New ask Hacker News story: I stumbled upon a bug in the Xbox Microsoft wasn't able to solve

I stumbled upon a bug in the Xbox Microsoft wasn't able to solve 3 by atum47 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Back in 2015 I bought my xbox one. I downloaded the preview of the game The Long Dark, the preview was valid for like a day or something. After the preview expired I didn't buy the game. Fast forward to this week and I saw that The Long Dark was available to play with the Game Pass, so I downloaded it. The game didn't played. Said my preview period was over and I have to buy the game to play. You know what?! I've been working long hours lately so I think I deserve. Bought the game. It didn't played, again. Said my preview was over and I should buy the game (even though I just bought). Asked for a refund. Still wanna play the game, so I contact the support. Me and the nice guy from support spent a good 2 hours doing all kinds of stuff to get the game to play, with no success. "Don't worry, the advanced team will be in contact with you and they will fi

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Where do I go to learn more about the lambda calculus?

Ask HN: Where do I go to learn more about the lambda calculus? 2 by mnemonicsloth | 0 comments on Hacker News. Scheme and Haskell are two of my favorite programming languages, and I know both are implementations of the lambda calculus. I'd like to learn more about that, but I haven't been able to find good sources. Most of the time I do find it mentioned, it's mentioned in passing, for example in SICP or the Little Schemer. Some things I'd like to know: - How to construct lambda functions from Turing machines and vice versa - How to think about the Y-combinator (this is now almost un-googleable) - What variants of the lambda calculus have been constructed and what their properties are - How lambda functions relate to functions in the mathematical sense. Are they the same? Can you call them on real numbers? Are they continuous? Etc Extra points if you can recommend a full theoretical treatment. I'm interested in really digging in to this topic.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What will Arm Macs mean?

Ask HN: What will Arm Macs mean? 4 by saltcod | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm trying to get a sense of how significant the transition to Arm will be. The spectrum of possibilities seems extremely wide. Some say it will be a massive performance gain, others say just an incremental jump. The benchmarks of the DTK Mac Minis that leaked this week reveal relatively unimpressive numbers, but of course don't reveal any of the true story — it's a limited machine, it's not the machine that will actually ship in a year's time, it's not even the chip that will ship with that machine etc etc etc. It tells us something, but not much it seems. I'm just trying to get a sense of what the Arm Mac future might look like. When I watch Youtube videos on my current Mini and the fan spins up almost immediately vs on my 3-4 year old iPad where there isn't even a fan, I feel like the performance gain has to be massive, not just incremental. Most people think the transition

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is “No Code” the future of web/app dev?

Ask HN: Is “No Code” the future of web/app dev? 2 by zaksingh | 0 comments on Hacker News. It's been "the future" for 40-ish years now, with dozens (if not hundreds) of failed attempts. At some point, one has to wonder: are we there yet? If not, why aren't we? To me it seems logical that designers should one day be building frontends through visual interfaces that are almost as malleable as tools like Sketch. It seems to me that many features from design programs (like Framer) seek to make design closer to development, and we've even seen a Git for design workflows. So why hasn't it happened yet, and will it ever?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What are modern front ends for RxJS?

Ask HN: What are modern front ends for RxJS? 2 by smrtinsert | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm catching up on React and seeing the changes that have happened recently which include hooks. Needless to say I'm not thrilled. When I was last heavy into frontend, I was excited by cljs atoms and top down virtual dom rendering. I had my front end and backend being rendered by the same codebase. What I'd like to be able to do is render something using RxJS + Typescript. What gui libraries are best to use for that these days? Am I looking at only Bootstrap?

New ask Hacker News story: 2019-20 flu season: 0.02% total excess deaths in Europe

2019-20 flu season: 0.02% total excess deaths in Europe 2 by alejohausner | 2 comments on Hacker News. EuroMOMO tracks mortality statistics from european countries. I went to EuroMOMO.com, and looked at their charts. By adding up the number from 2019 week 40 to 2019 to week 20, which covers the usual flu season, I came up with 100,804 excess deaths. The same period in the 2017-2018 winter season gave me 59,718 excess deaths (the 2018-19 flu season was less deadly). The population of countries that participate in EuroMOMO is 468 million people. This tells me that the excess death rate this flu season was 0.022%, compared to 0.013% for the 2017-2018 season. This was a bad season, but not apocalyptic by any means. Should health agencies take credit for a successful intervention, or is covid-19 just not as deadly as first feared?

Ask HN: Has FOSS Software Won? 2 by foobar_ | 0 comments on Hacker News. Considering the following markets - Embedded / IoT - Server / Web / Cloud - Gaming Console - Mobile - Enterprise Software - Desktop In all the markets except desktop open source software has > 50% market share. If you consider Mac and Chrome OS, Virtual Machine Installs, Desktop reinstalls, people using both Windows and Linux at $work ... I would wager that FOSS Desktop Market share is well over 15%. Based on that would you say FOSS has won ? On a side note would you consider carpentry / IKEA as a model of OSS, where openness is obvious ? Where FOSS has failed IMO is closed computing and closed data. Reducing a general purpose computer to a vendor purpose computer by means of special firmware (the Apple CPU being the new culprit on the block). This also happens on the cloud. This is why Mac or Playstation are still considered closed source as compared to Android which is allows you to install ROMs for the mo

Ask HN: Recommendations for applied engineering and math books for programmers? 2 by dr_kiszonka | 0 comments on Hacker News. I enjoy reading about engineering and math. Unfortunately, I always make simple arithmetic errors, so I never had the courage to take anything beyond calculus and linear algebra in college. (Decades ago, we had to calculate everything by hand.) Over the last few months, I noticed people on HN mentioning books and articles that introduce engineering methods, e.g., control systems, to programmers. This approach works well for me because IDEs and debuggers eagerly notify me about errors in my code. Can you recommend any good self-study books that: - introduce methods and concepts from engineering and math, - show you how to code them, - equip you with just enough intuition to let you apply the methods and to follow more advanced, traditional textbooks? Ideally, the books would: - be applied, - use free software, - not rely on custom packages written by the autho

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why do browsers include developer tools?

Ask HN: Why do browsers include developer tools? 4 by vghaisas | 6 comments on Hacker News. This is a question a friend asked me a few years ago and I never found a satisfactory answer. As a developer, sure, I love the fact that browsers have developer tools included. But how did we get to this state? There must be a story here. The vast majority of browser users aren't going to use the developer tools and aren't even expected to. And it's not like a toolbox included with some furniture because you don't expect the average user to "fix" a web page or build one themselves. Is it just that someone did it and then everyone else thought they might as well do it too? I remember Firebug being more useful than whatever Firefox included, but it still included something iirc? Is it that it's just easier to keep them bundled in than to offer something separately and then deal with add-on problems (permissions, distribution, etc.) Is it that binary size isn't

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Git alternatives that aren't so complicated?

Ask HN: Git alternatives that aren't so complicated? 16 by forgotmypw17 | 26 comments on Hacker News. For the last three years, I've been developing my project strictly on master. And the reason for this is that every time I try branching, within hours or days, something is screwed up, and I don't know how to fix it, and I end up having to reset and redo a bunch of code, if I didn't back it up. This just happened again, even though someone else was holding my hand through the process. At this point, I think I have tried at least 3 times, my minimum for trying something new, and I'm ready to give up on git and try something new, even if it costs me days of learning a new system. Is there anything you would suggest to someone like me?

If you are a freelancer or the owner of an online business who is not based in one of the countries supported by PayPal & Stripe, then you must have experienced how challenging it may be to receive payments in exchange for products and services. Ask HN: How does one have the mindset to study for coding interviews? 2 by lowiqengineer | 5 comments on Hacker News. I'm considering starting a new job hunt, but I'm out of practice. Unlike most folks, I still haven't gotten into competitive companies after doing ~250 or so problems (perhaps because of my aforementioned IQ leading to an inability to problem solve), and I'm not interested in companies that do alternatives to coding interviews as they generally pay significantly worse than what I'm expecting, but whenever I do Leetcode problems I frequently dive into the depths of depression and self-harm because I often can't do Medium problems. I've done CTCI, but that isn't as effective in the market now. I'm genuinely concerned I might harm myself further if I attempt more study, but at the same time, I need to fix my compensation trajectory or else I'll be in the same boat later. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Switching schools to Georgia Tech worth it?

Ask HN: Switching schools to Georgia Tech worth it? 3 by paat | 3 comments on Hacker News. I am considering leaving my current Masters of CS program at a lower ranking school to attend GT OMSCS. How important is a degree from a top CS school in regards to getting a job at a FAANG company? Should I just stay at my current school and practice leetcode every day until I graduate instead? My bachelors and work experience are not relevant.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Learn Python coming from C# background

Ask HN: Learn Python coming from C# background 2 by humanlion87 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I have been coding in C#/.NET for the past few years. Am interested in dabbling in some AI/ML, especially applications related to healthcare and biology. Based on some quick research, it seems like I need to get familiar with Python before I dive into the actual ML stuff. I have never used Python before. There are innumerable resources on the web for learning Python and I am finding it hard to figure out which might be best. So I thought I would turn to the experienced HN crowd to get some feedback :). Any suggestions on material for the best way to get familiar with Python for a C# developer? Thanks

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Alternative to Google play music once they close?

Ask HN: Alternative to Google play music once they close? 3 by matt_the_bass | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been using google play music for about 6 years. It’s a convenient way for me to access all my music (mostly ripped CDs). Google is shutting down this product at the end of the year. Any suggestions for an alternative? I like being able to access my own collection and not crazy about paying a second time to access music I already bought. But if I am going to pay for a service, which one?

New ask Hacker News story: Let's use more of Firefox, only YOU can stop Chrome from becoming the next IE

Let's use more of Firefox, only YOU can stop Chrome from becoming the next IE 9 by smart_jackal | 4 comments on Hacker News. For those who don't know (or belong to a newer generation), Microsoft's IE (Internet Explorer) was one browser that had almost monopolized itself globally for many years mostly during the early nineties decade. They managed to do it but the backlash was such that the public pressure practically caused a storm that made Bill Gates sit in front of the jury and answer some hard questions. And today, I'm seeing history is repeating all over again, only Chrome has taken IE's place but there is no storm coming this time. Unlike our predecessors, we are giving in to convenience, we are acting like its not a botheration at all. PLEASE DON'T DO IT . Consider the sheer browser market share that Chrome enjoys and Google's data interests for a moment, and it might already be too late for us. If a web service insists only on Chrome for best perf

New ask Hacker News story: I don't use PureScript because xyz. Change my mind

I don't use PureScript because xyz. Change my mind 2 by elramon | 1 comments on Hacker News. I don't use purescript because: - lack of good documentation and/or examples (most of the times the only documentation a dev has are types and you can't expect that everyone will understand it) - error messages are not really friendly to read most of the times - lack of css libraries, which are very important if you can't write your own css library. There are some wrapper around Material UI made with purescript but most of there are outdated. The only way you have to customize your UI is by hand - lot of times you have the impression that you are doing a lot to get little in return - if you leaves the types to the compiler you end up with we a lot of weird type everywhere Please help me change my mind because I really like purescript as a language and I think it have lots of potential
