New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What data are you using to finetune LLMs?

Ask HN: What data are you using to finetune LLMs? 2 by rahimnathwani | 1 comments on Hacker News. There have been a number of posts on HN recently about how to fine tune LLMs. These posts talk mainly about: - different methods of finetuning (full retraining, LoRA) - different base models - data sets (e.g. Alpaca) - objectives (creativity, instruction following) I haven't seen much discussion about people finetuning an LLM on domain-specific data, e.g. - medical records - standup comedy jokes - internal corporate data So, are any of you fine-tuning your LLMs using such niche data? I'd love to hear about your experiences and motivations! Even if you're working with proprietary datasets, I'm still interested. After all, knowing what you're doing won't allow us to duplicate it, as we don't have access to the same data.

New ask Hacker News story: “AI” is a misnomer. There's no ability to reason. Its just pattern matching

“AI” is a misnomer. There's no ability to reason. Its just pattern matching 2 by jonthepirate | 1 comments on Hacker News. I think GPT is really neat. However, it cannot solve even the most basic reasoning problems I tried. It feels like it understands what I'm asking for and it provides good answers, but so does Google. I think calling this "Artificial Intelligence" creates a misunderstanding of what's going on because it's pattern matching. Sure, the input and output is way better than Google, but if it can't reason, where's the intelligence? The whole thing seems like a hype train that I'm evidently not on.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to upgrade my personal project database from Notion

Ask HN: How to upgrade my personal project database from Notion 2 by patrickwalton | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've been using Notion as the database for some personal projects. The backend of the projects are written in Python. I don't have any formal CS training and have a vague idea that the better database solution has something to do with "data warehouses" and SQL, but I'm not sure where to go from here.

New ask Hacker News story: Interest in SQL with IndexedDB and Web Storage in Web Browsers?

Interest in SQL with IndexedDB and Web Storage in Web Browsers? 3 by taehoon | 3 comments on Hacker News. I shared my project, GlueSQL, for the first time yesterday night in my time zone, and I was a bit sad to see no reactions. I know that can happen, but there's something I'm really wondering about. In our newest version, we've added a cool feature. Now you can use SQL in web browsers with in-memory, localStorage, sessionStorage, and IndexedDB. Even better, you can make tables in different storages and join them all together. This was a big reason why I started GlueSQL, so I thought lots of people would be interested. But so far, not much response. Don't people want to use SQL with the storage options that are already in their web browsers? Personally, I think this would be super useful for building complex web front-end applications.

New ask Hacker News story: Suggest HN: Sort by most upvoted comment in subtree

Suggest HN: Sort by most upvoted comment in subtree 2 by NoRelToEmber | 0 comments on Hacker News. A highly-upvoted reply may still be buried if the parent comment gets few upvotes. Sorting by the most upvoted element of the entire comment subtree, instead of just by its root, would fix this. There may be unwanted side-effects, so this could be just an experiment or option at first. If comments are already sorted in a less naive way than I have assumed, or if this was already rejected for other reasons, you may consider this suggestion moot.

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Makers beware, Etsy will ruin your small business

Tell HN: Makers beware, Etsy will ruin your small business 57 by martin_a | 3 comments on Hacker News. Storytime! A friend of mine asked me to create a rather niche 3D printed part for him. That worked very well for him, so I thought about providing this part to others, too. As I'm good with technical things, but not so good with marketing, I turned to Etsy to sell these parts. They handle SEO, payments etc. pp. for you, so you can focus on creating. Now, for everyone who doesn't know it, Etsy is also FULL of people who just print articulated dragons and other "entertainment stuff", where copyright/proper CC-licensing is, I would say, seems to be handled rather lax. Anyway, I created all my models myself, so I'm safe on that. I set my store up, put up my parts and waited. Etsys SEO magic (and paid advertisements) did its work and after about two weeks, orders started coming in. And it was just not a single order, but one every two days or so, with a basket valu

New ask Hacker News story: How to Cancel Your Hiccups

How to Cancel Your Hiccups 2 by RevRal | 0 comments on Hacker News. Okay, this is a little challenging to describe, it is something that I've always been able to do. I've tried to describe it to many people, but so far only ~3 people have successfully executed the technique. First, practice a "false hiccup". Do this by mildly inhaling, then abruptly close off the inhalation somewhere in the throat. There should be some kind of "vacuum" effect that feels similar to a hiccup, you should feel this somewhere between your belly and chest. Next, time this "false hiccup" precisely with a "true hiccup". If done correctly, the hiccup should "cancel". Using this technique, it has been many many years since I've hiccuped more than twice in a row.

Ask HN: Tired of being a software engineer, what next? 5 by throwaway99923 | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN. I kind of feel I have wasted my time/life on this career. Maybe someone can give me decent advice. I am in my 40s now. I started coding when I was a young teen, copying code from books in the library to build text based games. I ended up making lots of my own games, some got popular. I grew a love for tinkering, coding, and building things. I eagerly joined the CS dept at university in the early 2000s, when CS attendance was at a record low. But I didn't care, I loved it. When I graduated, I could not get a job. This was around 2004-2005. I submitted my resume to many companies and got nothing. I ended up working temp jobs, until I finally got lucky at a career fair, hit it off with a software QA person, and got my first SWE role. This job wasn't exactly pure coding, but more like a data scientist/engineer role. But I became the coding expert on my team, and built m

Ask HN: If you use an LLM, which one do you use? 4 by zopper | 3 comments on Hacker News. It seems to me that most startups use one of the LLMs from OpenAI (ChatGPT / GPT-4), other closed-source LLMs like Bard or Claude are not that popular and open-source LLMs are only really used by researchers or hobbyists who run them locally. Curious to hear from others who are building something on top of an LLM, which one do you use? Has anyone fine-tuned and deployed their own LLM or do you just rely on ChatGPT?

Ask HN: Any privacy-preserving minimalist phone launchers for Android? 2 by yakkomajuri | 1 comments on Hacker News. I came across "minimalist phone" [1] and really like the idea. However, its Privacy Policy does not spark joy. In fact, I haven't found great alternatives that don't send your data to Google. Would love recommendations of open source/privacy-preserving alternatives. Although, thinking about it now - the data it could collect about what apps I use, when, and how is probably something Google has access to anyway on Android phones? :D [1]: https://ift.tt/7XaleFt

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to Cope with Pressure to be the best?

Ask HN: How to Cope with Pressure to be the best? 5 by imheretolearn | 0 comments on Hacker News. Being raised in an Asian household, my siblings and I were always expected to be the best at everything we do. Having lived under the pressure of being the best at everything, I have internalized the behavior. If I’m reading a book, I want to squeeze every last bit of knowledge and apply it so that I can be the best at whatever the book is teaching. If I’m playing chess, I optimize for winning every game. The only acceptable goal I set for myself is being number 1 not number 2 or 3. Because of this, I cannot enjoy any activity. I want to read just for kicks and the joy of understanding a new topic. I want to play chess so that I can understand every strategy even if it means I will lose some games. But I am unable to do so. Has anyone else experienced this? What are some strategies to deal with self set high goals and pressure?

Total company is about 17 people. Our business model is basically...we collect publicly available data, clean, normalize, and enriched with other data sources. The data is made available via an API as well as front end. I basically architected the entire backend infrastructure that manages all of our data pipelines as well as was significantly involved in development of the models/algorithms for enriching data. Chief Development Officer helped out with some execution in early stages. Chief UX officer was responsible for front end. He also manages the API operations after we publish data to the db he manages. During formation, ~3

Ask HN: Why do all of our private communications flow through corporate servers? 6 by asim | 7 comments on Hacker News. I feel like we ask this question a lot and we come up with the answer which is self-hosting but it never really results in anything that truly succeeds. Why do we let all of our private communication flow through corporate services? There was the time when doing internet services was hard but that's not really the case anymore. It's not just email or chat. It's everything, everything flows through corporate servers. It doesn't make sense to replicate all of the services at this time, but we're also not doing anything to pull ourselves away from all of this, purely for convenience, ease of use. I've seen a few efforts to kind of build entirely grown up ecosystems that separate us away from them, but then the experience is always subpar. I don't think we'll ever replace what's already there, but if the way in which we consume servi

Ask HN: Is Rust worth investing in as a reliable C-alt given its recent saga? 4 by behnamoh | 6 comments on Hacker News. I've been programming in high-level languages for a while and recently I was thinking about learning something more bare metal. Rust stood out as one of the popular C/C++ alternatives. But for me, the investment in a language is driven by not just the beauty of the language itself, but the community around it. As an outsider who's keeping an eye on Rust, am I better off sticking to vanilla C/C++?

I've been going through 100's of bookmarks I made over the years, all carefully tagged and organized, but a lot of the pages are taken down. Folders aren't perfect because some pages deserve multiple tags.

Ask HN: GPT prompt crafters, what are your most effective/favorite prompts? 4 by dr_kiszonka | 0 comments on Hacker News. What GPT prompts do you find most effective? There are so many resources with example prompts that it is hard to test them all. I am primarily interested in programming prompts to make ChatGPT/Bard generate (as close as possible to) hallucinations-free Python and JavaScript (Google Apps Script) code. But, please, do share anything that you yourself find helpful! [I am using "prompt crafters" and not "prompt engineers" not to dilute further what it means to be an engineer. Ask HN: What can we learn about human cognition from the performance of LLMs 2 by abrax3141 | 0 comments on Hacker News. What can we learn about human cognition from the performance of LLMs Some hypotheses (adapted from other posts): * We have learned that Spreading Activation, when applied through high-dimensional non-symbolic network (the network formed by embedding vectors) may be able to account for abstraction in fluent language. * We have learned that "fluent reasoning" (sometimes called "inline" or "online" reasoning), that is, the shallow reasoning embedded in fluent language, may be more powerful than usually thought. * We have learned that "talking to yourself" (externally, in the case of GPTs, and potentially also internally in the case of human's "hearing yourself think") is able to successfully maintain enough short-term context to track naturally long chains of argument (via contextually-guided fluent reasoning, as

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to address fake reviews for competitors on Google Business?

Ask HN: How to address fake reviews for competitors on Google Business? 2 by graboidhunter | 0 comments on Hacker News. I work for a local service area business. We rely partially on our Google Business profile for business. The past 3-4 years has seen numerous fake profiles appear in our area. These profiles are fake because they exist solely for the purposes of lead generation (either through a 'rank-and-rent' scheme or for a client specifically) which is explicitly against the Google Business guidelines. Sometimes these are easy enough to report and Google removes them. However, once they gain reviews they are much harder to get Google to take action on. The problem is that these reviews are fake. If you look at the profile of the "individual" who submitted the review, you'll see that they have reviews on several other businesses which can be tied back to the same marketing firm usually in various cities across the US. It's obvious all these people are n

Ask HN: Is PhD in AI worth it if I'd like to conduct my own research? 3 by amts | 1 comments on Hacker News. One acquaintance of mine, a teacher of informatics, offers me to enter PhD studies in AI at one local (EU) math/CS center where he has some connections. Because not many CS/math graduates currently want to proceed to a PhD and they're interested in AI and want more PhD students in this field. He's the author of this [1] article on quantum fuzzy logic, which had received some international recognition, is obviously attached to it and would indirectly like me to build upon it. It seems decent to play with, but I wouldn't like to dedicate a whole dissertation to it, because there's more fundamental research to it. I'd love to apply to Michael Levin's lab at Tufts for some research assistance etc with some experimental ideas, but would like to build some minimal hardware and software prototypes first. Ask HN: Is there a web browser, that's just a browser? 3 by websap | 6 comments on Hacker News. Edge, Firefox, Brave and Chrome are now trying to become more than web browsers. They are trying to control the user experience by pushing ads, services, and their own agenda for how the web should be. Brave tries to do some odd crypto rubbish that I couldn't care about less. I've now switched over to Safari, with content blockers, my password manager and 1 Blocker to block ads. It seems like Apple is the only company that somewhat cares about user privacy, every other company would trade their users' data in for a quick buck. Any other open source browsers that are just browsers?

General plan is to have a 1-3 VLANed cameras, preferably with safe/integrated auto-IR mode when dark and integrated mics. I'd like it to be remotely accessible/stream-able via a web ui/webrtc with auth. I have Synology NAS, Asus/OpenWRT router, and an OPNSense device between modem and router. The hardware landscape looks kinda crappy. I wanted to maybe do a camera module [1][2] with Pi Zero 2 W [3] but the latter is unavailable due to supply chain stuff and the former is either USB or lacks a built-in mic. Tell HN: Be aware of people trying to scam contractors 17 by AlexITC | 4 comments on Hacker News. In short, I just received a nice proposal to work on a new contract, the potential customer sent me a "document" with the project specs which turned out to be a password-protected compressed file with some pictures and a ".exe" file inside. I submitted the executable to virustotal which reports this as a trojan (https://ift.tt/JT7s0ik), seems like this takes screenshots and steals browser data which can be used for other purposes later. Anyway, be cautious with proposals you receive.

Here are some things I have already studied: - Calculus - Differential, Integral, Sequences and Series, Vector (partial differential equations, gradients, Lagrange multipliers) - Statistics and Probability basics - normal distributions, hypothesis testing ("rejecting null hypothesis"), combinations/permutations - Linear Algebra - matrices, vector spaces - Abstract algebra conce

Though as modern media has caught up with present-day monetisation models, the paywall is rather prevalent. (Not trying to cast aspersions at paywall setups) Just, as an Australian (insert any nation), it's hard for me to justify paying for non-my-own-nation media channels. The archive.org links are great, but someone generally has to post as a comment, or dang (who is already too dedicated) has to manually change the url. Lots of people are moving from more expensive cities to cheaper ones. But which are the best cheaper cities, especially for those who do value cities that aren't just full of retirees or mostly tech workers? I'll go first: I was pleasantly surprised by Durham NC when I visited there. It's small but fairly vibrant for its size, with plenty of young people and people of diverse backgrounds and livelihoods. (ie not just mostly tech workers, lol) For a North American city, it's fairly walkable and bikeable, and it's on an Amtrak line that can take you to neighboring cities and the entire East Coast. Cost of housing is reasonable, and because it's in the "Research Triangle", there is a viable local job market for academics and professionals, so techies don't

Wistia Alternatives? They Keep Raising Their Prices 2 by jhonovich | 0 comments on Hacker News. Can anyone suggest Wistia alternatives that they have had success with? While we have no objections to Wistia raising their prices over time, when we originally signed up many many years ago, there was no charge on a per video uploaded basis. Now, they are requiring $0.25 per month per video, i.e., $6 per year per video. We hosted lots of videos (usually short, low views). Because of this, the charges for us get very expensive especially relatively to how often they are viewed. We've tried to speak with Wistia but no real progress. They do clearly have us at a disadvantage because we would have to move videos out but we are reaching the point that it makes more strategic and financial sense to do that rather than pay Wistia so much more money. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
