New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Help find old article on learnings of a Software Engineer

Ask HN: Help find old article on learnings of a Software Engineer 2 by rhardih | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've been scouring the web for and old article that was posted on HN awhile back. My problem is I don't remember the title exactly. It was something to the effect of "What I've learned in 25 years as a software engineer", but the number could be different and it could also just be engineer. One thing I remember distinctly, is that it had a section about the importance of "how groups makes decisions" - but that is about as far as my memory of the contents goes. It looked like it was on someone's personal website, minimal styling and such. No major blogging platform. If this rings a bell for anyone, your help is much appreciated.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What's Hacker News's vision for the future?

Ask HN: What's Hacker News's vision for the future? 5 by gooob | 4 comments on Hacker News. It's the weekend. Let's do some brainstorming. What's forefront on your mind with regards to the human predicament, and how we move forward? We all see that it seems pretty much everyone has gone insane, or at least that's what the narrative portrays. Why are companies, governments, and other organizations doing such stupid things? So we've made machines that can appear to "think", by articulating linguistic constructs that make sense. In fact, there appears to be actual semantic and logical structure embedded within the neural networks of LLMs. Ok, let's keep our heads on straight, keep in mind the mathematics involved, chill out, and just think about what it is that we actually want (and what "we" are, for that matter). Are we going to someday transcend language? I'm aware that I'm typing this message out to you, using language, wi...

Building simple tool: upload your CV → get instant no-BS feedback 3 by sultanmustafin | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello everyone! I'm a fullstack developer, I've done dozens of interviews and reached out to hundreds of recruiters looking for a job. It’s a simple tool: upload your CV → get instant, no-BS feedback You can try it free (preview feedback). Would love your feedback (pun intended).

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is Kubernetes still a big no-no for early stages in 2025?

Ask HN: Is Kubernetes still a big no-no for early stages in 2025? 10 by herval | 15 comments on Hacker News. It's a commonly-repeated comment that early stage startups should avoid K8s at all cost. As someone who had to manage it on a baremetal infrastructure in the past, I get where that comes from - Kubernetes has been historically hard to setup, you'd need to spend a lot of time learning the concepts and how to write the YAML configs, etc. However, hosted K8s options have improved significantly in recent years (all cloud providers have Kubernetes options that are pretty much self-managed), and I feel like with LLMs, it's become extremely easy to read & write deployment configs. What's your thoughts about adopting K8s as infrastructure early on (say, when you have initial customer fit and a team of 5+ engineers) and standardizing around it? How early is too early? What pitfalls do you think still exist today?

Ask HN: Is context-switching the real productivity killer? 2 by kristel100 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I keep seeing debates about overwork and burnout, but in my team it’s the constant switching between projects/tools that drains everyone. We started limiting streams + using monday dev to cut down tool-hopping, and energy levels jumped. Has anyone else found a structure that cuts down the mental burden?

New ask Hacker News story: iCloud Mail or Gmail?

iCloud Mail or Gmail? 5 by bigbaldhead | 9 comments on Hacker News. I know, it sounds stupid, but I recently bought an iPhone and I use Windows as the main OS (Linux as the second). I'm going crazy deciding because I've had Gmail for 5 years with over 20,000 emails and iCloud Mail with just 30. I'd like to switch from Gmail to iCloud, but I'm afraid that if I lose the iPhone and switch to Android it won't be the same anymore. On the iPhone I also have ADP enabled, so this complicates both security and Apple account recovery. Personal use: I see everyone has iPhones but uses Gmail. Why? Gmail collects more data to profile you with advertising, Apple does not. I also have Tutanota and ProtonMail, but I would like to use iCloud Mail. I use iCloud for Drive and stuff, but for email I only use Gmail (Apple Mail for Apple stuff only). For social media I use Gmail. I've been stuck for months, I don't know what to do, especially if I lose or break my iPhone, my o...

Thank you!

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How are you teach your kids programming in 2025?

Ask HN: How are you teach your kids programming in 2025? 3 by chenxi9649 | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, my nephew is 11, and I'm planning on giving him my old laptop. However, I don't want him to JUST play games 24/7 but for him to do something productive like learning how to code. And I'll meet with him once per week to check up onhim. My dilemma is that AI has completely changed how I personally code(and learn things), and all of the existing courses/curriculums for kids just feel a bit archaic... Obviously, I can't just tell my nephew to go talk to chatgpt all day long and learn, without a project plan/target, he's gonna drift off(as I would too). I'm also thinking, since my main goal here is for him to just learn, maybe we should even just start with basic math/science instead of straight into coding? I don't have any kids myself, so I'm curious to learn how all of the parents on HN are educating their kids today! Anything is helpful :)

New ask Hacker News story: My First $500 MRR – My thoughts and learnings

My First $500 MRR – My thoughts and learnings 3 by adrianobbe | 1 comments on Hacker News. I will keep this as straight to the point and no BS as possible. This is the 6th Project I build, the first one to have meaningful revenue, however you could consider 500€MRR as little revenue, but for me it's great progress. I'm not here to say that this is a lot, just here to share my thoughts on how I got here and what I learned. I know I still have a lot to learn. 1st: FitMe - 30 Users, 0$, Failure (Built for 6 months, launched, 0 user feedback, was so tired and sick of it, extremely technically challenge. I built something that was "cool" not that I wanted) 2nd: Pickpocket Alert - 0$, Failure. 32,000 users. (Didn't know how to monetize.) 3rd: Nationality Guesser - 9€MRR, Failure. 22,000 users. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What's the best free AI coding assistant available?

Ask HN: What's the best free AI coding assistant available? 2 by supermanonipad | 1 comments on Hacker News. I’m not a programmer, but I understand how code works conceptually. I rely on AI coding assistants to help me build projects, but I’ve run into a common problem: most good ones are paid or have very limited free tiers. For example, I used Augment Code (1,000 free daily requests) and Kiro IDE (200 free daily requests), but both eventually moved behind paywalls. I’m hoping to find recommendations for new or still-free AI coding assistants that I can use without hitting strict limits. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Does Microsoft gain anything from the constant annoying rebranding?

Ask HN: Does Microsoft gain anything from the constant annoying rebranding? 4 by lr0 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I know no company or business in history that had the amount of rebranding that Microsoft did, initially I thought that the product manager there might have had an identity crisis, and he/she will be leave the position at some point and this it will be over. But this practice does not seem to end ever, which made me wonder if it is a company policy and it actually helps the business growth. Does any one of you know any possible business use to such intensive rebranding? Some of you might have not dealt with many Microsoft products so you might have not experienced examples of what I am talking about, so to name a few: * Azure Active Directory → Microsoft Entra ID (maybe the most horrible one of them) * Microsoft Threat Protection → Microsoft 365 Defender * Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection → Microsoft Defender for Endpoint * Office 365 Advanced Threat Protect...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Tell me about the best programmer you worked with

Ask HN: Tell me about the best programmer you worked with 7 by jvanderbot | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'll start. A colleague would be politely suggesting designs or changes, but rolling with the punches when people disagreed. They were always proven right eventually, and it was usually because someone wandered into a module they had written and loved it. They changed a lot about how I worked, and by far their main characteristics were patience with us and a sort of completeness to whatever they wrote. It just arrived, maybe with one small adjustment or bugfix, bug never with a rearchitecture or major refactor required.

New ask Hacker News story: Design History in India

Design History in India 2 by vbhv_v | 0 comments on Hacker News. Written from the city of Ahmedabad. This text was an outcome of some conversations with designers and educators I met in Ahmedabad in 2024. --- Design History in India is a bit like a forgotten library book—interesting, potentially valuable, but inexplicably missing from the shelf when you really need it. Despite a rich post-independence history where tradition and modernity mingled in strange and wonderful ways, hardly anyone thought to write any of it down. I suspect it’s because designers, by nature, are far too busy designing things to stop and write about them. Last week I stumbled upon one of the strangest and most delightful stories of forgotten tech and design history: the Apple Newton in India. Yes, the Newton—the 1980s precursor to the iPhone and iPad that promised the future but tripped and fell into the past instead. Someone I met in Ahmedabad, who’d been on the front lines of this saga, told me about how A...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How is Cognition able to raise at $10B?

Ask HN: How is Cognition able to raise at $10B? 3 by thereitgoes456 | 4 comments on Hacker News. I'm looking for real answers and to understand the thought process particularly of investors. Please try not to answer with "VCs are idiots", unless you absolutely must. Cognition AI, the makers of "Devin" and recent acquirers of Windsurf, raised recently at a $10B valuation [1]. This is about the same valuation as Cursor, which is the fastest growing AI consumer app in the world, with $500MM ARR, beloved by many programmers. Meanwhile Devin launched with an immediate scandal and continues to have poor reputation. It is not used by anyone I know, seems to be targeted at enterprise, and has announced a single-digit number of deals with companies. Something makes me think they probably do not have $500MM ARR or anywhere close. They have no background in ML, hiring only contest programmers. So how are they raising at much higher valuations than any other company in t...

New ask Hacker News story: Individual Bestbuy email subscription pages are apparently indexed by Google

Individual Bestbuy email subscription pages are apparently indexed by Google 3 by appel | 0 comments on Hacker News. I stumbled upon this today because I googled a certain phrase and the first two results lead me to a personalized email (un)subscribe form with individual e-mail addresses at the top. I thought that that was not great, so I submitted it to hackerone as per BB's responsible dislosure policy, but they closed the report and changed the status to "Informative". > Thank you for your submission! Although your finding might appear to be a security vulnerability, this behavior does not really pose a concrete and exploitable risk to the platform. Bestbuy only view this as an issue if the links are obtainable from Bestbuy systems directly which doesn't appear to be the case here. Ask HN: Why aren't more developers using AI tools? 3 by dawie | 0 comments on Hacker News. I’ve worked in both corporate and startup settings and keep noticing that many talented developers I meet don’t use AI tools at all — not even for small things like boilerplate code, tests, or docs. Why? Concerns about security or IP? Don’t trust the quality? Slows you down instead of helping? Just don’t see the value? If you don’t use AI tools (or tried and stopped), I’d love to hear your reasons. If you do use them, what convinced you?

New ask Hacker News story: Stripe suspended our account without clear reason – need advice

Stripe suspended our account without clear reason – need advice 3 by markdoppler | 6 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, My co-founder and I have been building ArtificialStudio.ai since 2023, a SaaS platform similar to RunwayML and Krea.ai that allows marketers and agencies to easily use AI models for image and video generation. Two days ago, our Stripe account was suspended without prior warning. We believe this might be due to 1 chargeback we received last month — not because of fraud, but because some users accidentally purchased an annual subscription instead of a monthly one. We refunded all of them and updated our checkout UX so the monthly plan is now the default option. We comply with all of Stripe’s policies, and similar platforms in our industry (RunwayML, Krea.ai) operate on Stripe without issues. We’ve contacted Stripe through email and the dashboard, but so far have only received automated responses. This is a critical moment for us, as our MRR has been growing fast and thi...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Would you get a CS degree today?

Ask HN: Would you get a CS degree today? 10 by reilly3000 | 7 comments on Hacker News. I’m looking for feedback from the community. My son made a plan to get a 4 year degree from a decent state university in computer science but is having second thoughts. He is looking at ~$130K in costs and 4 years of not working vs trying to find work and build a resume organically. He’s a fine young developer who loves C++ and learned Java, web dev, and EDA in his teen years for fun. His written several languages and toy compilers, ordered PCBs for his own gaming device, and built a social network in the 6th grade. He’s looking forward to higher level coursework but dreading the intro classes. His motivation for getting a degree was to be marketable to employers, but also to gain a better understanding of fundamentals. With AI making entry level programming jobs scarce, does it really make sense to invest the time and money? If not, what sort of pathway into a programming career would be a good a...

Ask HN: How can ChatGPT serve 700M users when I can't run one GPT-4 locally? 47 by superasn | 30 comments on Hacker News. Sam said yesterday that chatgpt handles ~700M weekly users. Meanwhile, I can't even run a single GPT-4-class model locally without insane VRAM or painfully slow speeds. Sure, they have huge GPU clusters, but there must be more going on - model optimizations, sharding, custom hardware, clever load balancing, etc. What engineering tricks make this possible at such massive scale while keeping latency low? Curious to hear insights from people who've built large-scale ML systems.

Privacy, Code, and the Future 5 by rasengan | 0 comments on Hacker News. Sharing my message to the CypherPunk's mailing list today, as I feel it's pertinent for everyone to be aware of the crossroads we've reached: Roman Storm, one of the developers of Tornado Cash, a smart contract on Ethereum designed to enable transactional privacy, has been found guilty of conspiring to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business [1]. Tornado Cash is simply code. It runs on the Ethereum Virtual Machine, autonomously. Yet, in 2022, the U.S. government designated it as a sanctioned entity, making it illegal for U.S. persons to interact with it in any capacity, including simply receiving coins therefrom [2]. This case, and its verdict, makes writing open source code that enables privacy a crime. It makes receiving a transaction from autonomous code a crime. Technology is becoming more powerful, more decentralized, and more foundational to society. With that power comes tension bet...

New ask Hacker News story: What do you dislike about ChatGPT and what desperately needs improving?

What do you dislike about ChatGPT and what desperately needs improving? 4 by zyruh | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm curious to hear feedback from the HN community about your biggest pain points or frustrations with ChatGPT (or similar LLMs). What aspects of the experience do you find lacking, confusing, or outright irritating? Which improvements do you think are most urgent or would make the biggest difference?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Modular's Max Momentum

Ask HN: Modular's Max Momentum 2 by dcreater | 0 comments on Hacker News. Modular's MAX platform looks very promising but it seems to have lost momentum? I dont hear anyone in the community using it? Model support seems to be very behind, in terms of AI model release pace.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Setup for Local LLM Backups?

Ask HN: Setup for Local LLM Backups? 3 by andy99 | 1 comments on Hacker News. As a backup in case future access changes, I'd like to have sota LLM weights and a machine that can run queries with them in reserve. OpenAI releasing weights is as good a time as any to actually do it. My question is what hardware setup would you buy, that is reasonable accessible (say under 5k, ideally well under) and can do a good job running the models for local queries. And, if it matters, could be suitable for archiving, say until either there is a substantial advance rendering today's LLMs obsolete or until needed because good, open weights aren't available anymore.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is AI so environmentally damaging that we shouldn't use it?

Ask HN: Is AI so environmentally damaging that we shouldn't use it? 2 by rrosen326 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I keep getting told by friends not to use AI because it is destroying the environment. I've argued about it, but maybe I'm wrong? I'm sure there are good insights within HN. How should we think about this issue?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Why was Windows ME so bad?

Ask HN: Why was Windows ME so bad? 4 by alganet | 4 comments on Hacker News. Just a little bit of nostalgia! I remember the constant kernel crashes and the fact that it was a poorly rebranded Windows 98, but does anyone remember other reasons why ME was so innefective?

New ask Hacker News story: Time to upgrade my laptop – need advice please

Time to upgrade my laptop – need advice please 6 by zyruh | 12 comments on Hacker News. Looking for a high-performance PC (non-Mac) for data-heavy workloads — suggestions? It's time to upgrade. I'm looking for a Windows/Linux-compatible machine (no Mac) that can handle: Large spreadsheet workloads (think multi-GB Excel/CSV files) 4K+ video editing and exports Possibly some ML experimentation later on I was considering a high-end gaming PC for the GPU + RAM benefits, but not sure if that’s the best tradeoff for thermals, noise, and form factor. Open to desktop or laptop, though portability is a plus. What builds or machines would you recommend in 2025 for blazing speed + stability?

New ask Hacker News story: Tell HN: I'm tired of formulaic, "LLM house style" show HN submissions

Tell HN: I'm tired of formulaic, "LLM house style" show HN submissions 22 by zahlman | 0 comments on Hacker News. You know the ones. They typically read just like: > Hi HN, I have a history with some sort of problem — the common one which I'll describe here with some flowery prose that possibly makes gratuitous use of "quotation marks". I realized I was going some thing that reflects my fundamental limitations as a human. This demonstrates that something is wrong with our modern world, although the proliferation of AI slop is definitely not that thing. > [Now something like:] > To fight back, I built Software Name. It’s not just another program of the sort you might logically expect. It's something else, designed to implement a puffed-up description of solving the problem. > [or perhaps:] > I built hxxps://heck.no, an arbitrarily-described tool that helps you deal with the problem, instantly. You can interact with it in an intuitive way...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: What crypto payments options should I offer for my VPN?

Ask HN: What crypto payments options should I offer for my VPN? 2 by willprice89 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I run a VPN service designed to get around censorship. Customers are mainly people in countries like China, Iran, and Russia. Unfortunately those countries don't have easy access to common Western payment methods (credit cards, PayPal etc.) I thought adding a cryptocurrency payment option could give more people access, but I don't have any real experience in the area and the information I've found searching online seems extremely unreliable. So I'm hoping I can get some better answers from Hacker News. Here are my questions: 1. Is crypto a good choice for this use case? Are there other options that would achieve my goal (allow people who can't use Western payment methods to pay)? 2. Could I start with one or just a few specific cryptocurrencies? Or do I need to support a whole bunch of different coins? 3. Any recommendations for self-hosted tools or third...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Want to leave my job with nothing lined up

Ask HN: Want to leave my job with nothing lined up 9 by bsjak | 5 comments on Hacker News. I’m currently working in a very toxic environment and it’s starting to affect my life outside of work in negative ways. I have money saved up, don’t live an extravagant lifestyle, and have around 7 years of experience but I do know how challenging the job market has been which worries me. I would also be leaving my current company towards the end of the year when not many people are hiring. When asking my friends and colleagues what to do, I always get the same answer of either wait until you find something else to quit or wait until they fire you, but whatever you do don’t leave with no offer in hand. I agree with their approach in general but I’m just really burned out and don’t have the mental energy to come home from a 10 hour day and start preparing for interviews. Ideally I would like time to prepare adequately for interviews and really think about what I want to do next instead of just ...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is fast.ai's "Deep Learning for Coders" still relevant in 2025?

Ask HN: Is fast.ai's "Deep Learning for Coders" still relevant in 2025? 4 by hedgehog0 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Dear all, I learned some basic ML from Andrew Ng's Coursera course more than 10 years ago, recently I graduated from the Math Master program and have some free time in my hand, so I am thinking about picking up ML/DL again. In [Yacine's video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph6PIchDOcQ), he mentioned [fast.ai's course](https://course.fast.ai/), which I heard of in the past but didn't look into too much. The table of contents of [the book](https://ift.tt/Myczw7B) looks pretty solid, but it was published in 2020, so I was wondering given the pace of AI development, do you think this book or course series is still a good choice and relevant for today's learners? *To provide more context about me*: I did math major and CS minor (with Python background) during undergrad but have never taken any ML/DL courses (other than that Coursera one),...

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How do you avoid job hunting burnout?

Ask HN: How do you avoid job hunting burnout? 3 by b8 | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've been applying for hundreds of jobs for the past few months without any offers. I did 7 interviews for one company to end up with a rejection. A few virtual loop interviews just to be ghosted. Most applications I don't even get a resume screen rejection email. This seriously sucks and has made my depression as well as anxiety go up. How do y'all deal with job hunting burnout?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Best AI Automation Platform

Ask HN: Best AI Automation Platform 2 by franze | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm holding AI First Workshops for Small to Mid-Sizes Companies. For lots of them the real value of AI comes with automation. Mostly Email -> AI -> Action Thing is Make, Zapier, n8n - whenever I use them we waste more money on clicking around and what goes where then focusing on the overall business logic. The automation part of the workshop is about 2 to 3h. So what solutions out there for trigger based automation that os truly AI first (so an internal AI oder chatgpt can really create the workflow) and users can go from idea to running AI workflow in ~2h? Or is this a product that does not exist yet?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Anyone know how to reach Cloudflare support?

Ask HN: Anyone know how to reach Cloudflare support? 5 by OhMeadhbh | 4 comments on Hacker News. So I have a paid account w/ CloudFlare, but I can't seem to reach their support people. I've also noticed that half the Internet is blocked from my IP. Not sure why. Work uses BT to distribute customized Debian images, though as far as I can tell none of these images have copyrighted material in them. Maybe my ISP is telling CloudFlare I'm a bad person me 'cause it sees BT and doesn't care that it can't find evidence of copyright infringement? So about half the time, the CloudFlare dashboard is blocked with a message saying I should email the site I'm trying to reach and get them to unblock me. But it's CloudFlare I'm trying to reach and their support people don't respond (even if I try to email them.) I mean... I guess it's time to move to Akamai. But CloudFlare's still poisoned my IP. Also... seems like if a CDN is going to block access t...
