New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What happened to video progress bars?

Ask HN: What happened to video progress bars? 3 by BraverHeart | 1 comments on Hacker News. It seems all notable platforms are deliberately getting rid of this crucial UI, it has become frustrating, especially if you wanted to skip parts of the video or rewind to a specific point in the video, which are reasonable user behaviors. I find myself downloading videos to "solve" this.

Should I invest my time in becoming proficient in Rust, known for its system-level programming capabilities, or dive into the world of Machine Learning, with its growing demand across various industries? I'd also like to know which of these skills should be prioritized for a quicker edge in the job market. Additionally, how long does it typically take to ramp up in either of these fields? Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Ask HN: Project that amends Git history based on a schedule 4 by SamBorick | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, sometime in the last year someone posted a project that would modify git history in a repository based on a provided schedule. You could specify a time range, and it would go through and move commits outside of that time range. I've googled and checked the various HN search products, but I haven't been able to find it! Does anyone remember?

Tell HN: This is how you can bypass YouTube's Anti-Adblock mechanism 3 by mrkramer | 0 comments on Hacker News. This is what I found out so for on desktop web version of YouTube; I'm using uBlock Origin and I started getting that annoying pop-up notification about adblokcers not being allowed and after few days YouTube blocked my video playback so I disabled my adblocker for like 3 days and I got fed up of ads and I turned it on again and I'm using it ever since....without ads and without YouTube's pop-up notification on how adblockers are not allowed (4 days now without ads and without YouTube bothering me). My understanding is that my account and/or browser id or whatever got marked as "converted" in YouTube's/Google's database so they are not checking my account and browser again. Maybe it's just A/B testing or a bug idk but after they blocked watching videos for me, I gave in for a few days and I turned adblocker again later and now again I&

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Do you use a mini PC, and what's your workflow?

Ask HN: Do you use a mini PC, and what's your workflow? 4 by shortrounddev2 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I work fully remote, and like to go out for lunch during the day. Sometimes a work emergency will come up and I either need to head home, or have a laptop with me. I would prefer to have a small 7 or 8 inch netbook which can fit in a very small bag, but it seems like they don't really make these types of PCs anymore. I do, however, see a LOT of mini PCs. This product confuses me: who is frequently near a monitor and power outlet, but not a desktop computer or laptop? It seems like a niche product but there appears to be quite a lot of mini PC manufacturers out there. Do you use these things? What is your workflow/use case?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Are there valid Google Search alternatives?

Ask HN: Are there valid Google Search alternatives? 2 by lnrd | 3 comments on Hacker News. Google Search is broken. I wanted a list of the most popular text editors for writers. I searched "best mac text editors" and of course all articles are about code editors, silly me. I then searched "best mac text editors for writing" and Google just spits out same results, a bunch of listicles about VScode vs VIM. Completely ignoring the "for writing" part of my Search (not excluding the term, just giving irrelevant results). It has become so comically bad that I would be surprised there is not some cool startup out there trying to reinvent a Search that just works. Any hints?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Need tips from Software Developers on maintaining health

Ask HN: Need tips from Software Developers on maintaining health 5 by srbhr | 9 comments on Hacker News. Hello World, I'm struggling a bit with my health. As a software developer all day long, I keep staring on my laptop. Sitting and I'm so used to this that even on Saturdays, I've (out of habit) open up the laptop and try something out. This is impacting my health. - I've gained weight. - I've got nothing else to do. - I have tried gym but extensive work hours keep messing with my rhythm. The internet advice is from people who aren't in the same situation as I am. They say wake up at certain time, eat X Y Z meals. N % protien, G gms of Sodium etc. But I on the other hand need to run builds, do deployments, and fix if anything is broken. I get mentally exhausted by the end of day. How are you able to deal with this? Need help please.

Ask HN: Recommendations for Visiting the Japanese Countryside 3 by ciconia | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN folks! My 15-year old son and I are going to visit Japan over the winter holidays. We're planning to start our trip in Fukuoka, then slowly work our way north until we arrive in Tokyo, where we'll spend the last 2 days of our trip, then fly back home. We'd like to visit the Japanese countryside, to do some trails and maybe even some ski, and experience the Japanese life away from the big tourist attractions. Would you have any recommendations on places that are somewhat off the beaten path, but worth visiting? We'd be really grateful for any pointers. Cheers!

New ask Hacker News story: Additional Notification of 23andMe DNA Relatives Security Breach

Additional Notification of 23andMe DNA Relatives Security Breach 4 by pgrote | 0 comments on Hacker News. We are following up on an email that we sent earlier this month regarding our ongoing security investigation. We learned that certain profile information – which a customer creates and chooses to share with their genetic relatives in the DNA Relatives feature – was accessed from individual 23andMe.com accounts without the account users’ authorization. While our investigation is ongoing, we believe the threat actor was able to access certain accounts in instances where the usernames and passwords that were used on 23andMe.com were the same as those used on other websites that had been previously compromised or otherwise available. How does this impact you? After further review, we have identified your DNA Relatives profile as one that was impacted in this incident. Specifically, there was unauthorized access to one or more 23andMe accounts that were connected to you through DNA R

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What's the point of automated skill assessment tests in the age of AI?

Ask HN: What's the point of automated skill assessment tests in the age of AI? 4 by neverminder | 3 comments on Hacker News. Back in the day there were two choices: refuse do do it or jump through the hoops. Today nobody I know bothers with automated skill assessment tests any more. Folks just feed it into ChatGPT and be done. Yesterday I've applied to a role I found interesting, received a confirmation email and seconds later - skill assessment test link. So it looks like nowadays humans no longer bother reading the CVs, it's all left to the bots. The test involved a tech stack I was not familiar with, so I thought it would be a good opportunity for the ChatGPT and it handled it well without even breaking a sweat. The though occurred to me that today one side uses AI to create and evaluate these tests and the other side uses AI to complete them. Is this the new reality? What's even the point?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Bidirectional Text Navigation

Ask HN: Bidirectional Text Navigation 5 by java-man | 3 comments on Hacker News. This question is specifically for people who use right-to-left OSes and software (Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, etc.) When navigating (using cursor arrow keys) or editing "mixed" text (text that contains a mixture of right-to-left (RTL) and left-to-right (LTR) segments, what is your expectation (or wish) regarding the caret movement and appearance? A bit of background. It looks like initially, many software packages employed what we might call a "visual" navigation, that is, repeating RIGHT arrow key would move the caret one symbol to the right, regardless of the directionality of the text. Some time after 2007, it seems, there was a switch to a "logical" navigation when the movement of the caret is governed by the position of the insertion index in the underlying (unicode) text. In this mode, repeatedly pressing RIGHT key results in the caret switching direction when it crosses t

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: use “then” to talk about time or order, use “than” to make comparisons

Tell HN: use “then” to talk about time or order, use “than” to make comparisons 2 by guessmyname | 0 comments on Hacker News. For the people in the crowd who are still learning English and for the native English speakers who occasionally get mixed up with these words, the simplest method to distinguish between "then" and "than" is by understanding their distinct purposes. “Then” primarily relates to time, sequence, or consequence. It is used when you are talking about what happens next or the order of events. For example, “I’ll finish my homework, and then I’ll play video games.” On the other hand, “than” is employed for making comparisons between two things. It is the word to use when you want to express that one thing is different, better, or worse than another. For instance, “Apples taste better than oranges.”

Ask HN: On improving the quality of submissions (on the top/front page) 4 by karmakaze | 4 comments on Hacker News. I noticed that I now sometimes write negative comments for poor/incorrect posts which in the past I would have merely ignored. At first I felt bad about doing so but was compelled nonetheless. On reflection I think it's a response to the number of low-effort/low-quality or factually devoid/incorrect stories that do sometimes make it to the front page. I see value in a feedback mechanism for raising the bar of top voted submissions. Since posts aren't downvoted flagging is reserved for other use, what other acceptable means is there for providing this signal? At the same time, if there's not already discussion on such a post, even a negative one is engagement which could further popularize it. Another thing I've started doing is being more liberal with my upvotes to get them above the floor of low-quality post scores. Does this seem like what's happe

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: 3G sunsetting is remotely killing every Subaru Outback battery

Tell HN: 3G sunsetting is remotely killing every Subaru Outback battery 6 by siftrics | 2 comments on Hacker News. Subaru partnered with a service called STARLINK which shares your location in the event of collisions, among other things. STARLINK intermittently tries to phone home by hitting 3G towers. Now that 3G is shutting down, the digital communications module (DCM) gets stuck in an infinite loop of 1. Phone home, expending battery charge 2. Fail, because 3G doesn't work anymore 3. Go back to step 1 This effectively remotely drains the battery of every Subaru Outback built between 2015 and 2020. Even if you drive your car every day, its battery will die and you won't be able to start it. Other models are probably affected, too. There was a class action lawsuit. But this is a pretty egregious engineering oversight, given they were still producing defective cars in 2020, hardly two years before 3G flipped off. Will a brand ever produce a reliable, mechanical car? Why shou

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is it ethical to sell subscriptions to software without a cloud?

Ask HN: Is it ethical to sell subscriptions to software without a cloud? 5 by internetter | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hello! I'm working on a novel service that feels most likely to materialize as a cloud based SaaS application. I'd like to provide a cloud component as that does present advantages, however for privacy I'd like to provide a cheaper option that runs locally on a person's device (say, 1$ a month vs 3$). I'll say, renting local software, such as the adobe suite, is a very frustrating experience. I'd much, much, much prefer to own it outright. When presented with a subscription that doesn't have an obvious reason (such as streaming services), I tend to look for alternatives. But at the same time, the program is the sort of thing you'd see as a SaaS. The local option is certainly not the primary option, it's more like a "if this can't work for you, we might be able to offer this, which comes with plenty of it's own issues&

Does HN have an archive of its flagged threads? 3 by chaps | 6 comments on Hacker News. I've seen some pretty silly things on the HN front page that have stayed up for way longer than expected. But I've noticed multiple articles that criticize Andreessen's manifesto have been flagged to not be on the front page. So I'm curious -- is there an archive, or an API that would show how often a thread is flagged, deleted, or pulled from the front page?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What are data structures important to event sequences?

Ask HN: What are data structures important to event sequences? 1 by goloroden | 0 comments on Hacker News. I am trying to delve into the analysis of event sequences (i.e., sequences of temporally non-discrete events). Typical questions are: Which event often happens after which other event? How much time on average passes between two events of type X? Are there events that occur particularly frequently during certain seasons? And so on ... mainly questions regarding frequency, time, or probability of one event or multiple events and their relationships to each other. However, I find little material on this on the internet. There are a few pieces of information on event sequences. There's much more on time-series topics, but that's a bit different. What algorithms, data structures, etc. should one be familiar with if one wants to deal with the analysis and prediction of events? And what keywords should I watch out for?

How far one should live from a Nuclear Power Plant? is 50 miles good enough 2 by HEagle | 3 comments on Hacker News. Is there any Nuclear Power Plant near the city or surrounding you live at least 50 miles away they say is the safest to live. This is probably not a question you're asked all that often. Ask HN: Why is there no modern successor to the 3D Pinball games of yesteryear? 16 by eigenvalue | 13 comments on Hacker News. I recall games like Full Tilt! Pinball and the 3D pinball game included in Windows were pretty popular and good showcases for the speed and quality of computer graphics back in the 90s. Then it occured to me that modern GPUs like the nVidia 4090 would be incredible for simulating a pinball machine with insane fidelity using RTX ray tracing and the optimized physics simulator (PhysX) they have. You could probably end up with something that truly looks and feels like the real thing. I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but after doing a quick search on Steam, I don't see anything like that on the market. Why do you think that is? Would it really be so hard to do? Wouldn't that be popular? I know I'd love to see it just because it would be such a great showcase for the power of modern machines, especially the integration of super realistic ph

I've worked at a lot of different companies and I've mostly not enjoyed the career. At this point I think it's prudent to give up on churning through companies looking for a good fit, and consider more radical changes. Has anyone done it, or know how it might go from personal experience? What would be the actual steps involved?

Next.js v13 websites are a heaven for scraping 5 by punkpeye | 0 comments on Hacker News. Just a random thought while analyzing some Next.js v13 website HTML markup. Due to the way that RSC hydrates elements during client-side rendering, Next.js has to provide all their property data using JSON (see this issue https://ift.tt/bzu9Es0) As a result, any website that uses Next.js with RSC is extremely easy to extract data from since you can tap into JSON of every element. Just an interesting observation without implying whether it is good or bad for the ecosystem.

Quick background: Grew up in an immigrant household with very little in the way of resources, guidance, encouragement. Was enamored by Silicon Valley and tech from a young age, but foolishly followed the family tradition of medicine despite hating it as I felt I had no choice. Went to medical school, dropped out, worked a few odd end gigs for the next couple years, stumbled into a PM role that I was let go from due to performance. I am now 37 without an impressive educational or professional background, no network of colleagues, no mastery in any one skill, and a whole lot of mental health debt. And yet the child inside of me still wants to pursue the scrappy Silicon Valley tech dream. Am I deluded? Where do I even begin?

Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus? 3 by actinium226 | 0 comments on Hacker News. As far as I can tell, there's no universally accepted "cure" for tinnitus, but there are a number of "therapies" out there, some of which seem to prey upon people looking for relief but some of which seem plausible. I'm wondering if any subscribers here have had tinnitus and experience permanent relief from the ringing? Not just reduction, but actual permanent relief that never comes back even when doing things that previously worsened the tinnitus. If you can't tell, I'm trying to establish an "existence proof" here, if no one has ever gotten permanent relief then it seems like it might not be worth bothering with the "symptom reduction" therapies since they would most likely lead to focusing on the symptoms more intensely.

Ask HN: What's the big deal with Go (Golang)? 4 by coreyp_1 | 3 comments on Hacker News. Looking to the wisdom of the masses here, and trying to understand the use case for Go (as opposed to other languages). I have heard that it has faster compile times. I have heard that it's low-level. But I don't get why I should choose it over a language that I enjoy, such as C++ (for low-level control, particularly the modern incarnations of it). Can you help me to understand what the killer feature of Go is and under what circumstances I should consider using it? Likewise, what would be a poor application of the language? (Context: I'm not necessarily a language snob. I use C++, Python, JavaScript, Java, etc., and I know which I prefer for solving particular types of problems. I just don't understand why I might need Go. There's a longer story as to why I'm so concerned about using it or not, but that is for another time.) Thanks for your comments!

I'm very familiar with git, but many of my coworkers are not primarily software developers and only know the basic commit/push/branch workflow, and delete/re-download the repo whenever something goes wrong. I have been given the opportunity to recommend a training course for everyone (less than a dozen individuals) to go through to get them up to speed with git. While I know of fantastic self-guided options like Git Immersion and Pro Git, I want to make sure I recommend one that looks good on paper to management. I imagine they would prefer something with completion verification, like a quiz or exam. If anyone has been in a similar situation, or has a recommendation for a course like this, I would greatly appreciate some guidance.

As a consequence, this issue has been in the back of my mind (and potentially the front of my sub-conscious) ever since. I've gradually shifted as far away from management positions as possible, and tried to avoid roles at work that would require me to speak or perform in any nature. I'm terrified of panic arising mid-speech, turning me into a wreck before any presentations. This has begun to spill over into social events, parties, networking meetups, or anything else remotely performative in nature. The worst part about this is that I was actually quite a natural speaker prio

Ask HN: GPT-4 has 1.7T parameters. What's a parameter? 6 by herodoturtle | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi folks, AI newbie here. Can those of you that are well versed in AI please help me understand what exactly constitutes a parameter? I often see LLMs being compared / ranked based on their number of parameters, so I'm hoping to better understand this metric. I have a rudimentary understanding of artificial neural networks (in terms of inputs -> functions -> outputs), and by extension, a very basic understanding of deep learning. But when it comes to defining a parameter, my google searches thus far have led me to concepts such as 'AI model behaviour' and 'adjustable settings' which, whilst interesting, are still too complex for me to distil into simple terms. If I were to explain what a parameter is to my child, what might I say? Thanks!

Ask HN: Has MeetUp.org been replaced by anything? 35 by syedkarim | 11 comments on Hacker News. In ~2015 when I was living in Chicago and frequently traveling, I could reliably find something interesting to do through Meetup.org. It seems that that are far fewer things being listed now. Are there really fewer things being organized in general or have people gravitated to another site/app?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: My Meta ads account was hacked – Is my only option to sue?

Ask HN: My Meta ads account was hacked – Is my only option to sue? 5 by nckishtp | 4 comments on Hacker News. I'm at a loss and I need advice. Hackers took control of an FB account of freelancer who was helping me run my ads, and ran a "Wine Course" for $21,000. I'm a small business, and now it's been 177 days and I've been back and forth with meta requesting updates probably 50 separate times. Finally today they said "Based on our initial investigation, we don’t believe there is evidence to suggest there was a compromise on Business Manager ID...". I'm at a loss. $21k just gone. Citibank denied my dispute. If you look at my Meta account this is the most obvious hack / steal ever, I can't imagine a judge wouldn't find in my favor. I don't know what to do. I'm just sad and at a loss. Any advice would be appreciated.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Paid for X Premium and still no access

Ask HN: Paid for X Premium and still no access 3 by vclouder | 5 comments on Hacker News. It is the oddest thing, and I wonder if others have encountered this issue. I paid for X premium on Sept 7 and still have no access to the features or blue checkmark. I have opened several tickets with X support and I get the same canned replies, "Thanks for reaching out about the missing blue features. We are aware of this issue and understand how frustrating this might be. Our team is working to resolve this." but the tickets never stay open. There is no way to get my money back, as I understand it. Anyone else had a similar issue or suggest a way to get this moving?

Ask HN: Why are some companies still trying to force return to office? 5 by chandler767 | 12 comments on Hacker News. Seems like the consensus is that you can do just fine (if not better) if your employees are remote. So why are some companies still trying to force workers back to the office knowing many would rather quit?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Delayed open source licensing / “eventually open” examples?

Ask HN: Delayed open source licensing / “eventually open” examples? 3 by schoen | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi! I'm working on a project with the Open Source Initiative and Open Tech Strategies which is collecting historical examples of "delayed open source licensing". This refers to licensing of software projects that were not initially free/open source when released, but became so on a (pre-planned and pre-announced) delay. For instance, a software developer might initially publish a project as proprietary or "open core" but announce that improvements will be relicensed Apache or GPL with a 1 or 2-year delay. There are dozens of projects that have pursued versions of this licensing strategy and several different license texts used to implement it (such as the Transitive Grace Period Public License/Bootstrap Open Source License, and the Business Source License). Can you help us identify more? You can see ones that we know about already at https://ift.tt/6so

Ask HN: Should I Keep the “Co-Founder? Seeking Co-Founder?” Posts? 3 by kidsil | 1 comments on Hacker News. This month marks a time for a check-up: Should I continue posting the "Co-Founder? Seeking Co-Founder?" threads? After a conversation with dang last month, the path forward remains unclear. To date, these threads have assisted 44 founders in connecting with potential co-founders, which is pretty meaningful impact in my book. Your thoughts? Open for discussion.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Are we upon the convergence of Apache, Nginx and “other”?

Ask HN: Are we upon the convergence of Apache, Nginx and “other”? 3 by httbs | 3 comments on Hacker News. Common wisdom suggests that there are two major web servers: Apache (losing popularity) and Nginx (gaining popularity). However, a look at the latest trends[1] suggests that we are upon the age of a "triple convergence" in popularity between Apache, Nginx, and the mysterious "other" category. Which leads to the logical questions: What is the "other" category? How did it become so big? And does it threaten the rule of the Spartan Apachinexology? [1]: https://ift.tt/8EqIpS5

New ask Hacker News story: OpenAI won the LLM DevOps–Every other player has to follow their standards now

OpenAI won the LLM DevOps–Every other player has to follow their standards now 2 by behnamoh | 0 comments on Hacker News. There are already numerous drop-in replacements for OpenAI's API, meaning that even if you use Anthropic's models, you're more likely to use OpenAI's API call syntax. OAI also introduced ChatML. We already see how deviating from this causes problems for other LLMs. For example, Llama 2 uses [INS]...[/INS] for chats, which is unintuitive and likely to change in the future. OAI also introduced function calling. Other LLMs have to follow OpenAI's function schema now.

Ask HN: How do I code offline for a week? 3 by lucasknight | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm going to be going to the middle of nowhere for a couple of weeks, and there's going to be no internet there. I design with Figma and I code in React Native/ReactJS. How can I build something or learn a skill with no internet to make sure I'm productive over this time?

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Flask and Quart have now partially merged

Tell HN: Flask and Quart have now partially merged 6 by pgjones | 3 comments on Hacker News. Flask is a web microframework built to be used with WSGI servers and synchronous code. Quart is the same web microframework built to be used with ASGI servers and asynchronous code. In other words Flask and Quart are now the same base framework as they share the majority of their codebases. This means that you can use the same framework API and understanding to write synchronous code with Flask, and asynchronous code with Quart. It is important to note that Flask cannot be made asynchronous without breaking extension and backwards compatibility, or without using monkeypatching. Therefore, Quart is best viewed as a namespace for async/await usages. Questions and comments very welcome. (I'm struggling a little thinking about how best to communicate this)

New ask Hacker News story: In macOS 14, Apple removed two "easter eggs"

In macOS 14, Apple removed two "easter eggs" 6 by Bondi_Blue | 0 comments on Hacker News. While the 4.4BSD Calendar program is still included, they removed the data directory at /usr/share/calendar which previously included some fun "easter egg" text files including calendar.birthday, calendar.history, calendar.lotr, and calendar.music. If you happen to care you can restore the files in this repository into /usr/local/share/calendar: https://ift.tt/19WCEGK They also removed the "Puff of Smoke" animation that was still present through macOS Ventura whenever dragging items off of application toolbars to remove them. It is notably deprecated here: https://ift.tt/UQS4lqw

New ask Hacker News story: How do HN users go about meeting significant others?

How do HN users go about meeting significant others? 4 by sorwin | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am curious how other HN members go about finding their significant others. I have little time these days, but I want to make the best of it trying to find someone, but social dating apps seems to fall short. Time commitment is not an issue, but having to swift through endless potential matches is time consuming to the point where it does feel like it's hopeless.
