New ask Hacker News story: Let's Map Halal Restaurants on OpenStreetMap (OSM)

Let's Map Halal Restaurants on OpenStreetMap (OSM) 5 by Muhammed_Yaseen | 1 comments on Hacker News. Assalamu Alaikum, fellow halal food enthusiasts! Have you ever struggled to find halal restaurants in your city or while traveling? I believe we can make this easier for everyone by mapping halal restaurants on OpenStreetMap (OSM) – a free and open-source platform that allows anyone to contribute and access geographic information. What is OpenStreetMap (OSM)? OSM is like the Wikipedia of maps. It’s created and maintained by a global community of contributors. You can add restaurants, cafes, and even grocery stores that serve halal food so that Muslims everywhere can benefit! Why Map Halal Restaurants? 1⃣ Help Muslims easily find halal food options. 2Create a centralized, global database accessible to everyone. How You Can Contribute: Visit OpenStreetMap and create an account. Add restaurants in your area that serve halal food (make sure to confirm their halal status). Use the tag...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why does US allow hard tech interview questions if it bans IQ tests?

Ask HN: Why does US allow hard tech interview questions if it bans IQ tests? 4 by amichail | 9 comments on Hacker News. Tech interviewers often claim that they ask difficult questions to gain insight into how candidates think and how they handle reaching their limits. However, this reasoning can sound like plausible deniability. How can you determine whether the real intent is to assess your IQ indirectly without explicitly administering an IQ test? And why does the US permit this practice to continue if IQ tests are banned? P.S. While IQ tests are not strictly banned in the US, using them opens up a company to potential lawsuits.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Has anyone built a tax simulation environment?

Ask HN: Has anyone built a tax simulation environment? 5 by JVillella | 0 comments on Hacker News. Was curious if anyone had attempted such endeavour. The use case I see is you input your finances (eg. money spread over different investments, in a business, multiple incomes, etc.) and your goal (purchase home that costs $x) and an optimizer will try different solutions (eg. sell these assets for this tax liability, take this mortgage at this rate, pay it in lump sums to be able to withdraw assets from your business as dividends spread over N years, etc.)

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What is your default notes app?

Ask HN: What is your default notes app? 3 by vednig | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm a google notes guy, but not particularly fan of it, I've tried out Samsung notes, apple notes, and few other android note taking apps. Hell, I even built one as a 17 y/o kid here https://ift.tt/wANjEWL but I've always wondered, what makes a notes app that can replace simple pen and paper, I know a simple app can't do that at least. I decided to rebuild it from scratch, one especially designed for the thinkers, developers, founders and engineers. Those who have the most on their mind but often fail at organizing the info. So, I'd like to know your perspective on a few questions 1. What is your notes app? and Why? 2. Do you still often find yourself using pen and paper? 3. What is your primary(and tested) setup for productivity? 4. Do you like to have things like tasks, broken down or as a singular big task? 5. How much of your notes originate from research on the web?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What is your Monitor setup?

Ask HN: What is your Monitor setup? 3 by GBiT | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m planning to upgrade my current monitor setup (Philips 271S, 27-inch 16:9, and LG 29UM68, 29-inch 21:9) and am considering a few models: - Dell UltraSharp 43 4K USB-C Hub Monitor (U4323QE) - Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor (U4924DW) - LG 45" UltraGear™ OLED (45GS96QB) I’m unsure if the 49" ultrawide would be comfortable for work, productivity and watching movies. Compared to the LG 45", which is taller, the LG might be better for coding and can fit three windows more easily. However, as a gaming monitor, the LG has a lower pixel density and I almost don't play. On the other hand, the Dell 43" offers better pixel density, but it has a lower refresh rate, and I’m not sure if it can comfortably fit three windows. What is your monitor setup, and what’s your experience?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Seeking Device to Normalize Audio Output for Consistent Volume Levels

Ask HN: Seeking Device to Normalize Audio Output for Consistent Volume Levels 2 by ghoomketu | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hello hn. I'm looking for a device that I can insert between the audio output and speaker to normalize the audio. The goal is to ensure that sudden loud noises don't become overwhelming and quieter parts sound reasonably the same. My reason for doing this is because it's so hard to watch movies these days because of the inconsistent volume levels (2x harder at night). Any suggestions or recommendations on specific products or solutions would be greatly appreciated! Any DIY suggestions are also welcome too.

New ask Hacker News story: Relocating for Tech Jobs in 2025

Relocating for Tech Jobs in 2025 4 by andrewstetsenko | 1 comments on Hacker News. Helping software engineers to relocate during my last 12 years and working with various hiring companies (from Japan to Canada), I tried to connect the dots and share my predictions for the job relocation market in 2025. These insights are mainly for the Tech industry. But, many of these trends will likely apply to other sectors, too. So, let’s break it down. 1. Competition will become more intense We’ll see a significant rise in applicants for each position. This increased competition will make it harder for job seekers to stand out and increase their workload for companies that hire talent from abroad. 2. Relocation-friendly job ads will decrease and become more segmented Not all markets will be equally open to hiring talent from abroad. Fewer jobs will explicitly support relocation. Opportunities will be concentrated in specific industries and regions. 3. Remote work will become a pathway to reloca...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Alternatives to WordPress for Personal Blogging

Ask HN: Alternatives to WordPress for Personal Blogging 2 by muddi900 | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello I have been using Wordpress as my blogging platform (https://chapra.blog). I also run a newsletter via kit. Not all my posts go out as a newsletter. My problem is my workflow. I compose in Notion, then copy and paste in wp. If it is a newsletter post, I also do that in Kit. This can be tedious. Which makes me write less. I also sometime cross post to Medium. I am looking for an alternative that: - Is a working CMS that can handle both web and a newsletter. - Can easily cross-post to Medium when wanted to. - Works with Markdown. - Is cheap to host. Ghost looked promising, but costs 5 times my current plan for WP. thanks

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Teams using AI – how do you prevent it from breaking your codebase?

Ask HN: Teams using AI – how do you prevent it from breaking your codebase? 20 by namanyayg | 21 comments on Hacker News. For teams actively using AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.), I'm noticing a frustrating pattern: the more complex your codebase, the more time developers spend preventing AI from breaking things. Some common scenarios I keep running into: * AI suggests code that completely ignores existing patterns * It recreates components we already have * It modifies core architecture without understanding implications * It forgets critical context from previous conversations * It needs constant reminders about our tech stack decisions For engineering teams using AI tools: 1. How often do you catch AI trying to make breaking changes? 2. How much time do you spend reviewing/correcting AI suggestions? 3. What workflows have you developed to prevent AI from going off track? Particularly interested in experiences from teams with mature codebases.

Ask HN: What is a common PR review time at your company? 7 by ericyd | 14 comments on Hacker News. I find myself frequently frustrated by waiting for PR reviews. There is tons of writing on the internet about short review times being better for productivity, and lots of tips-n-tricks for how to reduce PR review time. I've started to consider that my expectations are just wrong. I'm curious what other experiences are like. What is an average duration range for your PRs to get approved or changes requested? I'm totally fine with anecdotal responses.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Pull the curtain back on Nvidia's CES keynote please

Ask HN: Pull the curtain back on Nvidia's CES keynote please 13 by btbt | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've spent 15 years building a career in robotics/software engineering along the "traditional path": writing software to solve problems, mastering fundamentals, and architecting complex systems. I stay on top of cutting-edge technologies to stay relevant, but I’ve mostly seen AI/LLMs as powerful tools for augmenting specific tasks rather than fundamentally reshaping engineering as a discipline. However, NVIDIA’s recent CES keynote was another data point in a growing list challenging that view. While yes, primarily a sales pitch, the vision they presented suggests: - AI can solve any problem across modalities—just feed it data. - The future of engineering focuses on data gathering and AI integration, moving away from first-principles problem-solving. While the presentation was compelling, my consumer experience with AI/LLMs has been vastly different: - Great for sugg...

Ask HN: Any good mail scanning services you can reccomend? 3 by balderdash | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m about to embark on a somewhat nomadic next several months to a year, can anyone recommend options for me to have my mail sent (bank and credit card statements, insurance, etc)? I thought about having mail sent to friends or family, or renting a PO Box, the problem is I’m not sure how often I’ll be able to check the PO Box, and I’m not sure I want friends and family opening my mail, I’ve been thinking about subscribing to one of these mail scanning services, but was curious I’ve anyone had experience with them? I’m a little concerned about security and privacy, but not sure what my other options are. Very open to other options or alternatives, appreciate the input!

Ask HN: What Process/Applications Do You Use for Todo/Knowledge Management? 4 by conor_f | 1 comments on Hacker News. Like many of you, I have spent more time trying out different applications in the todo list/knowledge management space without finding a solution that has stuck. I've tried aggressive calendar scheduling, todo.txt, Vikunja, a paper planner, Logseq, Notion, and likely others along the way! I now have the suspicion that the issue I'm having isn't the tooling, but the process. The solution I've stuck with the longest has been Vikunja, but I felt limited by it as it is strictly a todo application, and doesn't support any form of knowledge management (by design, which makes sense!) So I'm wondering, what processes do people follow for their todo list management and knowledge management? What resources have you learned how to use your applications of choice? My requirements (in rough priority order): - Mobile + Desktop support (PWA, web UI, native a...

New ask Hacker News story: I'm a Programmer Who Bought a Typewriter

I'm a Programmer Who Bought a Typewriter 2 by sasha_fishter | 2 comments on Hacker News. I have been programming for the last 7 years professionally. I like computers from my early age. My father bought me Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ when I was in the first grade. Since then, computers were part of my life, significantly. I stare at my screen almost whole day. One day there was some voice in me saying "Buy a typewriter". I listened to the voice and bought Smith Corona Silent from 1946. It was the most profound experience I ever had with some kind of machine. I was not so happy when I got my first cell phone, and later smartphone nor computer. This is something different, probably because the basics are the same, I'm still typing. Suddenly I found myself writing a diary, and a novel. I never wrote anything other than blog posts (many of them since I had website similar to The Verge) - which I sold later. I now have 3 typewriters, 2x Smith Corona Silent (1946 and 1956), an...

New ask Hacker News story: Is it a good idea to start a company that competes with the one I currently work

Is it a good idea to start a company that competes with the one I currently work 2 by Sanket2001 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been working at a SaaS marketing startup for almost 3 years. The company is still under $300k ARR. I’ve been deeply involved in building the product and successfully selling it. I see significant growth potential and believe I can scale it much faster, but the founder doesn’t support my ideas. I joined when the team had 5 members, and now we’re at 25, yet I’m still an employee without ESOPs, and the founder seems unwilling to offer any. Should I consider leaving to start my own company in the same domain?

"Hacking" the source code of Paul Graham's homepage 3 by reconnecting | 0 comments on Hacker News. Today on HN, I started a discussion about handmade webpages, and one of the examples was Paul Graham's website (https://ift.tt/ZMPk9Q0). I decided to take a closer look and found several interesting artefacts. 0. Security. Instead of creating his own transparent 1x1 pixel gif for spacing (which is not the easiest task in 2025), Paul's website uses an IMG link from virtumundo.com (https://ift.tt/HeM3phV). So, if the owner of the virtumundo server receives a lot of requests, it's because of Paul Graham's homepage. It's also possible that Virtumundo might monitor the activity of Paul's visitors and their IP addresses through IMG requests log. 1. Declaration. The HTML version is not declared correctly, as the `` tag is related to HTML5, but the website uses a more or less HTML 4.01 version. 2. Comments. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How can I learn to better command people's attention when speaking?

Ask HN: How can I learn to better command people's attention when speaking? 14 by somethingsimple | 8 comments on Hacker News. I've noticed over the years that whenever I'm in group conversations in a social setting, people in general don't pay too much attention to what I say. For example, let's say the group is talking about travel and someone says something I find relatable e.g. someone mentions a place I've been to and really liked. When I try to contribute to the conversation, people just don't seem interested, and typically the conversation moves on as if I hadn't said anything. If I try to speak for a longer time (continuing with the travel example, let's say I try to talk about a particular attraction I enjoyed visiting at that location), I'm usually interrupted, and the focus shifts to whoever interrupted me. This has happened (and still happens often) a lot, in different social circles, with people of diverse backgrounds. So, I figur...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Who is accountable for cloud costs in your org?

Ask HN: Who is accountable for cloud costs in your org? 4 by devashish86 | 5 comments on Hacker News. Context: I lead the DevOps team in a mid size engineering org (60 engineers approximately). The product is a B2B SaaS product. The organization started taking cloud costs seriously early 2024 and my team worked throughout the year to make infrastructure changes to reduce our cloud costs. This included projects like removing manually created stale infrastructure, automating infra management, rightsizing, purchasing the right Savings Plans(and RIs), and many others. Now we're at a place where infra-only projects to optimize cloud costs are pretty much exhausted. On the other hand, most of the anomalies (and surprises) regarding cost spikes come from application level changes. This causes serious problems because not only these anomalies are identified late into the deployment lifecycle, but these anomalies are inherently harder to resolve quickly. An example of this is when a serv...

Ask HN: Did AI make you a worse programmer? 3 by alex5207 | 5 comments on Hacker News. After a year or so using co-pilot and its cousins, I coincidentally tried a new editor and never got around to install any AI support there. I realized that AI had sneaked in on me: It had made me unlearn syntax that used to be second nature. Simple things I knew how to do before, I suddenly had to look up. That made me wonder: Is the true cost of using AI, which, in its current form, I deem as "autocomplete on steroids", not the subscription you pay, but the decay of your skills? And if AI decays part of your skillset, to what extent do you think that part of your skillset even matters given the trajectory of AI for coding? Have any of your stopped using AI directly in your editor for similar reasons?

It's basically a framework/prototype that others can build upon. I was thinking MIT, but I want to avoid the following. MIT Base Game Exists. Developer A creates a derivative. Developer B creates a derivative. Developer B thinks A's game is a bit too similar and decides to sue. How can I license my project without this possibility. I think Apache says you can't sue the original authors without losing your own rights to lose the code. Another option is GPL, but I don't want to stop commercial usage or force other developers into contributing back.

Ask HN: How to give formal feedback to my manager? 2 by frenchtoast8 | 4 comments on Hacker News. It's everyone's favorite time of the year again. This year, the company I work for is implementing a long list of questions I have to answer about my manager. This is new to me, as my prior experience with performance reviews has been entirely downwards. I'm not sure how to approach this. Truthfully, I don't have any complaints for my manager. When I tell them I have a problem, they usually fix it, and they do a good job of preventing it from getting to me in the first place. I hate that HR is forcing people to come up with something negative even if they don't want to. Usually I try to be vague as RK suggests[1], but I don't think that's possible this time because they all ask for specific examples and are asking me to quantify the negative effects the manager had on the company. Ask HN: How Do Recruiters Still Have Jobs? 6 by b8 | 4 comments on Hacker News. Candidly, it doesn't make sense for recruiters to do "screen" calls to "go over" stuff that's already on my resume and re-confirm that I don't require a visa, despite indicating that I can work legally in the US (US Citizen) in my application on Lever or Workday. Recruiters screening calls etc. seem like a waste of time. I agree that recruiters help reduce noise, but as per Sturgeon's law 90% of applications for jobs are noise. AI can and already do (ATS systems) screen out unqualified candid ants. The application process would be more streamlined without recruiters. AI should and will replace recruiters in the future.

Tap Yes on a notification on my iPhone, which I don't receive because I am not logged in into any google accounts 2. Verify using prompt on the Gmail App on my phone (I can't use gmail on chrome on my laptop), which I can't use since I am trying to login into Gmail anyway 3. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Where can I find human-generated content now that I've quit Reddit?

Ask HN: Where can I find human-generated content now that I've quit Reddit? 3 by rizs12 | 4 comments on Hacker News. I am so used to appending 'reddit' to the end of every Google search that I am now at a loss as to where I can find human content that isn't SEO optimised (and bullshit). I've had enough of Reddit - partly because it's so full of spam and bots and general bullshit. I've blocked my browser from accessing Reddit, to ensure I kick the habit. I've tried using duckduckgo instead of google search but that hasn't made much of a difference.

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: Impassable Cloudflare challenges are ruining my browsing experience

Tell HN: Impassable Cloudflare challenges are ruining my browsing experience 42 by blakeashleyjr | 28 comments on Hacker News. I travel often. Sometimes I use a VPN, sometimes I don't. I use a heavily customized Firefox config on Linux. Cloudflare challenges have made large portions of the web unusable for me. Some recent examples - The "unsubscribe" button in Indeed's job notification emails leads me to an impassable Cloudflare challenge. The "Contact Us" page is also behind an impassable Cloudflare challenge. - While migrating a non-profit off of A2 Hosting, their login forces me to re-enter credentials after failing a challenge, looping endlessly. - On a particularly ironic note, I tried to complain on the Cloudflare Forums—met with another impassable challenge. When reachable, customer support always says "try a mobile data connection", "switch to Chrome", or some other variant of "too bad, so sad". Is anyone else dealing...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How does one become a Go developer?

Ask HN: How does one become a Go developer? 2 by SamInTheShell | 2 comments on Hacker News. I have a background in automating infrastructure, doing Linux Administration, DevOps, and more recently a Platform Engineering role. I've been doing programming in Go since roughly 2015, but haven't done anything public facing. How do I build up this background to move towards programming in Go? I've not really figured it out, these dev jobs seem pretty elusive and I've always talked too low level or too high level during interviews. Pretty sure I talked myself out of one Go dev job by talking about how strings work traditionally in C. lol Any perspective is appreciated.
