New ask Hacker News story: Opinion: We should reject take-home interview assignment if no feedback is given

Opinion: We should reject take-home interview assignment if no feedback is given 2 by kitari | 3 comments on Hacker News. Just a thought. I have been through FANG-style interviews and also some that screen with a take-home assignment. Generally I found the screening rounds of FANG to be less time intensive than take-home. If you are going to reject me after the take-home. Given my time investment wouldn't it be reasonable to ask for feedback? At the very least I can work on it and improve my skills. We should reject companies with take-home assignments if they do not provide take-home assignments. What do you guys think?

New ask Hacker News story: Why does Craigslist censor rental postings containing gender keywords

Why does Craigslist censor rental postings containing gender keywords 3 by hui-zheng | 2 comments on Hacker News. One my friend wanted to post a rental listing last week on craigslist. In it, there is a description like this: "One of the rooms is rented to a 4th-year male student, and we look for a respectful tenant to rent the other room." however, the system doesn't allow the posting to be published, citing the reason that the keyword "male" is used. It's an automatic block. No human review or flagging. It seems craigslist blocks rental posting with gender keyword regardless of the intention of the word's usage. Why does Craigslist does that? Is it to comply with some law? or is it because of some potential legal liability as the host of classified advertisements? Is it a technical reason?

Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter? 2 by going_ham | 4 comments on Hacker News. Of all concern, when they know I am going to be rejected, why do they take 2 months to send that generic rejection letter? They aren't even looking at my thing. Can't they just do it immediately? And why should they put "careful consideration" when they know they are going to reject as soon as they see my CV? It would be lot easier if they can reject within 30 minutes. Companies pretending to review documents just wants to make me puke.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why does it feel like MMO server tech hasn't changed?

Ask HN: Why does it feel like MMO server tech hasn't changed? 2 by Daegalus | 1 comments on Hacker News. So this comes from the recent Release of New World from Amazon. They have a hard cap of 2k players and 2-3x that per server I'm queues. They are adding more servers often but usually not enough. Now, I love the MMO genre and have been through many MMO launches, and this isn't new to me. But as a DevOps engineer, I wonder how we haven't improved server tech to minimize or remove this? I don't know much about MMO servers out outside of the one I'm building for an old MMO, but I feel like a new modern MMO should have some innovations to solve server capacities or so many servers. Why does it feel we have made no progress towards limitless servers, or single world games where you have fleets of servers handling 1 world? Why are we still separating players by servers and not employing phasing to help with clutter of people seen. Or move characters to be disconn

Ask HN: Do you think Scrum is a sham? 5 by wizardofmysore | 4 comments on Hacker News. I have used scrum and I dont see it really helps people build the right product. There is so much jargon and cruft around it; planning poker, story points, scrum master etc.. Software quality of what is built in the scrum way seems poor as it does local optimization and doesnt focus on long term.. seems like some thing that would work for consultancies the best? Simple Kanban seems more effective, do you feel the same way? Am I doing scrum wrong? Is scrum built to ensure that program managers / product managers have something to do?

Ask HN: Accessible resources on making a modern static type system? 2 by brundolf | 0 comments on Hacker News. Crafting Interpreters was a great resource for parsing, but working on the static type system for my language project I'm mostly feeling my way around in the dark and making stuff up as I go. That's going better than expected, but I still feel I would benefit from something at around the same level as CI but for type systems (checking and inference; mostly inference, but also things like generic types and refinement). Something practical and light on formal theory, with insight from industry, that lays a foundation from which to keep learning. I tried reading about Hindley-Milner etc directly, and it went way over my head.

Ask HN: Complete Deepfake Nudes – The Future? 5 by blunte | 1 comments on Hacker News. This might be a bit controversial for HN, but it's safe to assume that some HN readers have been on the internet before. For those who are familiar with some of the Reddit groups, you may have noticed a shift from simple sharing of photos to promotional sharing which leads to an OnlyF* type site where there is an economic goal. Nothing wrong with this, and not judging; just an observation. So the question is, if we can generate incredibly detailed and believable faces, why not entire bodies with faces? This must exist already. Who is working on a system to build adult content, made to order, that doesn't involve actual humans? We can already produce very believable landscapes, structures, and moving objects. How long until the carnal content is algorithmically produced?

Ask HN: How much Slack do you give a recruiter? 4 by throwaway97531 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m (almost) at the offer stage with a company that I really like. The engineers that I’ve spoken with are great, the work sounds interesting, and the industry is exciting. My experience with the recruiter (from the company) has been wanting. They had email problems, it takes a long time to get responses, and they told me an offer was coming more than a week ago. I had to reach out to find out what was going on with the offer (it’s still coming) I feel like once I get in the engineering group, things will be fine, but the delays with the recruiter are making me have second thoughts about what otherwise was a very exciting prospect. Is slow communication indicative of bad communication throughout the company, or just a fluke? Should I be worried?

Ask HN: How can I get better at original thinking and being creative? 3 by MikeLumos | 4 comments on Hacker News. I've never felt like I'm good at being creative, coming up with original ideas, my own unique independent thoughts. Even though I have spent years practicing "creative" skills - traditional and digital art, writing, gamedev, programming. I've made a lot of things, I'm pretty proud of some of my projects. But "creativity" still feels like a mystery to me. I've had a few good ideas over the years, but they happened by accident, and I can't make them happen deliberately. Sometimes I can go months without an original thought. If I want to intentionally invent a new idea for an app, or a game, or a story, or a business - I feel like I can't, no matter how hard I try. And generally speaking, in life, I feel like I'm pretty bad at having my own unique take/opinion on things, even though I'm trying. Most of my "controv

Ask HN: Software design patterns for projects without a scope? 10 by rlayton2 | 4 comments on Hacker News. My work often involves starting with creating small prototypes that show a concept or solve a very specific problem. That prototype solves that problem, the client is happy and wants to extend it. The software grows from there, usually one feature at time. For these projects, the client usually doesn't know what comes next until they need it. This extension can sometimes be immediate, or could be years after the fact. "Common wisdom" states that the prototype should be thrown away when the concept is proved and the funds come in, but for me there is never a point at which that makes sense. As I mentioned, it's one feature at a time. I feel I do a good job at designing those prototypes in a decoupled, extensible way. I think about what direction the project could take, and try to put the right levels of abstraction in. Despite my best efforts, oftentimes I'
