 by _jae_ | 15 comments on Hacker News. Obviously, whats happening in the Ukraine right now sucks - reading about civilians being killed just leaves me incredibly scared, angry, sad and most of all helpless. It feels hypocritical to me to continue my daily life as before while there is a war going on in Europe. But is there anything that we - 'normal' people - can/should do? Should I donate a part of my income? Any other ideas? Sidenote: I don't want to support Ukrainian government but ordinary civilians. Judging from all I know, Russia are the 'bad guys' but all my information comes from western media so it is likely biased. Thus, I do not want to support any kind of war actions in itself, I rather want to help people that have to suffer from the consequences.

Ask HN: Is there a free Zapier that works with Facebook Leads and TikTok Leads? 3 by somid3 | 1 comments on Hacker News. Zapier is a great tool, but for what it does for Facebook and TikTok leads, the price seems excessive. Is there a free tool (or less expensive) way to capture the form leads from Facebook and TikTok? I feel Zapier has become a swiss-army knife product "to do all things integration" when most marketers just need it to integrate the form leads data. Thank you.

Ask HN: What messaging tool should I use for a local affinity group? 4 by subpixel | 4 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been invited to join a couple dozen non-technical people who live in the same area who have started a group for events and meetups and want a better messaging solution than email. Facebook not an option, I’ve been told. I’m tempted to suggest free Slack, we don’t need a searchable archive that goes back long. But honesty I haven’t tried half of the currently popular messaging tools, and don’t have time to try them all to form an opinion. What do or would you use for this type of thing?

Ask HN: As a long-time unofficial developer, how do I level set for SWE jobs? 3 by throwawaytuary | 0 comments on Hacker News. While my job title is “Actuary”, software development and management have been my bread and butter for a number of years now. I had a hand in creating most of the systems and tools that my team uses today, but lately there have been some obstacles to building cool new things or making quality of life improvements in our existing tools. I also see some career limitations if I keep going down this hybrid path. I’m considering a career change to focus on being a developer or an engineering manager. I think I can find positives to focus on and be happy in either role. I’m not sure which level of jobs I should be applying for though. Telling people that I have 5+ years of professional development experience feels iffy with a resume that isn’t very clean cut. I also assume that I might have some knowledge gaps, but I don’t think I’m a junior either. In 2022, how w

Remind HN: Russian people did not vote for it's government 7 by asats | 1 comments on Hacker News. Ask HN: I don't know text editing shortcuts. Should I learn Vim/Emacs/My IDE? 7 by skwee357 | 4 comments on Hacker News. I live most of the time inside JetBrains IDEs. I occasionally edit random files, mainly in terminal using Vim. I also write a blog (with different tools, mainly Obsidian and Typora). In Firefox and Chrome, I use Vimium for years. Recently, I've realized that I don't really master any editing shortcuts. I'm able to navigate char by char, word by word, end and beginning of the line, as well as selecting text. But nothing more complex. For any complex file editing, I resort to mouse. I know that JetBrains have tons of shortcuts to help with text editing, Vim has its own as well as Emacs. Few years ago, I've switched to 60% keyboard (so my arrow keys are on CapsLock+ijkl) and I feel like my typing speed did increase. I'm looking to make a similar improvement in regards to text editing and I'm wondering what should I invest it. I know that E

Ask HN: How do I help my elderly grandmother remotely? 2 by emptysongglass | 5 comments on Hacker News. My grandmother has a Windows 10 PC that looks like it was set up by Geek Squad. We used the built-in Quick Assist app and while I was in I saw a new browser, "Wave Browser" [1], it looks like snuck into her AppData directory. There's also an anti-virus, Webroot, I believe was installed by Geek Squad, which is now out-of-license. She's called me a few times since, complaining of not remembering her passwords and other small things. I'm worried she's going to have her identity stolen with passwords that are literally her username plus a symbol. How can I best help in 2022? I've looked at Alexa Together [2], which provides everything but remote access. I'm considering getting her to use a password manager but I'm doubtful she'll remember how it works or that her passwords were generated by the built-in password generator if Chrome. Sometimes

Ask HN: Recommended books on blackholes for school-aged? 2 by ffhhj | 0 comments on Hacker News. My little daughter started drawing blackholes and asking about them, whether these are doors to other dimensions, and so on. Tell HN: Use “Verbatim mode” to fix Google search 10 by eof | 2 comments on Hacker News. I, and it seems many others, have noticed a massive decline in quality of google search results. Really frustrating behavior like ignoring quoted strings, giving me results that omit the most important token for my search, etc. I see tons of discussion on this and very few people mentioning the verbatim mode which completely fixes all of this toxic search behavior. Among a tiny, informal survey of my nerdy/developer/tech friends literally none of them knew about this feature. So based on the discussion happening now, and extrapolation, I am assuming most of HN also doesn't know. After you do a search, choose `Tools -> All Results -> Verbatim`. This will give you the behavior that you used to get from google search.
