Ask HN: How to secure hardware? any existing solutions?

I want to prevent counterfeit hardware from being used in a machine. The solution should be stand-alone,so independent from the existence of a network. I have a vague idea, but I'm not sure. You could have one microcontroller on each side exchanging encrypted messages over rfid, for instance. How would I approach this? Do solutions already exist? I am by no means a security expert.
