Ask HN: OK to restart an app abandoned by it's founders? 3 by bizgrayson | 7 comments on Hacker News. An app I thought was a great idea shut down more than 3 years ago. I recently had the idea to bring it back, and found the domain was available, so I bought it. I also found the trademark marked ABANDONED/DEAD. The company raised a small round of funding, and was popular for about a year in certain Twitter circles. It likely has some brand recognition among those in the startup crowd. I've tried to reach the founders and others on the original team multiple times via multiple methods, to no response. I'd prefer to get their consent - but interested to hear whether you think it'd be OK to just go ahead and reopen the site?

Thought I'd check how far Unity has come, but I'm experiencing crashes trying to use the DOT framework and the new renderers, with 2019 stable and 2020 beta versions of the app. I'm wondering if the Mac build is maybe used by a less professional segment, or does it just require a careful combination of dependencies? It seems it should be possible to ship a simple platformer / 2D game with it, but I don't wish to commit to using an unstable editor.

Awful Amazon Interview Experince 4 by amir734jj | 0 comments on Hacker News. I just wanted to share my recent experience interviewing with Amazon. I hope it helps everyone. About myself: I am a Ph.D. candidate in computer science, work at a financial company as a senior engineer, and teaching part-time at my university courses such as compiler, algorithm and data structures. I live in the midwest, USA. I love doing interviews and solving algorithm questions. Background: I interviewed at Palo Alto, CA office about a year ago and although it went well and I answered all the questions I was told: "this position wasn't a best fit for me" ... A few weeks ago I was reached out by an Amazon recruiter about an opportunity in the Seattle area and I was told the previous recruiter did not find a best match for me and she apologized for wasting my time. She said they would like to do a another round of interviews. As I love challenging myself, I said yes and I did a screening whi

Ask HN: I’m already fluent in English. How can I improve further? 2 by matanrubin | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been reading, writing and speaking English as a second language ever since I was a kid. I can conduct hour-long conversations at work or when on holiday with native speakers without getting tired or feeling strained. I give presentations, tell jokes and would sometimes even speak in English because I find it easier to express my current thought in it. And yet it doesn’t feel like a mother tongue. I still feel some sentences are direct translations of the way I would say something in Hebrew, and that a native speaker would have said it differently. I’m also aware of my grammar not being perfect. Knowing which preposition to use is sometimes challenging. So, how do I improve my English further? What’s the next step after reaching this level? Obviously online classes wouldn’t do. The only option I could think of is living in an English speaking country, but that currently

Cheap Treatment for Covid-19 with MethyleneBlue that might be rejected by pharma 3 by rahulgolwalkar | 0 comments on Hacker News. He has written a blog of how to treat is with the really cheap drug/dye which is easily available in every drug store over the counter - https://ift.tt/2Sioiao My guess, that the reason that Methylene Blue(MB) is not a mainstream drug for COVID-19 cause it has several positive effects with not just lung diseases but many others; as well as MB(Methylene Blue) is easily and cheaply available everywhere. Which is a huge loss for the pharma industry! Here are 5 of the reports of Methylene Blue showing really good results -

New ask Hacker News story: Why do governments favor bailout of companies rather than issuing new shares?

Why do governments favor bailout of companies rather than issuing new shares? 2 by DamienSF | 1 comments on Hacker News. Isn't the public market supposed to offer public companies a way to recapitalize whenever they need it? In recent years public companies have been spending huge amounts of cash buying back their own shares. Wouldn't a functioning economy/financial system promote the issuance of new shares as the main mechanism to raise cash? It's obvious why public companies would prefer a bailout than issuing new shares but why government acting in the interest of its constituents would be so prompt to bail out public companies rather than having them raise cash through the public market? At the minimum wouldn't it be sound to condition a bailout amount to a fraction of cash raised through the market? Is there a way to explain this other than incompetence or corruption?

I've written my own in JavaScript, Python, PowerShell, and I've used Microsoft Power BI/Power Query, but they are slow, don't work well, require custom code, etc. I need to: 1. call REST APIs (with Authorization HTTP header) and get JSON (arrays of objects), also parent-child endpoints (parent has IDs of child objects) -- nested loops 2. paginate using the Link HTTP response header, observe rate limits (HTTP response headers, to avoid 429 errors) and concurrency limits 3. (nice to have) select certain fields from the JSON object; also, data can be "L-shaped" (not every record has the same fields) 4. export to CSV Open source, cross-platform would be good. Needs to be easy for not-very-technical end users to use.

I posted this recently - https://ift.tt/2VXIZts Also, there a model which Trump is following that predicts 80k American lives will fall by August 2020 to COVID-19, which is turning out to be prophetic. Are there other COVID-19 simulation models which have turned out to be presciently accurate?

Ask HN: What is the easiest way to get a PhD? 2 by Raed667 | 0 comments on Hacker News. As a hypothetical exercise. You want to add a "Dr." to your email signature, and you have $10K to spare. What would be the easiest (in terms of effort and time) way to get a PhD that is somewhat legit (no diploma mill or fake university)? The field or subject doesn't really matter.

New ask Hacker News story: Coronavirus testing using binary search method

Coronavirus testing using binary search method 2 by SailingSperm | 0 comments on Hacker News. Would getting fluid samples from 2 groups of say 50 people, combining the samples and testing that, then keep halving and testing recursively the groups that return positive, be a viable way of testing large sums of people with far fewer tests than individual person by person tests. I'm not very familiar with all the tests run, but surely something like this could be applied to the antibody one? Would love to hear if anyone with more knowledge of the testing process and capabilities could give their thoughts...

Tell HN: If you are Australian, don't use CovidSafe it's not fully open source 2 by andrewstuart | 2 comments on Hacker News. The government is expecting people to trust its track and trace software but it is not fully open source. Which is strange because the best chance of fixing any vulnerabilities is to make it fully open source. Until the government fully open sources it, definitely don't use it.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Telescope as a Window to Our Past

Ask HN: Telescope as a Window to Our Past 2 by ram1981 | 2 comments on Hacker News. This is for the physics nerds out there. If Hubble telescope can see a past event of a distant planet, can the earth’s past be seen by a Hubble telescope placed in a distant planet? The answer is most likely yes. So my follow up. What if there is a mirror like object on that planet that reflected the light back onto earth? Can Hubble then become a window to our past? And can we essentially manoeuvre Hubble to pick up past events “live”? It’s almost like having a drone above us but feeding us images from the past. Sorry about the long question :(

Ask HN: What does it mean/take to be a good engineering manager? 4 by satyajith | 3 comments on Hacker News. I recently got rejected by a FAANG company for the role of an engineering manager. My hunch is that my lack of people management experience comes through (but who knows). My current title is “Director” in a traditional retail company (not a tech or engineering-first company). Despite the seniority I have had zero direct reports in my career. I have “managed” consultants throughout my career which has mostly meant assigning tasks, talking through designs with them, conducting occasional 1:1s, providing feedback and conveying appreciation on a job well done, providing business context around a project or in general, with little to no control over their career growth and development. The feedback I have received is positive - “feel supported”, “has a calming effect on the team during high-pressure/stress situations”, “always willing to provide detailed technical and business inf

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Best Free Python Editor?

Ask HN: Best Free Python Editor? 3 by brundolf | 1 comments on Hacker News. I recently started working in Python and reached straight for VSCode, because it's been so great for other languages. But its Python plugin is... extremely underwhelming. MyPy/Pylint checks don't run until you save, take several seconds, and don't even place the underlines in the right place; they all end up at the start of the line. Autocomplete support is minimal. I know PyCharm exists, but is there a free editor that does a better job?

Ask HN: What is the worst thing about Google search? 2 by firatcan | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone, I hate google search when I am using it for learning a subject. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What is the desktop security model?

Ask HN: What is the desktop security model? 2 by fitzn | 0 comments on Hacker News. For some reason I have been thinking a lot about the "desktop security model" lately in comparison to the browser security model. What stops spotify, or chrome, or any other desktop app that I install from reading my .ssh directory? I assume nothing, by default, since it's under the same user. Is there a long history or book about this subject that I don't know of? Is there a way to restrict disk access of an application by directory? Obviously, I understand how things have evolved from the early days of assuming installed software was benign. I'm not complaining, or shaming, or whatever, that developers didn't think of the threat model for desktop apps back then as we might if the concept of desktop apps came out today. I am mostly just wondering if this problem has already been discussed and if there is a canonical approach to it. To give you a sense of why I think this is
