New ask Hacker News story: 24-cells in a 600-cell

24-cells in a 600-cell 2 by johncarlosbaez | 0 comments on Hacker News. The 24-cell is a four-dimensional regular polytope with 24 vertices and 24 octahedral faces. The 600-cell is a four-dimensional regular polytope with 120 vertices and 600 tetrahedral faces. Since 120/24 = 5, you might hope that there’s a way to partition the 600-cell’s vertices into the vertices of five 24-cells. And there is! A new paper by some high school students shows what we've long believed: there are exactly 10 ways. In fact, they show there are 25 ways to choose some of the vertices of the 600-cell to be the vertices of a 24-cell. These 25 ways can listed in a 5×5 array, so that each row and each column gives one way to partition the 600-cell’s vertices into the vertices of five 24-cells. Ask HN: Why are drawing tablets so expensive? 2 by sigmaprimus | 0 comments on Hacker News. I had a Christmas present request for one and was shocked to see how expensive they are. Is it just because it is a niche product? Or is there some sort of special hardware that makes them different from regular tablets? Do these tablets somehow make people draw better?

I want to get back into blockchain dev with some kind of course or certification on my CV. Are there any widely recognised organisations that might provide these? Ask HN: How to get focused and calm myself before an interview with investors? 2 by melonbar | 0 comments on Hacker News. So I have been involved in a new startup that has been fortunate enough to land some interviews this past week. We pivoted an MVP and landed customers within a month which was really exciting and it helped us land so some meetings with huge potential. Queue my social anxiety. I tend to ramble and that can lead to me being a bit defensive. I am just curious how others deal with accelerator or VC meetings and more specifically the rapid fire questioning. I love what I do and spend my time trying to ensure our customers are as happy as they can be. I just don’t want to get flustered and ruin things for my partners, if that makes sense. We try not to mock interviews or focus too much on our couple competitors but instead find what our customers want. Thank you so much for making it this far, I greatly appreciate any and all advice.

Ask HN: Crashed founders, what was the point of failure? 2 by jlbnjmn | 0 comments on Hacker News. The recent PG essay on thinking received a lot of comments about survivor bias. It seems the value of survivor bias awareness is realizing the need to compare crashed planes to the survivors. There's clearly potential for mismatched incentives when VCs are talking to potential founders, just like there's a mismatched incentive for armchair analysts to justify their inaction. So, founders who went for it and failed enough to quit, what happened? What was the actual point of failure?

Ask HN: Co-workers paid more. What to do? 5 by adit20 | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hi all, I am in early 40's. Individual contributor in tech role. Recently I got to know, there is a huge discrepancy in the compensation. A lot of co-workers ( including juniors) are getting paid more than I do. I am not getting promoted too. My performance has been very good. I have always got high ratings. But I never discussed compensation related things with my manager. Only those who make noise are getting rewarded. I can say, I am financially independent. Even if I get a promotion, it wont make any significant difference to my net worth. But others (many undeserving ones) making more than me hurts me. How do I handle this situation?

Survey for my fellow SaaS startups 2 by Dionneo | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey guys, I'm new to this community and have never done a startup before. Recently, I had a problem of collecting user feedback from my enterprise clients. The non-technical clients had a hard time communicating their concern's / wants and I had to be physically present at their office to get them to explain the problem to me effectively. This is a problem which I felt that most startups would face(Or maybe not..). The concept of my solution is simple, give users the ability to visually tell the developers what the problem on the app is (via screen recording and click captures), contextualize the problem and organize it for developers to understand the issue effectively. Of course, there are other solutions out there like Bugherd and UserSnap, but I feel that I can still bring value to the table. That being said, thank you for reading thus far. I'm currently trying dig deeper into the problem an

Encyclopedias, podcasts, videos, ... even museums could be good pointers. I realize the question may be too broad but the point is to increase exposure to technologies.

I have $1M cash in my bank – how can I stretch it so I can retire & live off it? 17 by archeantus | 24 comments on Hacker News. I’ve worked hard in the tech industry for the last eight years and have saved up a nest egg. In addition to that I recently sold my house which means I literally have $1M in my bank account right now. For so many on here that is not too much money, but for me and my bg, I feel more fortunate than I ever could have dreamed of being. I like my job, but it’s stressful. My dream is to use this nest egg to make investments that will grow the capital and allow me to live off of it. Am I jumping the gun? Is $1M not enough? I’m sure I could get way more money if I endure more years of my job, but I so want a break. What are the chances of taking $1M and investing so that I don’t have to work anymore?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Did you have early career doubts?

Ask HN: Did you have early career doubts? 4 by throw-away-ec | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm not a bad developer, but to be honest, programming was never my passion. I took CS after high-school for pragmatic reasons. I spent 5 years in school, got several degrees including an MSc in Computer Science. And I have been working professionally as a developer / "software engineer" (big air-quotes) for the past 5 years. I'm in my (very) late 20s and I can't imagine doing this for the rest of my life. But the only other path seems to be management right now. And that sounds even worse. I feel like I'm stuck on this path, and stepping out would mean financial ruin. I'm based in Europe, so my salary has been pretty modest. Is this a regular 30s-life-crises? Did you have similar doubts at this point of your career/life? What did you do?

Ask HN: Burned Out Data Scientist – Switching to Back End SWE? 3 by wltrmcq | 1 comments on Hacker News. I am a burned out data scientist in a data "head" role at a startup. At this point I have management experience and am at mid-career - I have been doing the data thing for a decade. I can't do it anymore, I can't stand cleaning or working with dirty data on a daily basis. I am sick of managing expectations about DS work with managers who just want models and results when they're not tenable. I have started to learn how to write back end code e.g. web services, APIs, working with Apache Kafka, and have found that working on these types of projects brings me joy. I am worried that companies will look at me as a very odd choice for hiring because of this career switch. Has anybody else gone from DS to more vanilla SWE? If so, what was your experience doing so? Any advice? Thanks.

Ask HN: Are there good reasons to not open-source voting machine software 3 by ferros | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi all, I wish to keep this apolitical and focus strictly on the technology from our perspective as developers/technologists. If voting software and machines were government owned and they wished to open source the software for the sake of transparency - would there be any good reason not to do this? There would no doubt be some benefits to making the code publicly accessible, a lot of which we see from the open source world already. Are there any risks that would outweigh some of the benefits of open-sourcing or making code visible? I’m trying to counterbalance the argument for open source code.

Ask HN: How do I learn mathematics starting from almost no knowledge? 3 by Man_On_the_Moon | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hi all - In high school, I pretty much ignored math. I memorized everything without understanding anything. I got through AP calculus (and got a 5 on the exam but I honestly didn't really understand any of it). I didn't take any math in college. I can't help but feel like I missed out on great beauty. I was looking at an explanation of one of Euclid's proofs and this made me want to take action. I have almost none of the building blocks. Can anyone refer me to a book that starts from the very building blocks of math (I assume things like prime numbers) and the simplest logic and builds off these first principles to create understanding? I understand this probably doesn't exist, but is there anything close?
