How did you find product market fit? 5 by warthog | 0 comments on Hacker News. Talking to fellow founders whenever I can as a pre PMF startup founder. The stories are wildly different than those I read or hear about on podcasts, blogposts and newsletters. HN mostly being anon, I thought it would be an ideal place to share how you found PMF as a service to other startups and founders. Whether you are a 1 person company or 1,000, it does not really matter

Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice 7 by poncho_romero | 9 comments on Hacker News. We are a 4 person company, that makes a web app I'll call Star . Today, Star is 11 years old and showing its age. It was developed entirely by one of the founders, who has no formal training, and the niche industry we serve has changed greatly in the last decade, rendering many of our core abstractions obsolete. In theory, Star follows MVC, but in practice there is no coherent architecture. Most of the functionality is tied up in 10k+ line controllers, which use an outdated framework full of magic. Due to a trend of centralization in the industry, our database design (focused on local markets) is entirely orthogonal to our customer's needs. We are also stuck on outdated technologies that no longer receive security updates. Although our existing platform is in bad shape, I would have been wary to rewrite (due to stories of Netscape et al), but the de

Ask HN: Kagi Worth It? 4 by travisgriggs | 3 comments on Hacker News. Are you paying, or have you paid, for Kagi? Curious what others experience has been to date. If you didn't keep at it, why? If you're loving it still, why? And which level? Based on some comments here on HN, I've been playing with both Kagi and Orion. I've found the searches on Kagi (for tech stuff) as good as google at least. Better than DDG and Brave of late. The internet content just honestly feels like it's decaying. As for Orion, it's decent on MacOS, but really buggy on iOS, where I've reverted to Brave.

New ask Hacker News story: Is 3D printing being held back by an invalid patent?

Is 3D printing being held back by an invalid patent? 7 by K0balt | 0 comments on Hacker News. Parts made using the FFM (FDM) process are stronger in some directions than in others. This is due to imperfect adhesion between printed layers. This directional or anisotropic structural strength is a significant limiting factor for the structural integrity of 3d printed parts made with the common FFM process. A method to drastically reduce this effect is described in an expired Stratasys patent, US1997/5653925A. As of this writing, I have not seen this feature implemented in any of the common open-source slicers. I would have expected this now-public-domain knowledge to have made its way into the slicers we use since the patent expired in 2017. With some investigation, I believe this may be because of the 2023 patent US2023/11813789B2, to my knowledge only implemented as a proprietary in-house product of a 3d printing service house which appears to make the same claims illustrated in the

Adding to the wonderful thread here: https://ift.tt/Gh1lq4v Wonder what kind of software do you use that has proven to improve your life for the better. Any price range counts. I'll go first: - Bitwarden - password manager ($10+ bucks a year and free for basic use) - pretty much a no-brainer - Google photos - my iCloud gets full so I sync and cleanup my storage by pushing all my photos to store and maintain (approx. $30 a year) - Apple One (music, arcade, icloud, tv) - shared with my wife, we are not bit on TV but having all of this in one plan is a great value ($25/month) - Alpha progression - my go to generated workout app, flexible, easy and has all the customization for various equipment. The founders are nice and also giving out free trials and extension ($100/year) - Macrofactor - my calorie counter with evaluations on my diet plans. This is MyFitness pal on steroids that act

New ask Hacker News story: Verbalize – text editor with writing assistance for Brazilian Portuguese

Verbalize – text editor with writing assistance for Brazilian Portuguese 6 by mtgr18977 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm a linguist and technical writer (tech writer, dev writer, documenter, technical editor, etc.) and I've always used Hemingway for my English writing. The problem was that I'd never found a text editor capable of suggesting possible improvements to a text in Brazilian Portuguese. Years passed, and this week I had time to create a fork of [Techscriptor](https://ift.tt/28gRYLd) with some interface improvements and adapt it to Brazilian Portuguese. That's how version 0.1 of Verbalize was born. ## What does it do? In a basic and summarised way, you can upload a file from your computer (in `md` or `txt`, for now) and the editor, besides allowing you to actually edit, will give you hints on how to improve the text (long sentences, complex words, jargon, adjectives and other things we should avoid in texts, especially technical ones). Once edited, you can d

Ask HN: Why does news.Y Combinator.com use a DNS TTL of 1s? 4 by 500ktc | 2 comments on Hacker News. This result in every page load making a DNS request. This is a questionable technical choice, especially considering HN's status as the SaaS mecca. So it begs the question: Why? If the goal is to be able to rapidly switch to cloudflare when under attack then surely a TTL of 600 or 60 would be sufficient whilst being more respectful of your visitors?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Apple like integration between iPhone/Android and Linux

Ask HN: Apple like integration between iPhone/Android and Linux 2 by whatarethembits | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, from your own experience, has the experience of integrating your phone (iPhone and Android both) with Linux improved in the last 4 years? Specifically copy/pasting seamlessly and transferring files. I use these features 10+ times a day for work and kinda non-negotiable. Before I moved to Apple ecosystem, I used PushBullet and it was a pain, Apple's integration is much better in terms of friction. I'd also tried KDEConnect, but found it to be extremely flaky. I'm due to upgrade my MacBook and can't help but feel like a fool for agreeing to being fleeced for Apple's memory and storage nonsense, even if affordability is not an issue. Also I'd like to not depend on one company so much. My only reservation is phone integration story on Linux; is it possible to get it close to Apple's version? I don't mind putting in the work to set thing

New ask Hacker News story: Can AI Take over VC Associates' Jobs by Screening Companies?

Can AI Take over VC Associates' Jobs by Screening Companies? 4 by bfein2313 | 1 comments on Hacker News. With AI now capable of analyzing pitch decks, predicting outcomes, and comparing startups based on key metrics, it's fair to wonder if it could replace some of the early-stage work traditionally handled by VC associates. This technology could streamline the screening process, offering quicker, data-driven insights that potentially reduce human bias and speed up deal flow. But is this enough to replace the nuanced judgment and intuition that associates bring to the table? Or will AI simply assist by handling the repetitive tasks, freeing up associates to focus on more strategic, relationship-driven aspects of the job? Curious to hear where people think this trend is headed. I have been doing customer and market research for my startup, Evala.ai, and am very interested to hear others thoughts.

New ask Hacker News story: Is this an idea worth pursuing or not?

Is this an idea worth pursuing or not? 2 by nyclawyer | 5 comments on Hacker News. The social scene in big cities like New York or LA can be daunting. Drinks are expensive, places can be crowded, lines long and the service sucks. So I was thinking, what if you have a platform that enables people to turn ordinary private spaces such as their home (or really anywhere) into social settings? For instance, turn your apartment into a bar with 4 tables and guests can reserve a spot (either with a group of friends or to hang out with strangers) by paying an admission fee (will be byob to avoid liquor license issues). This concept can be applied to different social settings such as hosting a mom’s night for other moms with kid care included, hosting a mediterranean dinner party, hosting a games night etc. The platform would enable guests to see what events are happening in their immediate vicinity / or a particular location on a specific date and reserve spots at various events they want to

Any Indiehackers.com Alternatives 4 by wuliwong | 0 comments on Hacker News. I loved Indie Hackers when it first came out. I'm someone that is always building a side project with hopes of it becoming a legit business. There was a previous website that was really new and had a fun community, I can't remember the name now but I met someone on their and we built a site together and still are in touch to this day. I'm in the US and he is in Latvia. My experience with IH over the last couple years has been poor. Posts get no interaction and the it feels like the focus has moved away from actual indiehackers generating the content through their work and questions. I get that this site has to generate revenue to survive, hopefully they figure it out. Just wondering if anyone else knows of communities for fellow "startup hackers." Maybe the lesson for me is that i just want something like a sub reddit and that's probably where I should look. The idea in general is

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: ADHD and Entrepreneurship

Ask HN: ADHD and Entrepreneurship 2 by romeros | 0 comments on Hacker News. Working for others just hasn’t worked out for me. Over the past decade, I’ve tried to ignore my urge to market my side projects and build a business around them, choosing instead to focus on what seemed like the "right" path—a steady 9-to-5 job. I even tried medication, but my output still doesn’t match others’. My working memory isn’t strong, and my thought processes often feel out of sync with the usual approach, which has created challenges. I can solve complex problems, but my way of doing things is distinct from others’. I got lucky with an investment and made a few quick millions. I am thinking of taking a year off and just focus on my side project and see if it makes any money. I already have a virtual personal assistant who helped me keep my job. Just wondering if ADHD will throw a wrench in my Entrepreneurial aspirations as well.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Navigating AI Tooling Choices

Ask HN: Navigating AI Tooling Choices 2 by atif089 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm currently using ChatGPT Plus and developing with GPT-4o-mini (Continue for VS Code), which costs me around $25 a month. However, I'm considering switching to Claude, as I'm aware that AI tools can evolve rapidly, and ChatGPT might improve again in the future. I'm also frustrated with the cumulative costs of AI tools — $20 for Cursor, $20 for the GPT API, and $20 for ChatGPT. Are there any recommendations for managing these costs while still accessing high-quality AI tools? Is it worth switching to Claude now, or should I stick with ChatGPT for the time being? Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Ask HN: Why are social media spam bots still a thing? 3 by Avalaxy | 3 comments on Hacker News. Specifically Instagram. After many years, I still get regular messages from spam bots, usually pretending to be women that are romantically interested. It seems trivial to ban (or even prevent) those accounts, from a technical perspective. Reporting them also doesn't seem to do much. Why is this still a thing? This should have been a solved problem years ago no? Are there, besides technical reasons, other reasons to keep spam bots alive on their platforms?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Are There Any Fully-Documented Computers

Ask HN: Are There Any Fully-Documented Computers 5 by linguae | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am writing an operating system as a side project. I am still in the design phase of the project, and I’ve been brushing up on my low-level programming skills. Recently there was a discussion here about the Asahi Linux team’s efforts reverse-engineering ARM Macs, and it had me thinking: are there any fully-documented modern computers? I know that RISC-V and POWER are open source. However, there are still other parts of a computer system to consider, such as boot firmware, buses, disk controllers, GPUs, networking devices, USB, etc. It would be cool to target fully-documented hardware for my OS project, but I don’t know if there are any complete stacks of fully-documented hardware.

Ask HN: Elderly Friendly Photo Printing Sites? 2 by jerrac | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey, just a shot in the dark, but does anyone know of any good photo product sites, like Shutterfly, that have user interfaces that are elderly friendly? My mother likes to get cards and other things using her photos, but she is continually having horrible experiences with the sites she's tried. And every time I go to help, I find UI's that are just not well designed. Sometimes I have to switch her over to Chrome, other times nothing makes it better. Today, Walmart's site wouldn't even let me try to log her into her account in Chrome, just kept showing me "are you human" pages. And in Firefox, their photo app is clearly not working very well. The preview for the Christmas card was tiny until I switched her system font size from 150% to 100% scaling. Then it got bigger. And Firefox console was full of security warnings. Shutterfly is not very good either, she consistently

Ask HN: Impossible to get a refund from Pieter Levels? 8 by Holzlappen | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am a resident of Germany. Which means according to the EU’s Consumer Rights Directive (Directive 2011/83/EU) I have the right to a refund within 14 days of the purchase of digital goods and services. I recently bought a PhotoAI subscription. I wanted to buy a a 1 month subscription but I didn’t understand that it would charge me for a whole year. I am not a native speaker and to me the design and text was quite misleading. It says 9$ per month, and next to it, in a much smaller font „6 months free billed yearly“. I am not a native speaker and assumed that means that I get 6 months for free if I buy a yearly plan instead. I realized just after the payment was completed that I got charged for 99$ instead of 9$. I decided to not use any feature of the site, hoping to get a refund. In the TOS is written that photoai doesn’t give refunds due to the costs of AI picture generation. Well, I

Discord/Messenger Alternative Wishlist? 3 by namrog84 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I have been interested in starting a hobby project that could one day maybe become something more. I've been considering a Discord alternative as 1 possibility of a project and to do a few things differently. MS Teams and Slack still seem more business oriented still. I have heard of Revolt but it feels like it's going just direct Discord Alternative, and not trying to change it up too much, at least not yet. What features would you consider a worthwhile differentiator instead of doing 'more of the same' that discord wouldn't likely ever do? Obviously, aside from all the standard-esque things from text to voice, etc.. The few features that could make a discord alt more compelling of a platform. 1. Ask HN: Best Tools for High Availability PostgreSQL? 3 by cloudnewbie | 0 comments on Hacker News. PostgreSQL has lots of different tools available for replication, though in various states of support and maintenance. What are your current recommendations for a small-scale Postgres cluster (e.g. 3 node on modest VMs)? My use case is a relatively standard web app with database backend. One write master is fine, but it should have automatic failover if the primary is unavailable. As a solo dev, I'd like to avoid the overhead that comes with tools like Kubernetes, if there are suitable alternatives.
