New ask Hacker News story: Fucking Tired of AI

Fucking Tired of AI 13 by akaTrickster | 1 comments on Hacker News. Title. I really wish we could turn back time to 2022 when ChatGPT and GitHub copilot were being dropped and stopped the bomb then. Everywhere I go online now is populated by a mass infestation of AI trash of variying degree; can we or will we ever get back our fun tech discussion online without bullshit ads or bots or any of this novo-dystopian nonsense? I am specially worried about new programers and internet users being bombarded with tons of AI-written books, pornography, music, video, audio, images. And if you think it isn't bad, try googling any historical figure and you'll find some bullshit AI generated image of them likely before the actual one. What do we do? Do we just create new social media platforms and blogs (IRC again?) that are so heavily filtered / censored such that no AI content is ever tolerated? Do we do the Sam Altman thing and try scanning a billion eyeballs as 'proof of human'...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to pitch an idea without the risk of idea theft

Ask HN: How to pitch an idea without the risk of idea theft 3 by wseqyrku | 3 comments on Hacker News. The conversation might go like this: - (the idea) manager: we have/had a project with 80% overlap, this is nothing new. The manager goes ahead and add it to the backlog and no credit is given. Easy peasy. (the second part may not happen publicly or immediately, rather, the project would seem to be dismissed or postponed)

Ask HN: Best practices to control LLM responses with user queries? 2 by cloudking | 1 comments on Hacker News. How do you control LLM output in your applications? Is it just a matter of a well-crafted system prompt or are there any other techniques? I'm building a query based UX and I specifically want to make sure users cannot inject their own instructions into queries that would steer the LLM away from it's intended purpose.

Ask HN: Can I download Torrent of a movie legally if I own the DVD/Blueray? 4 by punnerud | 11 comments on Hacker News. I more and more often find that I pay for movies I already own, because it’s easier with streaming services. Can I legally download it as long as I already own it? That way I could make it more accessible within the house for my kids and myself. And could I take it one step further and make a service where user have to insert their DVD into external drive, then only use a couple of seconds for verification and then activate Torrent download of the same, without lengthy copy process. If that is legal take it one more step and let the user hand in their DVD for external storage, for a “physical” key (Bitcoin, Ethereum etc) as proof of ownership.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Can anyone give me a good reference on the Aaron Swartz case?

Ask HN: Can anyone give me a good reference on the Aaron Swartz case? 4 by zusammen | 5 comments on Hacker News. I’m part of a project that is trying to understand social dynamics of online communities during the first two decades of this century, including the shift from the written word to image media. I’d like to include a chapter on Aaron and the ethical issues he exposed, because I think they connect to a lot of the issues we’re saying today. 1. What online communities was he most active in? Reddit, obviously, but others? 2. My understanding is that he had the opportunity to take 6 months but would have to keep the felony, which is why he didn’t take the deal. Is this true? If so, why didn’t he feel that he couldn’t trust Reddit’s management and investors to protect his career? 3. What were his personal opinions, as far as we know, on the most desirable future path for technology?

Is it me or is Reddit mostly bots now? 12 by rizs12 | 14 comments on Hacker News. A lot of the comments I am seeing under posts seem just a bit off. I am considering whether being on Reddit is worth it anymore? It doesn't have the same human-seeming environment it had 5+ years ago. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a Reddit alternative? Lemmy doesn't have the same number of diverse users that Reddit had during its pomp (it's mostly just Linux fans and technical people), and I do quite like the network effects of a diverse audience.

Ask HN: As a parent how do you respond to kids school results? 3 by andrewstuart | 4 comments on Hacker News. Your kids school results come in and you talk to them. What do you say? What if the results are less than you think they’re capable of or hoped for? What do you say about a B if they mostly get A’s? What do you say about C’s or lower? I always get in trouble for what I say and now maybe I think the safest path is to always see the positive though I fall back to raising it if I think they could have done better then I’m told all I do is focus on the negative and ignore all the great results. What do you say to your kids school results?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How Do You Psychologically Manage Being Thrown Around as an IC?

Ask HN: How Do You Psychologically Manage Being Thrown Around as an IC? 5 by thwwaway8282111 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've been through a few med and small fast growing companies companies. I always find eventually the need for "fast" causes priorities to make whiplash turns constantly. As an IC I find it frustrating because I usually need a bit of ramp up time to understand what I'm doing and then invest a lot of time into working on something before being picked up and thrown into a different direction. Sometimes the directional change then being a 180 back to what you're doing, and you think to yourself "I just wasted a day investigating something for nothing". I'm starting to notice signs of burn out in myself. What do you do to manage this? I know boundaries at work help, but in the 8 hours that you're in the madness what do you do?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is Gmail's unsubscribe feature safe?

Ask HN: Is Gmail's unsubscribe feature safe? 3 by usbsea | 0 comments on Hacker News. Got a spam email today. It had an unsubscribe link pointing to a random Azure blob. I click "Mark as Spam" and it offers me to unsubscribe instead? This was worring as I thought ... well the unsubscribe is a dangerous link so how will it do it. Turns out it uses a header like X-Unsubscribe-Web. I checked what that was set to, and in this spam it was a well known online newspaper plus a bogus query string. So they probably put a plausible link (i.e. not a black list) to fool Google. But in general X-Unsubscribe-Web could be set to something malicious, right? And why is Google even discouraging me from reporting spam (or in this case... phishing). Edit: I see there is now a report Phishing and that button treats me like an adult :-)

I recently became a dad and only now I realize how difficult it is to gather the right information about anything related to the baby (from breast feeding, feeding issues, sleep, etc - to potential depression and hormone issues for the mother, etc). New ask Hacker News story: Did Claude's quality drop recently?

Did Claude's quality drop recently? 8 by MeetingsBrowser | 2 comments on Hacker News. At least subjectively, Claude has been outperforming other LLMs for me for a while. They seemed to be having significant availability issues this week. As of this morning things are working for me but the quality of the responses seems to be much worse. I frequently ask for lists of ideas and then drill down in follow up prompts. Today Claude keeps responding to my request for bulleted lists with something like, “I should not use lists unless explicitly requested and should instead write in paragraphs”, and then responds in paragraphs. Is anyone else having a similar experience?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What is your RP 2040 development environment?

Ask HN: What is your RP 2040 development environment? 4 by AstroJetson | 1 comments on Hacker News. There are a ton of RP2040 boards out there and I expect a new wave of the RP2350 boards any day now. My current favorite board is this https://ift.tt/qdWa1vs since it has JST/SH connectors to add things vs a protoboard. What are your development environments? I work with students ages 12 and under, so I try to keep things simple. I do Circuit Python since I bought into that ecosystem with Adafruit awhile ago. Micropython is also a good environment. I recently stumbled across the MaxiMite Basic. I had these boards a long time ago, and it was cool to see the port to the RP2040. https://ift.tt/RdDVTFz There is a neat editor that made MixMite basic easy to write that also works with the RP2040 port. I'm also a Lua fan, there is a nice port of Lua, https://ift.tt/jGZczpO Lastly, Forth was one of the early languages I learned for the 8008/8080 family. The Mecrisp-Stellaris Port is nice,...

New ask Hacker News story: Amazon won't accept written communication

Amazon won't accept written communication 37 by ccleve | 21 comments on Hacker News. We had a bad time with Amazon yesterday, and I can't reach them to tell them about it. Without getting into details, an Amazon delivery driver did a bad thing on our property, which we only discovered this morning when a neighbor brought it to our attention. I attempted to write to Amazon, but apparently they no longer accept email at cs-reply@amazon.com, there is no way to post a support ticket, they no longer have chat, and they make it very, very difficult to find a customer service phone number. No, none of their automated support options applied to this particular situation. Through Googling, I found 1-888-280-4331, the customer service number, but for obvious legal reasons I need to send them a written account of what happened, so I have a record that they were notified. Short of filing a lawsuit and serving them with a complaint, how do I reach these people? And more generally, when a...

New ask Hacker News story: Do you have any suggestions on RSS readers?

Do you have any suggestions on RSS readers? 3 by Yawrehto | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've been trying to find a good one, but many of the features I want are not written down somewhere. In roughly decreasing order of priority, I'd like something: * That doesn't automatically delete the items in your feed, either because you have too many or because it's been too long. Alternately, it could be set ridiculously high (by quick estimates, if it can handle 1 million items, that's enough to deal with 250 new items, every single day, for 10 years, so I'd say that would be high enough, and quite frankly, if I run up against that limit, I can probably delete some). * Free, but that seems fairly incompatible with the first thing. Self-hosted, possibly? * That has some relatively easy way of bypassing paywalls. * That allows for manual tags (not just folders, because things can generally only go in one folder) of either feeds or articles. * That seems relatively stabl...

Tyler Cowen just published his best non-fiction books of 2024 list on Marginal Revolution: https://ift.tt/IpbRfLJ The best non-fiction books I have read this year are: "Six Pillars of Self-Esteem" by Nathaniel Branden - Interesting insights into the concept of self-esteem and how it is influenced by the wider world "The Code Book" by Simon Singh - An oldie but saw it recommended last year on HN and found it to be a fascinating look at the history of cryptography, written in an engaging and approachable way "Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Essential Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger" by Charles T. Munger - After Charlie's unfortunate passing, I read this again. So much life wisdom on every page What's the best non-fiction book you read in 2024?

New ask Hacker News story: Our SaaS hit 50 paying subscribers today. Here's how we did it with $0:

Our SaaS hit 50 paying subscribers today. Here's how we did it with $0: 4 by davidheikka | 1 comments on Hacker News. I will get to the marketing part, but first we needed an actual good product. Else marketing won’t work. Here’s the 4 step approach we followed for building something people wanted: 1. We started by validating our idea before building anything at all. 2. Once we got a green check on that, we built an MVP fast. 3. Then we launched the MVP, got our initial users through content marketing which validated the project further. 4. At this point we built the full product. Going to market is a lot easier when you know you have a validated product. Our first marketing move was to launch on Product Hunt. We had heard some skepticism around Product Hunt launches so we didn’t expect much but here’s what happened: - Before launching we had 0 paying subscribers. - On the evening of our launch day we got our first paying subscriber. - One week later we had 20. Definitely a succ...

Ask HN: FontAwesome makes it impossible to downgrade. Any alternatives? 3 by dk8996 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I've been using and supporting FontAwesome for over 10 years, including paying for licenses to support the great work they do. However, their sales tactics have become quite frustrating. I encountered an issue where I couldn't downgrade from Pro Max to Pro, despite their plan page stating: "If you just need icons for a web project, our online-only Pro Lite plan is a good choice. If you’re not sure, our Pro Plan is a good choice to start with, and don’t worry - it’s easy to change your plan." Does anyone know of good alternatives to FontAwesome?

New ask Hacker News story: Sandra AI (YC F24) – AI receptionist for car dealers

Sandra AI (YC F24) – AI receptionist for car dealers 2 by IsmailMajjad | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey Hacker News! We’re Badr, Ismail, and Skandere, co-founders of Sandra AI (https://ift.tt/BFigEx9). Sandra AI is the first multilingual voice AI receptionist built specifically for car dealerships. It handles both inbound and outbound calls, helping dealerships capture every customer opportunity while freeing up their staff to focus on in-person interactions and closing deals. Here’s a demo video: https://youtu.be/89BbgavAffQ Phones are still a critical channel for car dealerships, with around 80% of service appointments booked by phone. Yet, 30% of calls typically go unanswered, leading to lost revenue and frustrated customers. Traditional call centers are expensive, hard to scale, and often fail to meet demand. Delays and missed follow-ups frequently drive customers toward competitors. We designed Sandra AI to tackle these issues. Using multilingual voice AI, Sandra communicates n...

New ask Hacker News story: Documind ripped our open source tool and swapped the license

Documind ripped our open source tool and swapped the license 13 by themanmaran | 0 comments on Hacker News. Saw a ShowHN post [0] today about an open source document extractor tool. I thought the workflow sounded pretty similar to our library, and only to realize it's a direct rip of Zerox [1]. Looking through the code: 1. They removed the MIT License and added AGPL. 2. It's not a fork, they purposefully copied the code and did a find/replace to swap out Zerox for their name. 3. There is no attribution or mention of the original library. 4. They are trying to market this as a competitive product. If you inspect the source code, it's a verbatim copy. They literally just renamed the `ZeroxOutput` to `DocumindOutput` [2][3]. I recognize that plenty of people are using Zerox within commercial products, but to copy to copy the code and pitch it as your own open source product is pretty fraudulent. Especially slapping a copyleft license on it. [0] https://ift.tt/xn0uyNm [1] ht...

Ask HN: Recruiters, why do you repost jobs with 1000 applications a month later? 4 by charliebwrites | 3 comments on Hacker News. The majority of jobs on LinkedIn right now seem to be reposts of jobs from a month or two ago. Why would you repost a role vs just going through the 1000 applications you received last time? What is the reasoning there?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why hasn't the JavaScript event loop model scaled horizontally?

Ask HN: Why hasn't the JavaScript event loop model scaled horizontally? 2 by wkyleg | 0 comments on Hacker News. Right now, JavaScript scales well with a single-threaded event loop. Certainly not as fast as something like Go for async tasks, but enough to power much of the web and be easy to write. Why hasn't anyone abstracted the event loop model to scale across multiple machines or utilize modern processors? Perhaps with something more like an Actor model or Erlang's BEAM? It seems like just getting the JavaScript concurrency model as an abstraction over multicore or multi-machine concurrency would be one of the easiest ways to achieve this. I realize that this is still technically difficult, but programming tends towards "just porting things to JavaScript." I would love to have something like Phoenix framework, just built with JavaScript/TypeScript, and I can scale a back end by bumping size of a machine or scaling horizontally.

New ask Hacker News story: Architecture in Service of Humanity

Architecture in Service of Humanity 2 by BCatSB | 0 comments on Hacker News. How Social Brick Redefines Architecture for Humanity As a child, my first visit to my father’s hometown in Honduras changed the way I viewed the world. I saw a house built from mud and sticks—bajareque—a structure far removed from my comfortable life in the U.S. I thought, "This is poverty, lower than poverty in the U.S." That moment stayed with me, shaping my journey to become an architect. Over the years, my perspective shifted. I came to see bajareque not as a symbol of lack, but as an expression of cultural ingenuity. It’s this realization that inspired me to found Social Brick—a platform dedicated to connecting architectural expertise with communities that need it most. A Mother's Resilience: The Story Behind Social Brick On a recent visit to the same village, I met a single mother raising two children in a house made of sticks and mud. Folks, I seem to vaguely recall that such a thing exists and was wondering if I could... count on you all to help me locate it. Something that would enable volunteers, resources, locations to be managed efficiently in a (hopefully) single online platform that can be self-hosted with as meager resources as possible or alternatively, if such a thing exists, hosted by some third party. Something that would enable organizations also to register themselves in a CRM kind of capability, but one that ideally would have as many features as possible that would come in handy under extreme circumstances, earthquakes, floods, and the like. I am sure that somebody must have come up with some solution enabling a core set of features such as I am describing, or that at least best practi...

How did you find product market fit? 5 by warthog | 0 comments on Hacker News. Talking to fellow founders whenever I can as a pre PMF startup founder. The stories are wildly different than those I read or hear about on podcasts, blogposts and newsletters. HN mostly being anon, I thought it would be an ideal place to share how you found PMF as a service to other startups and founders. Whether you are a 1 person company or 1,000, it does not really matter

Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice 7 by poncho_romero | 9 comments on Hacker News. We are a 4 person company, that makes a web app I'll call Star . Today, Star is 11 years old and showing its age. It was developed entirely by one of the founders, who has no formal training, and the niche industry we serve has changed greatly in the last decade, rendering many of our core abstractions obsolete. In theory, Star follows MVC, but in practice there is no coherent architecture. Most of the functionality is tied up in 10k+ line controllers, which use an outdated framework full of magic. Due to a trend of centralization in the industry, our database design (focused on local markets) is entirely orthogonal to our customer's needs. We are also stuck on outdated technologies that no longer receive security updates. Although our existing platform is in bad shape, I would have been wary to rewrite (due to stories of Netscape et al), but the de...

Ask HN: Kagi Worth It? 4 by travisgriggs | 3 comments on Hacker News. Are you paying, or have you paid, for Kagi? Curious what others experience has been to date. If you didn't keep at it, why? If you're loving it still, why? And which level? Based on some comments here on HN, I've been playing with both Kagi and Orion. I've found the searches on Kagi (for tech stuff) as good as google at least. Better than DDG and Brave of late. The internet content just honestly feels like it's decaying. As for Orion, it's decent on MacOS, but really buggy on iOS, where I've reverted to Brave.

New ask Hacker News story: Is 3D printing being held back by an invalid patent?

Is 3D printing being held back by an invalid patent? 7 by K0balt | 0 comments on Hacker News. Parts made using the FFM (FDM) process are stronger in some directions than in others. This is due to imperfect adhesion between printed layers. This directional or anisotropic structural strength is a significant limiting factor for the structural integrity of 3d printed parts made with the common FFM process. A method to drastically reduce this effect is described in an expired Stratasys patent, US1997/5653925A. As of this writing, I have not seen this feature implemented in any of the common open-source slicers. I would have expected this now-public-domain knowledge to have made its way into the slicers we use since the patent expired in 2017. With some investigation, I believe this may be because of the 2023 patent US2023/11813789B2, to my knowledge only implemented as a proprietary in-house product of a 3d printing service house which appears to make the same claims illustrated in the ...

New ask Hacker News story: Verbalize – text editor with writing assistance for Brazilian Portuguese

Verbalize – text editor with writing assistance for Brazilian Portuguese 6 by mtgr18977 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm a linguist and technical writer (tech writer, dev writer, documenter, technical editor, etc.) and I've always used Hemingway for my English writing. The problem was that I'd never found a text editor capable of suggesting possible improvements to a text in Brazilian Portuguese. Years passed, and this week I had time to create a fork of [Techscriptor](https://ift.tt/28gRYLd) with some interface improvements and adapt it to Brazilian Portuguese. That's how version 0.1 of Verbalize was born. ## What does it do? In a basic and summarised way, you can upload a file from your computer (in `md` or `txt`, for now) and the editor, besides allowing you to actually edit, will give you hints on how to improve the text (long sentences, complex words, jargon, adjectives and other things we should avoid in texts, especially technical ones). Once edited, you can d...

Ask HN: Why does news.Y Combinator.com use a DNS TTL of 1s? 4 by 500ktc | 2 comments on Hacker News. This result in every page load making a DNS request. This is a questionable technical choice, especially considering HN's status as the SaaS mecca. So it begs the question: Why? Ask HN: Apple like integration between iPhone/Android and Linux 2 by whatarethembits | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, from your own experience, has the experience of integrating your phone (iPhone and Android both) with Linux improved in the last 4 years? Specifically copy/pasting seamlessly and transferring files. I use these features 10+ times a day for work and kinda non-negotiable. Before I moved to Apple ecosystem, I used PushBullet and it was a pain, Apple's integration is much better in terms of friction. I'd also tried KDEConnect, but found it to be extremely flaky. I'm due to upgrade my MacBook and can't help but feel like a fool for agreeing to being fleeced for Apple's memory and storage nonsense, even if affordability is not an issue. Also I'd like to not depend on one company so much. My only reservation is phone integration story on Linux; is it possible to get it close to Apple's version? I don't mind putting in the work to set thing...

New ask Hacker News story: Can AI Take over VC Associates' Jobs by Screening Companies?

Can AI Take over VC Associates' Jobs by Screening Companies? 4 by bfein2313 | 1 comments on Hacker News. With AI now capable of analyzing pitch decks, predicting outcomes, and comparing startups based on key metrics, it's fair to wonder if it could replace some of the early-stage work traditionally handled by VC associates. This technology could streamline the screening process, offering quicker, data-driven insights that potentially reduce human bias and speed up deal flow. But is this enough to replace the nuanced judgment and intuition that associates bring to the table? Or will AI simply assist by handling the repetitive tasks, freeing up associates to focus on more strategic, relationship-driven aspects of the job? Curious to hear where people think this trend is headed. I have been doing customer and market research for my startup, Evala.ai, and am very interested to hear others thoughts.

New ask Hacker News story: Is this an idea worth pursuing or not?

Is this an idea worth pursuing or not? 2 by nyclawyer | 5 comments on Hacker News. The social scene in big cities like New York or LA can be daunting. Drinks are expensive, places can be crowded, lines long and the service sucks. So I was thinking, what if you have a platform that enables people to turn ordinary private spaces such as their home (or really anywhere) into social settings? For instance, turn your apartment into a bar with 4 tables and guests can reserve a spot (either with a group of friends or to hang out with strangers) by paying an admission fee (will be byob to avoid liquor license issues). This concept can be applied to different social settings such as hosting a mom’s night for other moms with kid care included, hosting a mediterranean dinner party, hosting a games night etc. The platform would enable guests to see what events are happening in their immediate vicinity / or a particular location on a specific date and reserve spots at various events they want to ...

There was a previous website that was really new and had a fun community, I can't remember the name now but I met someone on their and we built a site together and still are in touch to this day. I'm in the US and he is in Latvia. My experience with IH over the last couple years has been poor. Posts get no interaction and the it feels like the focus has moved away from actual indiehackers generating the content through their work and questions. I get that this site has to generate revenue to survive, hopefully they figure it out. Just wondering if anyone else knows of communities for fellow "startup hackers." New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: ADHD and Entrepreneurship

Ask HN: ADHD and Entrepreneurship 2 by romeros | 0 comments on Hacker News. Working for others just hasn’t worked out for me. Over the past decade, I’ve tried to ignore my urge to market my side projects and build a business around them, choosing instead to focus on what seemed like the "right" path—a steady 9-to-5 job. I even tried medication, but my output still doesn’t match others’. My working memory isn’t strong, and my thought processes often feel out of sync with the usual approach, which has created challenges. I can solve complex problems, but my way of doing things is distinct from others’. I got lucky with an investment and made a few quick millions. I am thinking of taking a year off and just focus on my side project and see if it makes any money. I already have a virtual personal assistant who helped me keep my job. Just wondering if ADHD will throw a wrench in my Entrepreneurial aspirations as well.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Navigating AI Tooling Choices

Ask HN: Navigating AI Tooling Choices 2 by atif089 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm currently using ChatGPT Plus and developing with GPT-4o-mini (Continue for VS Code), which costs me around $25 a month. However, I'm considering switching to Claude, as I'm aware that AI tools can evolve rapidly, and ChatGPT might improve again in the future. I'm also frustrated with the cumulative costs of AI tools — $20 for Cursor, $20 for the GPT API, and $20 for ChatGPT. Are there any recommendations for managing these costs while still accessing high-quality AI tools? Is it worth switching to Claude now, or should I stick with ChatGPT for the time being? Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

It seems trivial to ban (or even prevent) those accounts, from a technical perspective. Reporting them also doesn't seem to do much. Why is this still a thing? This should have been a solved problem years ago no? Are there, besides technical reasons, other reasons to keep spam bots alive on their platforms?

Ask HN: Are There Any Fully-Documented Computers 5 by linguae | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am writing an operating system as a side project. I am still in the design phase of the project, and I’ve been brushing up on my low-level programming skills. Recently there was a discussion here about the Asahi Linux team’s efforts reverse-engineering ARM Macs, and it had me thinking: are there any fully-documented modern computers? I know that RISC-V and POWER are open source. However, there are still other parts of a computer system to consider, such as boot firmware, buses, disk controllers, GPUs, networking devices, USB, etc. It would be cool to target fully-documented hardware for my OS project, but I don’t know if there are any complete stacks of fully-documented hardware.

Ask HN: Elderly Friendly Photo Printing Sites? 2 by jerrac | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey, just a shot in the dark, but does anyone know of any good photo product sites, like Shutterfly, that have user interfaces that are elderly friendly? My mother likes to get cards and other things using her photos, but she is continually having horrible experiences with the sites she's tried. And every time I go to help, I find UI's that are just not well designed. Sometimes I have to switch her over to Chrome, other times nothing makes it better. Today, Walmart's site wouldn't even let me try to log her into her account in Chrome, just kept showing me "are you human" pages. And in Firefox, their photo app is clearly not working very well. The preview for the Christmas card was tiny until I switched her system font size from 150% to 100% scaling. Then it got bigger. And Firefox console was full of security warnings. Shutterfly is not very good either, she consistently...

Ask HN: Impossible to get a refund from Pieter Levels? 8 by Holzlappen | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am a resident of Germany. Which means according to the EU’s Consumer Rights Directive (Directive 2011/83/EU) I have the right to a refund within 14 days of the purchase of digital goods and services. I recently bought a PhotoAI subscription. I wanted to buy a a 1 month subscription but I didn’t understand that it would charge me for a whole year. I am not a native speaker and to me the design and text was quite misleading. It says 9$ per month, and next to it, in a much smaller font „6 months free billed yearly“. I am not a native speaker and assumed that means that I get 6 months for free if I buy a yearly plan instead. I realized just after the payment was completed that I got charged for 99$ instead of 9$. I decided to not use any feature of the site, hoping to get a refund. In the TOS is written that photoai doesn’t give refunds due to the costs of AI picture generation. Well, I...

Ask HN: Best Tools for High Availability PostgreSQL? 3 by cloudnewbie | 0 comments on Hacker News. PostgreSQL has lots of different tools available for replication, though in various states of support and maintenance. What are your current recommendations for a small-scale Postgres cluster (e.g. 3 node on modest VMs)? My use case is a relatively standard web app with database backend. One write master is fine, but it should have automatic failover if the primary is unavailable. As a solo dev, I'd like to avoid the overhead that comes with tools like Kubernetes, if there are suitable alternatives.
