Tell HN: Adblock rules to hide HN posts about Twitter & Musk 8 by xvello | 3 comments on Hacker News. For those who want some relief from the Twitter/Musk drama, here are three cosmetic filters to add to your custom uBlockOrigin / AdGuard rules: news.ycombinator.com##tr.athing span.titleline > a:has-text(/\bTwitter\b/):upward(tr):remove() news.ycombinator.com##tr.athing span.titleline > a:has-text(/\bMusk\b/):upward(tr):remove() news.ycombinator.com##tr.spacer + tr:not(.athing):remove() The first two ones remove the post title if it contains Twitter and/or Musk. The third one removes the second line and the spacer. I also hide some machine learning topics with these rules: news.ycombinator.com##tr.athing span.titleline > a:has-text(/\bstable\Wdiffusion\b/i):upward(tr):remove() news.ycombinator.com##tr.athing span.titleline > a:has-text(/\bdall-e\b/i):upward(tr):remove() I'll probably make that a configurable template for https://letsblock.it/ soon

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Hacker News for Non-Software Engineers

Ask HN: Hacker News for Non-Software Engineers 5 by elil17 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! While I love the culture and many of the articles, HN is not as relevant as I wish it was to my day-to-day job and interests. As a mechanical engineer/engineering generalist, I wish there was a version of HN that focused more on every type of engineering that's not software engineering. I wish I could find the blog posts about how to get the most out of a factory visit, the journal articles about new materials, and the latest startups that hire people with my skillset. I'm not looking for Q&A or help forums (there are lots of good ones for that).

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is the Firebase Auth Secure?

Ask HN: Is the Firebase Auth Secure? 2 by WolfOliver | 0 comments on Hacker News. According to the documentation, I can obtain the firebase "API" token via the following javascript (see [01]): FirebaseAuth.instance.currentUser().getIdToken(); It seems like the id token is used as access token/api key? As there are so many discussions that storing tokens in a palace reachable by JS is very insecure [02]. I'm wondering what I'm missing here. Also, I do not really understand why is it considered to be so much more insecure? As soon as malicious code has access to the JS, he can as well make the fetch requests from the users browsers, sending along all the required cookies. So, is it still valid not to use local storage for tokens? [01] https://ift.tt/QwLjP6q [02] https://ift.tt/GIPAf16

Ask HN: How can I approach our CTO who seems checked out? 4 by headscientist | 6 comments on Hacker News. I joined a mid-size startup about two years ago as a very hands-on VP of engineering. My responsibilities including managing about 25 engineers, half of whom are out of the country and half of whom are here in the US. I also do a lot of infrastructure/devops type work, I write technical specs, manage our Linear board, handle releases. This is all in addition to writing code and submitting PRs...basically in the trenches with the rest of the dev team when I'm not doing higher level work. Through the original interview process, it was clear that more hands-on management was needed and that I'd be taking over a lot of the day-to-day management to free up the CTO who was desperately under water. Since then, the CTO has seemed pretty checked out. Very frequently, he will message me to tell me he can't make it to the standup (which he stopped joining altogether for a while

Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal 12 by DicIfTEx | 2 comments on Hacker News. I don't usually go in for conspiracy theories, but this one seems pretty clear-cut and I can't see anyone else discussing it online: WhatsApp appears to be selectively censoring references to Signal. Specifically, I had changed my profile picture on WhatsApp to the Signal logo and my ‘About’ text to ‘Message me on Signal - https://signal.org/download/’. However, I noticed recently (after someone happened to open their WhatsApp in front of me and I saw their chat with me) that my WhatsApp contacts are seeing my profile picture and my ‘About’ text as blank. I've checked and this seems to be the case for all of my WhatsApp contacts. See screenshots from me and my friend's phones here: https://ift.tt/59BfROr On the bright side, this serves as an ideal demo for convincing anyone who doesn't understand why I am trying to migrate them over to Signal. Looking for good comprehensive resources or maybe even a good course (paid or free) to learn how to file good patents. I am looking for quality training that does not require a full law degree to be able to write reasonably good patents. I have a few I would like to file and the cost of doing it through an attorney is prohibitive. My only option is to learn to do it myself. Our patent system isn't designed to be equitable at all. The power is entirely in the hands of those with tons of money, be it corporations or individuals. In the past couple of decades I have missed out on filing patents for inventions that, as recently as yesterday, I discovered large corporations implemented ten years after I came-up with the solution. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why are customer support processes so awful?

Ask HN: Why are customer support processes so awful? 7 by EricRiese | 2 comments on Hacker News. I understand the cost effectiveness of outsourcing and paying bottom barrel wages for agents. But every time I have to deal with customer support for a big company, I come up with countless technical improvements I can’t believe they don’t implement. • Provide an asynchronous email-like support channel. • Sure, a real email address would get spammed, but let me kick it off from a contact page and then reply via email • Let me upload files and screenshots • This is asking a lot, but basic formatting for quotes or pre blocks for logs makes a world of difference • Let me navigate the phone tree on the web and have them call me when a representative is available instead of me waiting • Or at least give specific numbers on a web page so I can bypass the phone tree • Provide visibility into the underlying ticketing system. • If a customer support agent is typing up notes, let me see them. Ask HN: Have you considered consulting/freelance work since the pandemic? 3 by v1l | 0 comments on Hacker News. I do consulting (engineering) work for startups. And one thing I've observed in the past two years is how much more startups are open to working with freelance/fractional talent, both for ongoing help and specific projects. Would you take a research job at a UARC? 2 by ipunchghosts | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have a PhD and was offered a position as a researcher at a UARC in the United States. UARCs are university affiliated research centers setup by the US DoD to act as a liaison between DoD and academia. However, after interviewing and speaking with a few employees of a competing UARC, these places seem like research dead-ends mostly acting like a glorified defense contractor. I would like to do research and publish. HR tells me this is a great place to do these thing but when I check IEEE and Google scholar, i cant find any publications of authors from this institution. Plus, the interviews made it seem like the work is mostly doing data analysis or writing software. Nothing there lead me to believe I would be doing research day in and day out. Does anyone on HN work for a UARC? Do you like it? How much research do you do?

Why does Zig make Docker irrelevant 3 by mfext | 1 comments on Hacker News. Maybe a dumb question, but I am curious about zig’s dockerfile readme that says it makes docker irrelevant (see: https://ift.tt/S74NrQ6). Can some explain what that means?

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: How to contribute to open source as a junior engineer

Tell HN: How to contribute to open source as a junior engineer 5 by Shindi | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi all, just wanted to write a brief guide on how to contribute to open source. Saw a thread from a new engineer who wanted to know how to prove that they can work fully remote in order to get a fully remote job. Getting these type of jobs are harder as a junior employee because you don't have a track record. Contributing to open source demonstrates you go out of your way to improve code, can make changes to a new code base on your own, and can ask for help to get unstuck. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to ease in Git to someone with Git PTSD

Ask HN: How to ease in Git to someone with Git PTSD 2 by lastdong | 0 comments on Hacker News. I came across some colleagues who can’t stand GIT (even the slightest whisper). Alternatively, Perforce is used extensively in the gaming industry, really good integration with Unreal Engine. Yesterday, I finally understood why: in their previous team, someone who didn’t understand it at all, brought it in, and they ended up commiting directly to master and using spreadsheets to track who was editing what (no gitflow, no PRs) - just baffling, of course it didn’t went well, and of course they hate it. How do I get them to trust the GIT system again is an interesting challenge, but Perforce works, and basically wanted to share this amazing story.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: NDA for Interview

Ask HN: NDA for Interview 2 by anoojb | 7 comments on Hacker News. I have an interview loop scheduled with a YC company later this week. A recruiter sent me an NDA to sign…which is really odd to me. The terms feel fairly benign but I’m also inclined to kindly reject to sign it. I am a California resident. What do you think, how should I approach this issue?
