New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Am I a bad person if I give up on Docker Compose?

Ask HN: Am I a bad person if I give up on Docker Compose? 2 by travisgriggs | 0 comments on Hacker News. I used to just put my servers together with some systemd files and scripts. But I recently decided to finally follow the herd and do the docker thing. It has been so frustrating for me. I get the supposed plus (encpasulation, isolation, etc), but I just had a build that regressed for reasons I can not figure out (it's just an Elixir Phoenix app with a timescaledb). Out of the blue, my db init scripts aren't running all of a sudden (I did apt update the servers). I just find myself staring at so many layers of tools. We're a (very) small team and I just need tech that can be understood and managed and that I don't have to arguments with LLMs about how to diagnose/fix. Is this just a rough spot, and I need to be cheered on and I'll eventually "get it all"? Or would I be better just using my oldtimer knowledge skills to set the thing up?

New ask Hacker News story: Founder Ghosting After Investment – What Now?

Founder Ghosting After Investment – What Now? 3 by gehsuxye | 1 comments on Hacker News. I made a small investment in a YC startup and haven’t received any meaningful updates since. The founders have been inactive on LinkedIn and haven’t responded to multiple follow-ups. I’ve stayed supportive and founder-friendly, but the silence is worrying. Pivots happen—that’s fine—but radio silence is not. Any advice on how to move this forward?

New ask Hacker News story: Best Linux distro in 2025 for non-experts

Best Linux distro in 2025 for non-experts 10 by vvvnnnnvvv | 6 comments on Hacker News. This is about finding a good linux distro for my parents to use. Apparently, Windows now requires an outlook account in order to log into your computer. Well - his outlook account has been hacked. (In fact, it's the second time he's had a Microsoft account be hacked. He's pretty savvy about scams and phishing, but we can't figure how how this keeps happening.) Anyway, understandably, he's pretty freaked out about what they might have access to on his computer and will probably end up just reformatting it. He's open to switching to linux, but I've been out of the game for a while and not sure what to recommend. In olden times, Ubuntu was my go to - is that still a reasonable default or is there a new game in town? They primarily use the internet and I guess they might need to print sometimes (which I'm assuming is going to be a hassle no matter which distro we pick)...

Ask HN: How do duplicates get posted to HN? 2 by donnachangstein | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've noticed that duplicate links are sometimes permitted to be submitted and posted within a short window, e.g.: https://ift.tt/lrdWLf8 I thought duplicate URLs were rejected and the existing link simply upvoted? It appears to not be the case. How is this possible?
