New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is a non-profit selling at cost drugs using True Pill possible?

Ask HN: Is a non-profit selling at cost drugs using True Pill possible? 2 by samemail88 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm interested in starting website similar to Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs. From what I've gather, his website sells drugs with a 15% markup and shipping. The actual drugs are white labeled and shipped by True Pill. His site mainly does the marketing and maintains the customer relationship. I want to launch a similar venture but sell the drugs at cost (no mark up). This would be a non-profit with the goal of helping people reduce their drug cost. I applied to True Pill to get access to their API but I don't get any response from them. I've tried calling their 800 number but it tells me to send an email to their sales/support email address. Does True Pill only work with large, established players? Does anybody work for True Pill that can help?

Ask HN: Who Is Jamstack Aimed At? 2 by aosaigh | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've recently taken on my first project that's fully "Jamstack" [1] and I'm finding it very hard to understand who exactly these statically generated sites builders are aimed at? The project is using Gatsby Cloud and Contentful. The key problems they have encountered are a) build times being painfully slow (+5 minutes per content change) and therefore b) the authoring/publishing experience is really poor as you can't easily see previews. These seem to be common complaints of static site generators (I'm also skipping over the general complexity required to get a website up and running with so many moving parts) In order to tackle this problem, Gatsby offers a rendering feature called "DSG" (Deferred Static Generation) [2]. When enabled, instead of building all of your content up-front (the entire point of a statically generated site), only your core pages are generated

Keeping your team on the same page when they work from anywhere 2 by runwai | 2 comments on Hacker News. I was the sole remote member of my team years ago when remote was "a very special arrangement." These days my team is 100% remote. I remember how painful it was for me to stay up at 1:30AM for a meeting, so I don't ask it from other people. I also won't produce extra hours at the end of the day to watch recordings, so I don't tell others to "just watch the recording" either. As company founder and manager of a great team of responsible people, I need my team looped in with information they need to do their jobs, whether or not they make it to a call. Conversely, I also expect them to keep on top of their action items , whether or not they make it to a call. Enter Neo, our trusty AI teammate, whom we count on to keep ourselves in the loop, whatever time zone or schedule we have that week. He documents action items automatically, breaks out conversat

Ask HN: What is your development strategy? 2 by thowerawayer | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN, what is your development strategy? I am a relatively experienced hobby developer who recently joined the workforce. In one of my recent projects, which as a small solo project, I noticed that I was not putting in my best effort when it came to the quality of my code and work. I was so focused on the hand-off that I forgot some parts of the main feature, which ended up not working. My question is: how can I prevent this from happening again? Do you use lists or mental models to remember the main objectives? And how do you assess your own work to ensure that you didn't miss anything?

Ask HN: As an URM where are the hand out jobs people mention all the time here 3 by trwayurm | 15 comments on Hacker News. Not trying to bait, I've lurked here enough and I'm trying to have a good faith discussion. As an URM who grew up in what would be considered the hood and went on to get a non-CS STEM degree (think eng/math/phys/chem,which is where my programming experience comes from) where are these jobs that people mention in anecdotal stories that URM are handed despite not being qualified? For all the diversity companies seem to signal, and everyone seems to complain about people being given jobs unfairly, my job search has not reflected that. Might be despite my STEM degree I'm not good enough, but the lack of interviews I'm landing means I'm being filtered out from the start. The way people make it out to be here, those jobs are handed out. So are companies BSing? HN comments BSing? or who is getting these URM jobs? Does anyone have any advice or willi

Ask HN: How can I make Mail/Messages links open in Incognito by default? 6 by gnicholas | 3 comments on Hacker News. Whenever I click a link on my computer (e.g, from email or Messages), it opens by default in my browser of choice, but never in an Incognito window. Nearly 100% of the time, I want it to open in Incognito, which I use whenever I'm visiting a site that I don't need to be logged into. My current workaround is to right-click the link, copy link, switch to my browser, open a new Incognito window, paste in the link and hit return. While this doesn't seem like that big a deal, it's actually a lot of clicks (11 key presses) — compared to just one click to open a link normally. Additionally, it puts the pasted link into my pasteboard manager, which is unnecessary and annoying when I go to retrieve a snippet that is now further down in the stack. What's the best way to handle this? I've considered switching my default browser to a different browser that

Ask HN: Who has ditched their phone and what is your replacement? 12 by assemblylang | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN, who here doesn't use a phone and what do you use as a replacement? I've been using my phone less and less these days, and it feels like a chore to use a modern phone now. Touch interface is slow and imprecise, apps and webapps are slow, bloated, and keep removing useful features, adblock on some systems are clunky or non-existent, VoIP and SMS are basically dead, the interface changes nearly every year (on android at least), and many other small grievances. I can get things done so much quicker on a computer with a keyboard compared to the touch interface on a phone, using a keyboard and a full desktop environment is so precise, quick, and just enjoyable to use. However, I am still hanging onto my phone for a few legacy uses, what are some good replacements for these: * Mobile wifi * VoIP * SMS Also, I am still interested in mobile computing as a concep

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Where to Read Proofs?

Ask HN: Where to Read Proofs? 7 by tines | 7 comments on Hacker News. I'm attempting to self-study mathematics, and I'm having a very hard time with proofs. My formal maths education goes up to calculus II. I've never taken linear algebra, for example, and trying to learn it with a textbook like Linear Algebra Done Right is very difficult. I have a terrible time even making it through the first set of exercises once proofs come into the picture. I've heard many many times that you can only learn math by doing it, which is certainly true, and is akin to saying that you can only learn a language by attempting to speak it. But to begin to learn to speak well, one must hear tons and tons of speech. Similarly, to begin to learn to write well, one must read tons and tons of writings. Are there any resources for people who just want to read proofs? Preferably well-commented ones suited for beginners like myself who are trying more to get a feel for proof as an activity rath

Ask HN: Any viable alternatives to Google News? 7 by metadat | 3 comments on Hacker News. I hate how unclear the degree of echo chamber is with Google News. It also keeps showing me the same articles for days or weeks after I've already seen and read them. Are ther any real contenders out there? Ideally it'd aggregate all news across the globe and let me browse by region, perhaps with automatic translation for non-english articles. The idea of a global, non country-centric front page is highly appealing to me (I want to deprogram myself from the western slant, it possible).

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Learning to Have Tough Conversations

Ask HN: Learning to Have Tough Conversations 2 by vkurjsnnw | 1 comments on Hacker News. I think I’m generally a good conversationalist and speaker, but I’m terrible when it comes to really tough conversations both professionally and in personal life. I’ve always struggled terribly to break off unhealthy relationships or tell employees that they need to get their act together. Whenever I have to do have a tough conversation like that, I end up wanting to downplay things and finish the conversation more positively. I’ve read lots of general advice on this and know that dragging/downplaying things is usually worse for the receiver as well, but I haven’t been able to get better. How do I learn to have tough conversations?

Ask HN: How do you future-proof yourself? 6 by behnamoh | 8 comments on Hacker News. Been using proprietary OSs (Windows, macOS) and I think fundamentally they're rock solid. But I also fear the day that Apple and MS either go bankrupt or just stop supporting their OSs. It happens all the time at a smaller scale, like, each version of macOS breaks some features/apps that I'm used to, and MS stops supporting Windows versions after a few years. I always thought Linux would be the most future-proof OS, but choosing something like Fedora entails the same problems as above (something being maintained by a corporation), and other distros seem too distracted that I don't know if most of them will be around in a few years anyway. Same thing with my tools. Atom was dropped in favor of VSC and Zed, despite having millions of users. Again, it seems something like Vim or Emacs would be the most future-proof alternative. Sure, VSCode is supposedly open-source, but I don't think p

Ask HN: How on earth are you using your Apple computer with external displays? 19 by n42 | 19 comments on Hacker News. I also have had in that timespan three different Windows desktops that I have built and a ThinkPad running Windows or Linux depending on the mood. I have spent countless dollars on cables and adapters in an attempt to find the magic combination. I have read DisplayPort specs, I know every brand of certified cable. I now know way more than I would ever care to know about DisplayPort and HDMI protocols. I have tried 4 different brands and models of monitor. For one of those models, I had three of the exact same model. All combinations work flawlessly with anything that is not one of the Apple devices. I have all but eliminated any of these components being the problem. Depending on the device and the day I will get: - Visual artif

Ask HN: Getting a Handle on Debt 2 by iJohnDoe | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi Everyone, I have around 100k in debt. It’s various credit cards or small loans with the usual companies we all get junk mail from. My credit is fine, other than just the high balances bringing the score down. Doing a refi or HELOC isn’t an option. My specific questions: Has anyone been through this and figured out a way to consolidate? Anyone find a loan company that is willing to consolidate, even if it’s a high interest rate? I’m basically treading water and not making a dent at anything. Consolidating and getting it somewhat more manageable would help. Haven't had any luck with LendingTree, SoFi, etc. despite their advertisements. I could give them a try again though. Anyone have luck negotiating down balances? Looking for a company that understands the situation and not just running a credit report and denying it. Ask HN: Autocurrying Syntax Sugar? 2 by danhab99 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Full disclosure: I'm not a computer scientist, I'm just a programmer who uses these tools. Also I mainly use javascript and go, I need to spread out more but these two tools fulfill 99% of all my needs. I had a 2am idea and when I looked it up I couldn't find any mention of someone else thinking of it. Here it is: Function currying is a method for saving arguments on the callstack so they don't have to be copied in memory between calls. Here's a javascript example of currying: ```js const add = (leftOp) => (rightOp) => leftOp + rightOp; const addThree = add(3); console.log(addThree(4)); // 7 console.log(addThree(-2)); // 1 ``` I think all PL that support the "putting-functions-in-variables" paradime can do this. BUT. If you try to call a normal function that requires all of its arguments up front without all the arguments it will throw an error. So what if it didn't?

Ask HN: E2E Encrypted Period Trackers? 7 by krinn_silver | 7 comments on Hacker News. One sentiment from the recent Roe v Wade decision is that women should be careful about their data as law enforcement could use it to determine if they had an abortion. Period tracker apps are quite popular, and even a form of contraception [1]. They technically don't need to access the data (although they may wish to for analytics/monetisation), so it seems to me like a perfect candidate for E2E encryption. But I can't find any that advertise they use E2E encryption (just a vague "we encrypt your data" in their privacy statement). Is anyone working on this? So far, I enjoy it a lot and I'm doing well. I think I'd like to continue for a PhD, and see what lies beyond that. My problems are twofold. One is age. I don't think I'm too old to get into a PhD program, but by the time I would complete one, I'll be, best-case scenario, in my mid-40s. I don't think should matter at all, because what matters is how many productive years a person has left--a highly variable unknown, with a median low enough that my age is a complete non-issue--but, of course, I don't control perceptions. There is a possibility that getting a PhD will only make me more overqualified and unemployab

Ask HN: If you could talk to a database in plain English, would you? 4 by brochington | 9 comments on Hacker News. For the past 6 months I’ve been working on a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) API. Essentially the request would contain a plain english sentence, and the response would include a breakdown of actions, entities, agents, location, temporal, logic, etc. My hope was that I could create a “Stripe/Twilio for NLU”, but recent feedback has been that it’s more a “technology”, and less a “product”. It would still require a lot of development work to create anything of value for an end user. While I see the value of an API, I also agree with their sentiment, and so I’ve begun exploring problems to apply my API to. One use case that tends to pop up frequently is “text-to-database”. Similar to text-to-SQL, but with my API I could target any DB regardless of query language. This would require a large amount of work, and I’m not convinced that it’s something that users even want.

I’m hesitant to suggest something like Discourse because of the unfamiliar UX. Same thing for FB Groups. Email is ubiquitous, so that’s where we have to start.

It's like legos for me, and I build a bunch of projects using various technologies so I keep learning some new frameworks and languages. I feel good working on all sorts of applications, from backend to web and mobile apps. Unfortunately I tried to do some mock interviews (leetcode) and got demolished. I have been practicing for the last couple of months, but I just cannot solve a single medium problem on my own without looking at some help and even then it is hard for me. I think that I'm hitting my limits because I'm finding that I am not that good at actually "programming". I have a hard time thinking about some of these problems, because I can't comprehend the question itself. I can build UI

Ask HN: How to develop React+Flask locally in a way that can easily be deployed? 3 by RSchaeffer | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm a newcomer to fullstack development with no experience in infra. I want to make a web app based on a React frontend and Flask backend (with a Postgres database). What are people's recommendations for developing locally, in a way that can be easily & immediately deployed? A lot of the tutorials I can find either (a) don't mention deployment, or (b) treat it like a final step at the end, rather than something that needs to be done on a semi-frequent basis.

Ask HN: What would you do if given a sabbatical? 6 by linsomniac | 2 comments on Hacker News. In academia it is more common to give a year for every 7 worked, to take time off work to do something of your choosing that ultimately enhances your employer in some way. Say, writing a book. If your employer offered you a sabbatical, what would you do with yourself? I work in operations, I'd want something like 3 months to experiment with some ideas related to the software release cycle: version control, building, testing, releasing, and deploying a complex application (~50 packages, 20 clusters, 5 environments).

The vibe I'm going for is pitches that left you with a clear "before" and "after" division in your life where you not only "got it" but also keep referring to it from that point onward. Obvious candidate for example is DHH's 15 minute Rails demo (and i've been told the Elixir Liveview demo is similar) and Solomon Hykes' Docker demo. What other pitch is like that? Triplebyte (YC S15) is a tech recruiting company that operates by getting developers to take skill tests, and then using the results to match them with employers. Back in 2020, they got in a lot of hot water by suddenly announcing that user profiles -- which had been collected with assurances that the data wouldn't be shared without consent -- would be made public, unless you opted out within a week[1]. This provoked a lot of backlash, especially since the CEO seemed totally oblivious to the privacy concerns[2]. After a lot of angry comments, he publicly apologized and reversed course[3]. Then in 2021, some users started once again being notified that their profiles were automatically being made public[4]. This time, it was explained away as an "oversight" related to the fact that previously, opt-outs weren't permanent but had a hidden expira

Ask HN: Which programming language for a first-time coder in 2022? 8 by headmelted | 20 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been asked recently by a buddy who’s kid (13) wants to learn programming but isn’t sure where is best to start. My gut feeling is something like Python might make the most sense, but wanted to ask the room. Criteria I’m working on are: 1) Ease to get to “Hello World”. 2) Kid-friendly, easily available learning resources. 3) Low setup complexity. It’s been so long since I’ve been there (VB6!) that it’s harder to know in 2022 what the right advice to give is for someone just starting out. I also thought about steering them to HTML first, but I don’t think the open web as the same excitement factor for someone starting out in 2022 that it did for me back in the day (which is a shame). What do you folks think?

Could you recommend me a light web-stack for my web app? 4 by laxmymow | 5 comments on Hacker News. I'm making a small free web app in Django with bootstrap for frontend for small-size farmers to exchange services in between each others, the app will have no more then a 1000 users. Along the way i stumbled with a lot of problems: * phone version * chat in with selected groups of users * deployment and security I tried making it in django-rest with vue or using uvicorn and django-chat and even implementing my own chat system but it complicated the whole project a whole lot. Is something like firebase or aws lambda with preact or petite-vue with ionic(for phone version) better for these kind of small apps ? I'm looking for a different web framework that will have all these things included with minimal code required. I just would like to get it shipped as fast as possible. Do you have any suggestions ? Thanks in advance

Ask HN: How to get street name onto Google Maps? 2 by tnjm | 0 comments on Hacker News. The road on which our house in rural France sits finally got a name two years ago. But still no-one can find us because Google Maps hasn't added it. UPS delivers parcels to an access point 10km away, and doesn't tell us. Other couriers leave our parcels randomly at a similarly named street hundreds of yards away. I've submitted the name through the Android app multiple times, including attaching a geotagged photo of the street sign, but no dice. My addition of the name for an adjacent street that was also missing was accepted within 24 hours, first attempt. I've submitted the new name to OpenStreetMap successfully. Is there anything else I can do? And why are they incapable of correctly evaluating contributions that match up with the official cadastral map?

This isn't really about her case. In the UK, the NHS offer breast cancer screening every 3 years for women from the age of 50 until they turn 71. It's done via a fragmented set of regional IT systems that have evolved since the 80s with algorithms that are poorly understood by those using them let alone patients. And separate screening programmes for those with higher genetic risk, who've previously had breast cancer, trials looking at expanding the age range, etc. Mum moved house a few years ago, told her local GP (primary care physician?) practice that she was
