However, commenting is a bit buggy (have to kill the app to see new replies) and notifications are absent. Can anyone recommend a full featured (ie not read only) app for HN? I’m hoping for minimalistic design, functional comments with notifications and search. No ads, can be free or for purchase.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Registration of a domain name and employee IP

Ask HN: Registration of a domain name and employee IP 2 by jackfruit2 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Does the purchase of a domain name by an employee for a side project automatically become their employer's intellectual property under assignments agreement? I'm looking to leave my current employer to bootstrap a start up and feel the urgency to buy the domain name immediately in readiness for the intense development and marketing that would follow. I've signed one of these assignment agreements as part of the employment contract a few years back but now want to press ahead with my own dream of a new start up. Could the purchase of the official domain now signal that I have started the project whilst employed by my current employer? I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation that could offer some insight, other than the standard advice of speak to a lawyer?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Should I sell my software to my employer?

Ask HN: Should I sell my software to my employer? 2 by ultrarunner | 2 comments on Hacker News. I work in a niche industry that has traditionally made imperfect use of equipment designed for other industries. I was hired as a part-time assistant and quickly identified numerous pain points in the process and began exploring the problem as a side project. Fast forward a few years and my software is currently running this sector of the business. I have significantly streamlined a historically unreliable process. While I developed it in my own free time, I am now salaried at a level that is high for the industry but low for an engineering position. The company is going through rapid expansion, morale is low, and burnout is a constant threat. The CEO has indicated that they would like to "control their destiny" and as such wants ownership rights to my software. They've offered $10k, which is not a life changing amount of money for me. I suspect that rejecting this offer may

Ask HN: What do you consider a founding engineer? 8 by jedberg | 1 comments on Hacker News. I keep seeing ads for "Founding Engineer" jobs, and right now I see an add for #2 Founding Engineer. In my mind, a founding engineer is someone who holds at least 10% of the stock or has at least 50% as much as the founders, if they have less than 20% each. What is your definition of a founding engineer? It seems like most of these ads are just using the term for an early hire.

Consumer electricity prices in Germany climb to record high: 45-80 Cents/kwh 20 by 88840-8855 | 21 comments on Hacker News. I just received a letter from my electricity supplier. They are bankrupt and I am exposed to 80Cents/kwh now as they stop delivering electricity immediately. Here is a brief summary of the electricity crisis in Germany: Consumer electricity prices in Germany climb to a record high despite a warm winter. Not only mine but already several more electricity providers went bankrupt in the past days. The price available to consumers is now 45-80 Cents/kwh. Many providers have stopped accepting new customers as they need to recalculate their propositions, leaving consumers exposed to the "basic supply" which has reached 80 Eurocents per kwh in many regions. My plan is now to take a contract that I can terminate monthly and hope that the situation will improve. If they accept my application, I will have to pay 65 Eurocents per kwh starting now. The bad news i

Ask HN: Someone Patented _my_ Software? 7 by throwaway123756 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I have some software that I (my tiny company) has been selling for 15+ years. I just discovered yesterday that someone has been granted a patent on configuring my software to do essentially what it was designed to do. The patent is complete with screenshots of the software, and though they tried to hide the title-bar to obscure it, they missed a few details that makes it obvious what product is in the screenshots. The person/company with the patent hasn't contacted me. A few years ago they said they wanted to build a business around my solution, which I thought was cool. But they certainly didn't claim a patent. Do I need to do anything as long as they don't come after me?

Ask HN: Buy a used 1U as a compiler server 4 by tubby12345 | 8 comments on Hacker News. Lately (last ~6 months) I've transitioned to working on large C++ projects (e.g., LLVM). Naturally compile times are long and a serious barrier to learning/iteration. At work I have a beefy workstation (32 core threadripper, 128GB RAM, 2TB ssd) so I don't feel the pain as much . I'd like to get something comparable at home but I don't want to spend 5k or whatever. Looking around on ebay you find lots of decommissioned 1U units that are pretty cheap, pretty old, but multicore. Would it be a bad idea to get one of these if I'm going to use it just to offload compiling (either through vscode remote or by some other means)?

Ask HN: Are we entering a 0-click era? 7 by apienx | 3 comments on Hacker News. Just finished reading Project Zero's sobering blog post on the NSO 0-click iOS exploit (see googleprojectzero.blogspot.com). If an integer overflow vulnerability in iMessage's GIF codec can be turned into a pretty much full-fledged 64-bit VM, then there's simply no trusting anything more sophisticated than a tin can phone. And even if you only use a basic feature phone, you can still be targeted by 0-click (e)SIM attacks (e.g. the ones targeting S@T browser or WIB and probably many more yet-to-be-discovered flaws). Plus all the (pseudo?)-lawfully backdoored layers (pretty sure it doesn't take less-than-democratic states more than a few threatening emails to the compliance department of most banks to be get access to their banking app). Assuming that the number of 0-click exploits will increase with the complexity of our phones, do you think we're entering a great-equalizer-era where t

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked?

Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked? 155 by gregsadetsky | 87 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I've just had a bizarre thing happen and wanted to see if the HN community could come up with some theories as to what happened. LastPass blocked a login attempt from Brazil (it wasn't me). According to an email I received from LastPass, this login was using the LastPass account's master password. The email doesn't look like it's a phishing attempt. What troubles me is that the master password was stored in a local encrypted KeePassX file. I can imagine that someone has my KeePassX file and the (completely different) password to this file. If that's the case, I'm in a world of hurt. But are there any other possibilities? Is the email from LastPass accurate i.e. was the login attempt actually using my master password? Is there some LastPass extension installed on some computer still having a valid auth token allowing them to login as me to LastPass

Ask HN: How to navigate USB-C charging hell 4 by kuon | 3 comments on Hacker News. I realize this topic has been discussed numerous times, but after some research I found about 50 different "theories" on how it is supposed to work. As a developer and electronic engineer, it deeply frustrate me to have no good understanding of it. I am quite sure that the actual protocol and electrical details are simple, but because everybody comes with their own theory, navigating google results is really hard. Long story short, I built a new threadripper workstation, and none of the gazillion of USB port will charge my One Plus 5T phone. I tried all the the A-C ports with different cables (aren't A port just 4 contacts? what can be in the cable, resistors?...). I also tried C-C and it doesn't charge either. So, two questions: - Is there a good, technically precise and right explanation of the whole situation? I tried reading the USB standard, but it would take days to extract a p

Ask HN: Have you been in a team that did “daily standups” asynchronously? 9 by retention456 | 9 comments on Hacker News. In the past, all of my teams have had daily-standup meetings. Ie, recurring meetings scheduled for a specific time, when everyone would join the meeting (either physically or virtually) and give their updates In an attempt to reduce people's meeting load and avoid interruptions, we're considering doing asynchronous slack standups instead. Ie, everyone posts their daily-update on slack at the start of their workday (no specific time). People can then follow up either on slack, or in-person, or offline, regarding any of the updates that others have posted. Has anyone had experience with doing similar asynchronous daily updates, as an alternative to daily standup meetings? If so, how did it go?

A 'source only' product is one that is purchased with the source code of the product. The source code of the product cannot be shared, but it can be modified by the customer to suit their needs. The idea of 'source only' is not new at all. Back in the late 90s when Delphi was popular, many developers created and sold components to other developers (e.g. UI widgets). These components came with full source code of the components but they were not open source. Fast forward to today, what are examples of 'source only' products doing well? New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What is “the answer” to distracted driving due to cell phones?

Ask HN: What is “the answer” to distracted driving due to cell phones? 6 by jrs235 | 12 comments on Hacker News. It seems like more and more I notice people driving while looking at their cell phones. Even at stop lights when people just "quickly check" their phones it distracts them from noticing the lights change and then only a few cars getting through on green and several more running the red. What's the "best answer" to this dilemma in your opinion? Is it steeper fines if caught? More enforcement? Regulation disabling devices if/when certain conditions are detected? It's getting to where someone leaving the bar after a few drinks but focusing on driving is better at driving then a completely sober person looking at their phone.

Ask HN: Recommended Domain Registrars? 3 by brundolf | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm currently on Hover, which is mostly fine. Except it doesn't support a certain kind of DNS record (can't remember which; ALIAS maybe?) which is necessary to get requests without the www. prefix to resolve correctly to my Heroku apps Google Domains is out because I don't use Google products/have a Google account Security is a high priority because my emails go through one of my custom domains Those are about all of my requirements; it's also just hard to know which registrars are trustworthy Would be very grateful for recommendations
